“This top is a little tight around the arms.”
Ann Marie Higgins was psyching herself up for her catwalk, she was at Mommy Maternity’s latest fashion show, showing off the latest in maternity fashion. Previous models had completed their walk, all in different stages of pregnancy, leaving Ann Marie last at a very heavy nine months. She was far heavier than an average pregnant woman at nine months, she had spent it all indulging every whim her appetite gave her. Being pregnant was the ultimate excuse for any woman to let herself go, but for the other models Ann Marie was perhaps a warning, like the ending to an aesop fable about overindulgence.
“Don’t worry about it, you’ve done this a million times, just go out there and blow them all away!”
Her husband Michael Higgins encouraged her, dispelling whatever had been nagging her in her mind. Michael was also her agent, which gave him double incentive. Was it a conflict of interest to be married to a client? Absolutely, but that was just the way things worked out, starting off as a model and agent and turning into a married couple, now with a baby boy just around the corner. When she learned she was pregnant Ann Marie was distraught, thinking that her modeling career was over, but Michael made the save, he simply transitioned her to maternity modeling, getting her gigs from all the major maternity clothing labels.
It was just about Ann Marie’s time to go out and Michael gave her one last pep talk, “You are absolutely gorgeous and you are going to shine brighter than any of these mommas. Go out there and show them who's boss. You own this place.”
With those final words Ann Marie walked out onto the stage. She beamed a confident smile as she walked, cameras going off. She got at the end of the catwalk and stopped to pose, pushing out her stomach as far as she could. Her makeup was well put together, it complimented her natural pregnancy glow and made her shine like never before. She loved the attention she got from modeling being a preggo model gave her far more attention than when she was just an ordinary model.
Everyone is just naturally nicer to pregnant women. She had worried that she had gotten a bit fat during this pregnancy, but with all the oohs and ahs and flashing lights she knew she still had ‘it’.
You can’t teach ‘it’, you can’t coach ‘it’, you have to have ‘it’, and Ann Marie had the it factor. A combination of having Black Irish and Italian heritage had given her a dark mediterranean complexion that made her look exotic, a natural beauty.
Ann Marie flashed a white smile, turning to go back she made it halfway up the stage when she suddenly bent over in pain. The loud music that had been playing suddenly stopped as she dropped to her knees, Michael rushing out from behind the curtain to his wife.
“Annie, what's-”
“MMmMMooooh! The baby’s coming!”
That night at the fashion show was a night Michael and Annie would never forget, because it heralded the arrival of their baby Caleb. Annie’s contractions became a viral hit, someone had been filming the show and uploaded the whole ordeal to Youtube.
At first it caused Annie embarrassment, but over time she found the humor in it and joked about it casually.
After all, she was too caught up with being a mother.
It was tiring work and she didn’t get much sleep, but it was all worth it, she loved her baby with every fiber of her being. Annie even lost a little bit of weight during the months taking care of Caleb, her pregnancy cravings that had made her a gluttonous pig faded away, allowing her to eat normally.
After Caleb’s first birthday Ann Marie confronted her husband about getting back into modeling.
“Well…” Michael scratched the back of his head, “I suppose I could get you some plus size modeling gigs.” Ann Marie narrowed her eyes, “Hey! I'm not that fat anymore! Milking solved that!” Michael sighed, “Yeah, but you're still not in the standard industry size. I doubt you can squeeze into your old 4s.”
Ann Marie continued to glare at him, but she knew he was speaking more as her agent than anything else.
Michael continued, “Look, I'm sorry it is what it is. The best thing we can do is whip you into shape. You're 193, we need to get you down to at least 110. I can see about hiring some personal trainers and dietitians. It'll be hard work, but we can make you thin again for sure.”
Hard work. The very word sent chills up Annie’s spine.
When she was just a normal model it was all hard work. Dieting, exercise, dealing with pushy photographers, pervy fans, catty reviewers. But when she became pregnant everyone become so much nicer to her, more forgiving and the maternity modeling industry was much more kinder and gentler.
All the things she disliked about modeling bent over for her and did everything she wanted. They accommodated her and frankly she had become spoiled. Once she had her taste she didn’t want to stop.
“Can’t we go back to maternity modeling?”
“What...are you talking about?”
“We could have another baby and then we can go back to maternity modeling."
Michael looked at her with a raised eyebrow. “B-but we just had one...Caleb just turned one, he’s not even two yet...are you sure? I mean, I can easily provide, I have other clients, it’s just, are you ready, physically?”
Annie didn’t even need to decide it. She had no intention of going back to vanilla modeling. “Honey, I am positive. I told you when we got married that I wanted a large family. We’re devoted Catholics, it’s God’s way.”
She played her faith, it was dishonest, but there was truth to it. They had both been raised Catholic and went through the schools and such. Why not let the dogma of pro-life work in their favor?
Michael thought about it hard. He indeed made a promise to his wife that he would give her a large family. Now’s a good time to start as any. “Get in bed then, we have a long night ahead of us.”
The sex was the easiest part. Annie and Michael did it anywhere and at any time they could. They were honestly running out of places they didn’t do it. The laundry room had been done twice.
Sure enough the results were positive and Annie was pregnant once again, all the things she had experienced came right back. The morning sickness was just the worst. As she was kneeled over the proclin bowl she would blow chunks into it, filling it up with vomit.
But during the brief moments in between vomit sessions, where she rested her head on the seat, she reflected on what was to come: Food, being lazy, people allowing her to half ass things.
It was all going to be on easy street.
Michael entered the bathroom, adjusting his tie on his suit, “Well, I’m all ready.” Annie slowly turned her face to him, “Isn’t it a bit early?” Michael nods, “Yeah, but I wanted to at least wait for the sickness to pass. What would we do if you threw up during Caleb’s baptism?”
This Sunday was Caleb’s baptism, a proud event for the Catholic family.
Annie smiled weakly, “I think I’m done. Let me just brush my teeth and I’ll put on my dress.”
“Alright, I’ll go get Caleb ready, just yell if you need anything.”
Michael left the bathroom and Annie gingerly got up, reaching for her toothbrush. While she brushed her teeth she went over to her closet, looking through her dress collection. She brushed past her standard dresses, looking down at her deflated pot belly, that had yet to sprout with child, it was clear she wasn’t going to be fitting into them anytime soon.
“No shame in picking out a maternity dress, I am pregnant after all.” But picking the appropriate one was proving difficult. A lot of them were more open and casual and some were even a little slutty.
Nothing at all what should be worn at a church. But the bigger the dresses got the more conservative in stye they became. Annie bit her lip as she neared her biggest dress, there was enough cloth for two people! To ease herself she picked the third to last.
Slipping it on she remarked how loose it was. “But I guess I’ll grow into it again,” She thought to herself, putting her hand to where her belly would be bulging.
