New MMH Schedule for the Fall Semester
Hey Friends! I’m back in school (this was my first week back which, if you've been to college, you know what a stupid hullaballoo the first week of school is), which means a new schedule is in order!Tuesday: McMansion of the WeekSaturday or Sunday (depending on the week): Looking Around/other special series.Next week there will be two house posts, one on Monday (to make up for this week’s)...
Guest Article: How to Date a Rowhouse (Other Than Swiping Right) by Jackson Gilman-Forlini
Jackson continues to do an excellent job with his essays on rowhouses for the Looking Around series. I found this one particularly useful as someone who lives in a city of rowhouses (I currently am writing this in an apartment in an early 20th century rowhouse!)
Good House of the Week: Clark County, Nevada
Hello friends! I just realized I didn't post a good house of the week for this week's McMansion. Sorry for the late post. This is a first for GHOTW in that this house hasn't even been built yet! I'll be honest, it took a lot of work to find a half-way decent house in a place like Las Vegas, where speculation was so heavy before the recession that garbage went up at a rate of what se...

Good House of the Week: Douglas County, Nebraska
Folks, it's extremely rare to see a well done imitation of the Prairie style, especially done by a builder, but even I have to admit this 1994 house is stunning. The interiors are immaculately dressed with Frank Lloyd Wright furnishings, and as a bonus, the house is actually located in the Prairie! The materials of this house are extremely high-quality, and it gets the prairie look pretty much ...

Good House of the Week: Montana
This week's house is actually in the adjacent county (but not too far from this week's McMansion). It demonstrates that a good house can be a reasonable, everyday house - including an attached garage. While I may not be particularly enthusiastic about the garage door choice, I do believe the garage is well-integrated into this 2017 house. First off, there is great horizontal rhythm connecti...
New $10 Patron Reward: Houses from Hell
Hello Patrons! Today I'm introducing a new $10 reward to replace the stickers. Not only were the stickers difficult to manage, but more importantly the local print shop where I've been getting them made has closed, making the stickers more difficult and expensive to produce. The remaining stickers will be sent out by the end of August. Thus, time for a change.I was inspired by a real estate...

Good House of the Week: St Charles County, Missouri
I'm going to be up front with you: there are two things I don't like about this house. One is, of course, the shutters. The other is the brick veneer which I find unnecessary as it clashes with rather than compliments those amazing wood shingles. Limiting the house to (what I assume is) fibre cement siding and wood shingles would make the exterior seem much less busy. The main lesson to lea...
Good House of the Week: Mississippi
Hello Friends! I'd already chosen this 2015 house as the Good House of the Week when I was searching for McMansions in a different county. This is such a lovely example of doing historical styles right, that I had to use it even if it's not in the same county as this week's McMansion. The style of this house is what is commonly called the Plantation style - featuring double colonnaded p...
