A few of you may wonder why I didn't do a post yesterday BUT I had to focus on other matters. TODAY though I will couple some sexy black history facts to go hand & hand beautifully like Langston Hughes & The Harlem Renaissance ๐ฅฐ Speaking of hand & hand ... *** ๐คฏ๐คฏ Did You Know?! ๐คฏ๐คฏ *** James Mercer Langston Hughes was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist from Joplin, Missouri. One of the earliest innovators of the then-new literary art form called jazz poetry, Hughes is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was the development of the Harlem neighborhood in New York City as a Black cultural mecca in the early 20th Century and the subsequent social and artistic explosion that resulted. Lasting roughly from the 1910s through the mid-1930s, the period is considered a golden age in African American culture, manifesting in literature, music, stage performance and art. Also known as the "New Negro Movement," many people would argue that the Harlem Renaissance never ended and has continued to be an important cultural force in the United States through the decades: from the age of stride piano jazz and blues to the ages of bebop, rock and roll, soul, disco and hip-hop. 3 lessons to take from Langston Hughes: Lesson #1: He defies the status quo Lesson #2: His writing style had an intent Lesson #3: He was dedicated to his craft Hughes taught writers how preserving through the odds and dedication to their craft is a commitment to success. You have to be proactive, reach out for new opportunities, and get outside your comfort zone. Itโs a journey, but one that would be worth it. Are you a fan of Langston Hughes?! Know any of his poetry? Do you like poetry? Did you know about the Harlem Renaissance? Do you know any songs from the Harlem Renaissance?
