You could always use the other recorder for just USB microphone usage since its main problem is corrupting files on the SD card
Yeah, I guess it's a lot like "HDR Audio"! As for connecting to a PC, a lot of audio software supports floating point audio natively, so I'd hoped that I'd be able to record straight into Audacity without having to do anything to the signal. Using it as a mic for calls or whatever might be harder though, but I don't really want to do that anyway

New TOY!! Ya. Seems very similar to HDR-imaging. Which, upon display, need to be rendered to fit the puny screen. Which could be done with the float-codec as well. I mean, the camera does kind of the same thing: auto gain control to match an incoming signal to the available bandwidth. so if you connected the new mic live to a computer over USB, the computer would need to "render" the HDR-audio into integer-audio by applying some sort of algorithm. And it would probably look like automatic gain control :)
