The human nodded his thanks as he ran a hand through his short black hair; the latter was now drenched in sweat and stuck out at all angles. His light-olive complexion was streaked with whatever bits of grease and detritus which had become trapped in the HVAC system over the centuries the starport had been in operation.
The Jornissian grinned as her hood rose. “[Well done! That saved us from tearing through three walls.]”
“[Still a miserable effin’ job.]” The mild near-curse made Vincento look around reflexively to make sure his nonnina was nowhere in earshot. She wasn’t even in the same city as him and yet he still feared her wrath.
“[What do you say to a beer?]”
Vincento looked down at himself and grimaced. His gray coveralls had protected him from scrapes during his ventscapade, but now he felt like a boil-in-the-bag dinner left on the stove for far too long. “How about tomorrow, Kish? I need to go and shower.”
“[Certainly! See you then.]”
“Sure thing.” Vincento walked off and wished that this bright sunny day would have a breeze to cool him off. He was no stranger to hard work; his clan was proud of their Napoli roots, but they were also very Catholic. Which in turn explained his tons of siblings, his free-floating sense of vague guilt, and his first-class work ethic. In spite of the last, he was glad to put this odious task behind him.
He was so exhausted and in his own world that he managed to walk right into someone on the way to his small dormitory room. Jornissians designed the layout of the Sn’llanfhah-Six Starport, so its central outdoor campus consisted of a multilevel, endlessly intersecting maze of ramps. It was easy to get lost if you didn’t pay attention, and right now he wanted to get to his cubicle shower in the worst way possible.
A Jornissian wriggled up a ramp which stuck out at an acute angle from an intersection ahead of him. The alien wore a baggy green hoodie which covered most of their head and body, and they held a holomap of the facility in one hand. Vincento caught a glimpse of them out of the corner of his eye, realizing too late that they were distracted by their map-reading and moving just a littlefast. The two collided with a mutual “oof!”. Even though the other was small and slender for a Jornissian, Vincento still bounced off of them with a yelp. The Jornissian let out a hiss of surprise as the impact caused a satchel to fall off of their shoulder.
“Crap!” Vincento exclaimed, then after another guilty glance around turned back to the Jornissian. “I’m so sorry…”
He trailed off. The Jornissian’s nose was just visible and covered with scales of a bright blue color he knew very well. He could just make out a pair of shining golden eyes within the depths of their cowl, eyes now widening as they stared at him. She reached up and pushed back her cowl, revealing a slim hood of the same neon-blue; a mottled black patterning spiderwebbed across the back of her hood, making her bright primary color stand out more. The pair regarded each other in silence for a long moment, a silence finally broken by Vincento.
“Essie?”
“[Vinny?]” she replied in wonderment. “[It is you!]”
E’snarn’atmnth was still as pretty as he remembered, although much larger than the last time he’d seen her. Her tongue blepped out as she scented him, and she let out a laughing hiss. “[Are you well? You smell like you’ve just run twenty miles.]”
Vincento grinned ruefully as he looked down at his rumpled appearance. “More like crawled through a half-mile of ducting. I’m working here as a repairman…sorry, ‘Starport Maintenance Engineer Level Ten’. Are you heading up or coming down?”
“[Coming down. It’s my third year in Madame Tsssn’snathn’s dance school. I’m on semester break.]”
“Going to visit your folks?”
She nodded her hood, then her eyes dipped to the side. “[I was actually heading to the admin office to look you up and see if you wanted to get some coffee.]”
Even though Sn’llanfhah-Six was a Jornissian colony, it now held enough of a human population for popular Earth fare to be readily available. The chance to catch up with a childhood friend was tempting, in spite of his wretched state.
Thanks to his aforementioned Catholic upbringing, Vincento was put to work at the age of twelve. That mostly meant working in the family business of custom cabinetry, but he did supplement that with babysitting gigs. Fortunately, the Cerronis were good friends with the ‘Atmnths, a nearby Jornissian couple who hired Vincento’s services about once a week. Their clutch was five years old and well past their ‘bitey’ phase, but the ‘Atmnths still didn’t want the snakelets getting into mischief. They thought that a twelve-year-old human would be able to handle six kids at once.
The first attempt ended in near-disaster as the siblings promptly dog-piled Vincento to absorb all of the wonderful body heat emanating from their new minder. But he persisted in spite of the bruising, and within a few months he’d become adept at dodging or wrestling away from the little heat-thieves in spite of each of them being almost his size.
After a while, it became less a matter of him coming over to keep an eye on the mischievous young sneks and more of him coming over to hang out with them. E’snarn, in particular, took a real shine to him…and he to her, if he was honest. After he’d weaned the clutch off of ‘Super Space Team’, they all then spent hours watching ‘Tales of Hrathra'sstah’, a series which was very very oh so very loosely based upon the exploits of a famous real-world Jornissian archeologist. The seven friends wasted many hours discussing what would happen after the latest cliffhanger or plot twist.
Eventually they went their separate ways, as many childhood friends do. Vincento went off to technical school and eventually landed a well-paying job at the starport. That, in turn, triggered some serious wailing and gnashing of teeth from his grandparents because he’d have to move away.
His musing cut short as E’snarn’atmnth brought her eyes up to him again. “[Wouldyou like to have some coffee? I was going to stay here for a couple of days and see the sights of the city before catching the shuttle back home.]”
Vincento nearly took a rain check for the sake of a hot shower. But seeing Essie again reawakened some long-dormant memories of happy times with his best friend. “Sure! We should probably find a place with outdoor seating, though. Wouldn’t do to knock out the other patrons with my stankiness.”

E’snarn’atmnth coiled up across from [Vincento] as she contained her impulse to wriggle with delight. Her childhood crush sat across from her as he sipped from far too small of a cup. I think the money is the only reason my nonnina doesn’t show up and kidnap me.]”
E’snarn’atmnth smiled. “<How is your grandmother?>”
“[Still as feisty as ever. When Harsak-who-devours-the-dead shows up to claim her, he’s gonna have one [hell] of a fight on his hands.]”
“<Ha! I remember when you invited us over for dinner. I still haven’t figured out how she produced all of that delicious food. I could barely move afterwards.>” The memory came with a little pang. That was the day she’d realized that she had fallen for Vinny. It could never work, of course. Apart from the species difference, he was so much older than her!
But come to think of it, it was only [seven years] difference in age. To a child that seems an eternity, but now it didn’t seem so vast a chasm. She blushed green as she realized Vinny had just asked her something.
“<Sorry, what was that? I was stuck in nostalgia mode there.>”
“[No worries. I was asking how your dance training is going.]”
“<It’s hard, but I love it. Even if Madame Tsssn’snathn is a bit of a slave-driver.>”
Vinny leaned back with a little pained grunt. “[Oof. I’m gonna be so dang sore. I remember you were always interested in dance. What made you choose Jornissian zero-g ballet?]”
E’snarn’atmnth shrugged her hood. “<It’s one of the most difficult dance styles to master, and I like a challenge. Plus I’m small and skinny, which is an advantage for zero-g ballet.>”
He took a sip of coffee while he made air quotes with his free hand. “[‘Small’. Riiiight. When I left you were maybe a [couple of feet] longer than I’m tall. I’m guessing you had a growth spurt.]” He looked over her much longer body and winked as he said the last.
She blushed green again. “<Yes, I did. But it wasn’t that dramatic. For a Jornissian, I’m still considered petite.>”
Vinny chuckled. “[Good thing you didn’t go into engineering. They’d have shoved you into the vents right alongside me.]”
That minor joke brought up a vision in E’snarn’atmnth’s mind, of her trapped in a tight space with Vinny’s smaller body pressed up against her, his sweat covering them both…
The Jornissian took a gulp of coffee as she knew, with some despair, that her crush on Vinny had never gone away, only subsided. She told herself to pull her hood in; the warmcuddle was her friend, but surely he didn’t see her as anything more than that.

That was definitely a hint. Vincento took a deep breath and considered the state of his bank account. “In that case, let’s go with Nessie’s…oh wait, do you have formal wear?”
She hefted up her satchel. “[I should be able to make do and if not, I’ll have something fabbed.]”

Vincento gave silent thanks that he’d found employment dirtside, which meant he could just let the hot water run as he turned carefully in his narrow shower. He scrubbed well, making sure to wash away any trace of grime or sweat. After all, he wanted to smell good for Essie.
That thought then brought up many others. Was he reading too much into her body language? Did she really want this to go further? For that matter, did he? The only issue that made him reluctant was the age difference. Seven years might not be that much among adults. But he’d been a pseudo-authority figure when she was a kid. Maybe this was just some weird fantasy of hers.
He turned off the shower, and as he folded himself out of his tiny bathroom he stood up straighter in determination. He’d go forward and just see how things turned out. If nothing else, at least he’d get to have a nice dinner with a good friend.
Although now, as he regarded his current wardrobe, Vincento realized he might have bitten off more than he could chew. He had some decent clothes, but nothing appropriate for the rarefied atmosphere of Nssnnan’s (AKA Nessie’s). He checked the time on his implant; he had about ninety minutes to come up with something to wear.
Vincento turned on his terminal in a mild panic, then performed a quick search. There was a nearby shop which offered fabbed-on-demand human fashions, and better yet they delivered. The only thing he had to do was use his terminal’s camera to take his measurements.
A fair bit of frantic searching followed, one in which Vincento started to feel as if he was drowning in options. But then, after twenty minutes, he finally fell upon a style and color that he knew would look good on him. Vincento winced when he saw the price of a rush-job, but he’d built up some healthy savings and figured this was a good use for them.

E’snarn’atmnth looked down along her naked body and slumped. This whole effort was ridiculous; she must have misread [Vincento’s] body language. She found one, to her great relief. After a few [minutes] of searching, her eyes lit upon the perfect dress for the evening.

Vincento tapped a finger on the table nervously as he glanced around the softly-lit restaurant, filled with the murmuring conversations of his fellow diners. Everything around him was designed with quiet luxury in mind, from the fabric-covered walls to the plush ‘dining pits’ for Jornissians to curl up in. Each ‘pit’ held a dark wooden table in the center. Unfortunately, its height meant that its top would be even with Vincento’s chin if he sat normally. Fortunately, “Nssnnan’s” had enough human clientele that they had some cushions at the ready to boost him to a proper height. Unfortunately-unfortunately, the resulting perch made Vincento feel a little ridiculous.
At least his suit fit well. Navy-blue synthwool formed the jacket and pants; Vincento hated ties, and thus he’d opted for a Nehru collar for his white shirt. He resisted the urge to tug at the latter. In fear of being late, he’d wound up instead about fifteen minutes early for their…date? Reunion? Whatever the hell this was. He just hoped he hadn’t gone overboard on the formality of his outfit. If Essie showed up in something more casual, he was going to feel stupid.
A soft murmuring started near the restaurant entrance and started spreading its way towards his table. Vincento caught a glimpse of a blue-scaled hood behind one of the tables, and stood up off of his booster cushions as E’snarn’atmnth and her escort turned the corner. The maître d’ stepped aside, and he saw her fully for the first time.
He breathed out a silent ‘wow’.
Essie’s scales sparkled like neon-blue skybursts in the muted overhead lighting. Her dress was an equally vibrant red, made of some sheer silken fabric which clung to her body. It left nothing to the imagination, showing every contour of her lithe, athletic frame. He could do nothing but stare at her as she gracefully glissaded her way down into the dining pit. Vincento managed not to stumble as he walked over to her side.
Out of his peripheral vision he could see many diners staring, their food paused halfway to their mouths. Somebody, somewhere, dropped a fork with a clatter which resounded through the silent dining room.
“[I take it you approve?]” she asked with a smile as she held out her hand.
Vincento took the proffered hand. “Ohhh, yes. It’s just like the one [Hrathra'sstah] wore when she was dining with the Dorarizin spy in episode nineteen. As I recall he responded thus.” He gently kissed the back of her hand and decided to go for broke. “If you don’t mind me saying, it looks even better on you than on her.” He didn’t miss her full-body wriggle of delight as he released her hand. After that the silence ceased as everyone went back to their meals.
The dinner went swimmingly; the staff was polite and mostly invisible, and the food was uniformly excellent. They shared a bottle of equally delicious wine, a Jornissian vintage which wouldn’t poison him. Vincento half-expected some awkward pauses in the conversation, but instead everything flowed naturally as they caught up on old acquaintances and their related gossip. Best of all, the bill didn’t break his bank account. Although some of that was due to Essie insisting on paying half.
It wasn’t until he stood up that Vincento realized how much the wine had affected him. He wasn’t drunk, but he was certainly tipsy. Thus, when Essie offered to have a ‘nightcap’ back at her hotel room he accepted without thinking twice about it.

Two voices sang out along the lamp-lit street. Any listener would know that the pair were well into their cups.

The warmcuddle shrugged. “[Eh, after the fourth run-through I just gave in and embraced the cheese. Did you hear that they’re doing a remake?]”

“[Nope. It’s going to [stink on ice].]”

Vincento glanced around Essie’s suite as they entered. The main room was bigger than expected, with a giant bowl-shaped depression lined with padding taking up most of the space. He couldn’t help but stare at the Jornissian-style bed and wonder just what he’d signed himself up for.
“[Hey,]” purred Essie from a door leading out of the bedroom. Vincento looked over and saw her crook a blue-tinged finger at him, beckoning him towards her. He obeyed as he felt his pulse quicken; her gold gaze now held nothing but lust. As he reached the doorway, he half expected her to tear his clothes off. Instead, she placed a gentle palm against his chest.
