**sorry, again: when I said “older couples,” I meant that she was ~18 and her partners were in their 30s. My parents rejected it entirely & pretended they were just her friends. I tried to be the understanding one, but my sister often hid the abuse because she was already embarrassed by her nontraditional relationship & even her therapists were judgmental. Basically, I didn’t mean to come across as ageist, more like my sister’s brain wasn’t finished developing & she was being manipulated by a couple of different husbands whose wives were gaslighted & ridiculed to the point of complete submission. My sister was a companion & partner to the wives, but primarily a target/object/trophy for the men. Polyamory is obviously more complex than monogamy, but it can be healthy and mutually rewarding for all members. Unfortunately, jealousy is sometimes a factor. It can lead to animosity or confusion if open & honest communication isn’t consistently practiced.

My younger sister (24) has been through a lot of sexual trauma & misunderstandings. She’s likely on the spectrum (by her own assessment) and has trouble with boundaries. I shared this story with her because I thought it could help show her a truly beautiful lgbtq+ relationship. She identifies as polyamorous & pansexual. She’s been sought out as a “unicorn” by older couples & has been taken advantage of emotionally, mentally, & physically. I want to share the message I sent to her, but I need to clarify that I prefaced the message implying that Novae “looks kinda lame,” which is not at all how I meant the comment to come across. I didn’t want her to assume I was just reading another lame romance comic haha - gotta make sure she realizes this comic is special as heck. Ok, without further ado, the message I sent my sister about Novae: “K u gotta trust me because I know it looks kinda lame, but this is the most lovely panromantic, demisexual relationship representation I've ever seen in a comic (at least based on my limited understanding) & it's also got a kickass backdrop of 1600s France during the scientific revolution & a phenomenally illustrated layout & a wholesome/passionate relationship between a couple -- with so much similarity that is perceived as difference; they're the least ‘unlikely’ pair I can imagine, though their ‘worlds’ are strikingly different...I love it.” I described the best type of people she and I tend to fall for - seemingly quite different from ourselves, but emotionally harmonious & cognitively in-tune with our passions & goals. I also feel like my demi-sexuality, for me specifically, was brought on by past trauma, so it’s always heart-meltingly wonderful to see such respect for boundaries & direct communication 💖💘💝💗 I have to know someone & trust them fully before I’m comfortable being intimate, but my partner understands & does his best to be attentive to my subtle hesitancies. Thank you again for this inspiring work of art. You’ve legitimately inspired me to learn how to draw so I can turn my writing into a mixed media project 😊 Thank you for all the tutorials too!!
