New! Smiling God Poster
Check out our new poster by Dave Watt here.
Director’s Notes:
One of the Truths about aging is you will start to resent the Youth. I’ve always known this. My parents and aunts/uncles used to make commentary about my generation when I was a teenager. But when I spent time around my grandparents, they were still hanging on to bullshit about my parents’ generation. The pattern was pretty easy to recognize, even as a kid.“But this generation is different!...

Thoughts on Unlicensed Season 2
Hey, Joseph Fink here.Years ago, I had the thought that it would be fun to write a Night Vale episode with Molly Quinn and Lusia Strus, because I thought they both had great voices that would be very interesting contrasted against each other. Then we cast TL Thompson as Lee Marvin, and their voice got added into the mix in my head. I wanted to hear these three voices together. Gradually I decided ...

Directors Notes: 253 - Instructions for Folding
Earlier this year, Jeffrey, Brie and I sat down for a writers meeting to discuss some general plans for the first part of the Night Vale year. We don’t like to lock ourselves into a plot just yet, instead we like to come up with some general concepts that we want to look at for the year, and then see where we’re at after we’ve written a few episodes. This more organic approach to story build...

The Danger of the Long Read (or, The Worst Paragraph Ever Written)
I'm finally doing it, y'all. I'm reading Moby Dick, by Herman Melville. The whole fucking thing. My copy is a little over 600 pages with some pretty small type. I'm halfway through it, and I have to say: Not Bad. Well, like, incredible, but as a reading experience, it's got its ups and downs. First off, it's super readable. Short chapters, minus the 40-something-page digres...
Director's Notes: 252 - Paid Programming
I've been wanting to write a whole episode for DEB for a long time. A couple years ago, I thought I would make it so that she's Cecil's replacement host (like Joan Rivers for Johnny Carson back in the 80s). But I never got around to writing that, which is probably good, because I don't know that it makes sense for Deb to be on a track to become a talk-show host. Deb is the master o...

The model for the Night Vale library
In the first Welcome to Night Vale novel, we have an adventure in the Night Vale library that, for the first time, describes that library's interior. When writing the rough draft of that chapter, I drew on what is still the archetypical library in my head, which is the library I grew up with. The Camarillo public library, about an hour outside of Los Angeles. There is now a new Camarillo libra...

Director's Notes - Episode 251: "Detours"
My housemate Nathan and I were in San Francisco this past spring—the city where we both used to live when we met in film school in the early 2000s. We try to go back every year to visit old friends and hang out in our old neighborhood. For a city that’s changed in so many ways since those days, our old neighborhood, the Richmond District, has stayed pretty much the same. It’s comforting to b...

Understanding the assignment
My mother's moving houses soon, and she's been cleaning out the attic, which means she's been shipping me boxes of old stuff from when I was a kid. Yearbooks, comics, football cards, photos, etc. You know the drill. It's really fun looking through all of these old things, but kind of a burden to have to make the decision myself on what to keep. I live in a NYC apartment, so space i...

"What's your shining light?"
There's a lot of good that came out of the 2015 podcast The Worst Idea of All Time- in which two New Zealand friends decide to watch Grown-Ups 2once a week for a whole year, while recording a podcast review of the film after each viewing. It's of course, a funny concept and a hilarious show. And it led to one of the greatest Thanksgiving traditions of all time: Till Death Do Us Blart. But ...
