“As the ancient legend says, the Greek goddess Pandora received a mysterious box as a gift from the gods, who envied her beauty, and she was ordered never to open it. One day, curiosity overpowered, and, unable to resist the temptation, she opened the lid to look inside, and released into the world a lot of all sorts of misfortunes: illness, anxiety, madness. But a certain merciful god allowed her to close the box at the last moment and not let slip away one saving remedy that makes life's hardships and suffering bearable. That tool was hope.
Hope, according to scientists, helps a person in trouble much better than all the words of comfort. It plays a surprisingly important role in people's lives, giving them an advantage in areas as diverse as school success and the ability to cope with burdensome responsibilities. Hope in a special sense represents more than just an optimistic view of things, when everything is imagined in the best possible light. Snyder defines hope more specifically as "belief that you have the desire and ability to achieve your goals, whatever they may be."
