From Selene to Io and back.
That’s all it was. From Selene to Io and back; launch from the second most populous lunar city, do a microskip - more like a hop, really - to io, scan the moon for lithium and then come back. Low cost to Earth’s Reparation Resource Budget, and might even scout out a couple good new places for some orbital mining.

“And you are certain that these capacitors were charging just fine before we launched?” Sarah grumbled, floating against the ceiling of the engine compartment as she wirelessly tested the capacitor bank built into the ship.
“[I am very certain, Sarah, because I have been piloting scout craft for over 200 of your years!]” snapped back Ksset’esth, her tail coiled around the guardrail of the deck, using it as leverage to orient her body in the now zero-g environment. She was currently putting most terrestrial strippers to shame, coiled back-around under herself to get to a panel below the walkway. “[Obviously the problem is Human manufacturing techniques-]”
“Which we learned from you, thankyouverymuch.” Sarah retorted, the electrical impediment detector giving out a mournful beep in her hands. “And the capacitors are working but empty - Just like the last two times you asked me to check.”
“[Then the charging station at the dock must be faulty-]”
“Or maybe you just weren’t paying attention!”
Serpentine eyes glared at her through the deck grating, unblinking. “[I was paying attention. It was your fault for being distracting!]”
“Dist-distracting? Distracting how? I was doing the same damn pre-flight check we’ve done a hundred times before-”
Ksset’esth didn’t respond and instead turned back to her work in silence. With a groan of frustration Sarah kicked off of the ceiling, flipping over to land feet-first on the wall closer to her partner.
“Look, I’m sorry about getting scared and throwing my instant noodles at you when we switched to aux power.”
There was a pause as what sounded like a panel being pried open, and then the whine of an electrical screwdriver.
“…and I’m sorry about rushing to the escape capsule - but come on! It was scary!”
“[Mmm.]”
“……and I’m sorry about locking it shut behind me and promising to tell your family that you died in glory. There, are we good now?”
“[Better. I accept your apology, Sarah.]” Ksset’esth said, sliding out from under the decking to look properly at her copilot. “[And I apologize for blaming you for the ship’s malfunction. You weren’t in charge of the capacitor banks, I was.]”
“Hah! Nice pun.”
“[I err…uh. Huh.]”
“Oh, it didn’t…? Well that’s an interesting quirk of the translator, then. But ah, so. What got you so distracted when we were fueling?”
“[Mmm - we don’t have to do this now, do we?]”
“I mean, we’re kinda baring our souls here, right? Confession is good for you and all that?”
Ksset’esth smirked and coiled around the guardrail a couple more times, keeping her face level with Sarah’s - almost as if she was searching for something. A few moments passed before Ksset’esth looked away, clearing her throat.
“[You were wiggling.]”
Sarah blinked before turning bright red. “Y-you were watching my ass?!”
“[It’s not my fault!]” Ksset’esth said, huffing. “[It’s round and soft-]”
“That’s muscle-”
“[-and you were wiggling it at me-]”
“I was …ok, admittedly, dancing to music but still-”
There was a pause as they looked at each other for a few moments - really, truly looked at each other, then they both turned away.
“[I…was just curious.]”
“Mmm.”
“[I mean no disrespect-]”
“Ah- it’s not that, I mean… I’ve thought about it too. Hard not to, when we’re stuck together, alone, regularly for days at a time…”
There was another long pause, but this time it wasn’t so awkward.
“Aahah… ah, s-so, what’s the verdict?”
Ksset’esth purred to herself, a rumbling sound that ebbed and flowed like the sea. “[We don’t have enough fuel on board to keep atmosphere, gravity, heat, commissary AND scanning going.]”
“W-well” Sarah said, laying down on the wall, “can we just stop scanning? Incomplete data’s still got to be worth something, right?”
Ksset’esth rumbled again - a deeper one, and gave her species version of a shake of the head. “[No. That’s what I was checking - once our orbital trajectory is locked in and the scan starts, we can’t abort it. The AI’s currently extrapolating data on the composition of this moon; if we don’t make enough orbits and collect enough data, then all future calculations will be wrong - or just need to be re-done.]”
“In which case, our trip out here is just a resource drain and a wash.”
“[Yep. So if we keep the scanner going, then we have to worry about killing two other subsystems for the next couple of days. That should ration our fuel enough to skip back to Selene at best, or at worst we’re near the earth-mars-venus corridor and can be picked up easily.]”
“So. Our options are (1) do nothing, get the scanning done but run out of fuel and broadcast our emergency beacon, forcing a rescue-”
“[Which is more resources drained.]”
“Right, and that cuts out of our pay - (2) Cut the scanner and just go home-”
“[Which is a waste of resources, and we’d have to come out here again anyway.]”
“-Or (3) We git gud and tough it out. Go home, no one’s the wiser - we’re just a little off-course.”
“[Yes. That’s correct.]”
“Well alright, that doesn’t even really seem like much of a choice at all. So we need to cut two?”
Ksset’esth ‘nodded’ again, and they both looked at the controls down the corridor in the cockpit.
“Heat and Commissary.”
“[Gravity and Commissary.]”
The two women looked at each other and frowned.
“Ok, so we both agree to cut Commissary - MREs have come a long way - but the ship is insulated! We aren’t going to freeze to death-”
“[No, but it will get cold, especially once we pass behind the planet into its’ shadow!]”
“But you’re cold-adapted; you won’t die-”
“[Neither will you if we stay in microgravity for a few days!]”
“Yeah, but you can’t cuddle easily in microgravity!”
“[That’s not im-wh. Wait, what?]”
Sarah grinned as she unzipped the top of her jumpsuit, tossing it lazily to the side. “You heard me. And seeing as how you were the one staring at me-”
“[Again, not my fault]”
“Mmm, so I guess I need to make it up to you? If you cut the heat then we’ll have no choice but to snuggle together for warmth," Sarah teased as she peeled her sports bra off, tossing it aside before running her hands along her long ponytail to straighten it again.
Her chest was adorned with a pair of fat-mounds like her own, Ksset'esth noted curiously, though Sarah's were topped with small brown disks of skin, darker than the skin surrounding them. Each was centered around a small, curious promontory, and as Ksset'esth leaned in for a closer look her flitting tongue brushed up against one, much to the apparent pleasure of Sarah. With a playful giggle she covered her chest, leaning to the side to slowly float down to the floor. “Ah! Subsystems first, then ‘emergency’ heat sharing later.”
With a determined grin Ksset’esth slid down the hall, using various handholds to propel her body forward. There was the sound of shedded clothing, a pause, a few sharp beeps, and then the emergency lights flickered - before gravity suddenly returned.
“[Done!]”
“Well! Enthusiastic, aren’t we?” teased Sarah as she walked to the open shared cabin door, dropping her pants and spinning on her heel just as Ksset’esth appeared in the doorframe.
“[Yes - I am… I am very curious-]”

"No, not exactly," she began, "they produce milk. For babies." Her tone was awkward and halting, Ksset'esth noted that this was clearly something uncomfortable for her to discuss.
