Karen fitfully chewed her lower lip as she watched the low resolution, low frame-rate video play out in front of her.

The twins in IT had forwarded this to her over the weekend. Hessren and Hassran had history with Karen, in the sense that when things were going well, all three of them had a lot of time on their hands. “Manipulator appendages,” she corrected herself aloud. Manipulator appendages was the more inclusive term. In between restoring backups and holding diversity awareness seminar’s, she would visit them in their “dungeon” in the data-center. They would watch old holographic programs, argue over the best and worst VR releases, and chat about other admittedly niche hobby activities. When she had slow days, she still needed to find a way to ration out her duties. They had basically automated the entire IT department with a terrifying volume of scripts, so it was frankly necessary for them to spend time away from their desks, not working, to keep all of their performance metrics looking smooth. When they didn’t have free time to hang out, they both tended to swap interesting things they’d found on the net. She’d assumed the video detailing the violation of at least a dozen company policies on fraternization, dress code, and . . . well . . . violation, had just been a something like a cute cat video they wanted to inconspicuously sneak into her inbox over the weekend.

A hopeful little smile formed on her face as she clicked down the hall in her black high heels. After pressing the call button, the elevator doors dinged open, and she stepped inside.
“Going down,” she muttered to herself as the doors on the lift slid closed. She keyed the code for the bottom sub-level, riding all the way down to their in-house data-center.
The data-center was poorly lit, stank of ozone, and filled with electromagnetic interference. The Dorarizen hated the smell, it gave Karnakians headaches to look at, and humans had a weird thing about working in poorly lit basements, but the Hessren and Hassran loved it. Warm, dry, low foot traffic, and lots of nooks and crannies only they could work in comfortably, it was a home away from home for them.

Hessren’s body language was meek, but resolute. Apologetic, even, as his hood drooped. Hassran continued loading little figurines into a box, handling each one with loving care.
Entirely bewildered, Karen barely managed to stammer out. “W-well, first of all I can’t accept a letter of resignation from anyone other than one resigning, either that or a direct message of resignation. You have to provide active and informed consent to employment termination, and because it’s being passed through an intermediary-” She shook her head sharply. “N-never mind, it’s in the handbook, and second of all . . . What!? Why?”
Hassran looked up from a toy Jornissian Power-Commando trooper. Actually, it was Wyld-Fang Storm-Commander, which was part of a Power-Commando crossover with GalaWar, but the distinction wasn’t as important to Karen as what Hassran responded with. “Well, umm . . . you’ve probably seen that email we sent you by now. And, umm, you weren’t supposed to get that.”
He fiddled with the model’s manipulator appendages, making it salute. “I was trying to forward it to Aurgrek-of-Krrngetk. And, it was late. Both of your addresses start with ‘SR’ and I kinda just let auto-complete take care of the rest . . .”
Hessren coiled up on himself, descending to Karen’s height. “We . . . know you have to let us go. It was really nice working with you. And, thanks for watching all of ‘Power-Commando’s’ with us. We’ll just-”
She held up a hand to silence him. “No. Nope. No more. Nobody is getting fired. Not you two, not Miko, not Zrgranza-of-Azgdng, and definitely not me. You know why? Because you’re going to delete that video, you’re not passing on a report to Aurgrek-of-Krrngetk, and we’re not ruining those two’s careers.”
A very long, pregnant pause filled the air, along with considerable confusion. The twin Jornissian’s exchanged glances.
“Umm . . . while this turn of events isn’t unwelcome, it is rather surprising?” Hessren glanced between Karenand Hassran, his tone somewhere between a question and a statement. “. . . so why are we not telling Aurgrek-of-Krrngetk again? And why are we covering up for Miko and Zrgranza-of-Azgdng? And why are we not fired for collecting and distributing pornography on the office network?”
Karen huffed quietly, stamping her foot with a sharp clack, in a stern display of resolve. “Because Aurgrek-of-Krrngetk doesn’t need to know. Because Miko and Zrgranza-of-Azgdng have something worth protecting. And because I like you two, you’re my only friends here, and because . . . because helping those two get together is as close as I’m probably going to get to a relationship on this station!” Her cheeks flushed sharply. One, she felt downright scandalous flaunting the rules like this, two, it was an uncharacteristically emotional outburst from her, and three . . . well she had been a little flushed all morning and this was just a continuation of that.

Karen blinked slowly. Something in her brain had jammed. “Well, umm, not just Aurgrek-of-Krrngetk. I mean, Hessren thinks it’s pretty hot too.”
Hessren snapped upright, coiling around Hassran and trying to cover his mouth with his manipulator appendages. “No I don’t! Totally not into humans at all!
