There was plenty of meat, cheese, lettuce and tomato packed between the two freshly baked loaves of bread. The man behind the counter barely said anything other than asking for James' name. James had not, but he figured it must have been pretty bad if Antoine didn't want to even sit at one. They started walking back down the way they came. To James, the city had always been larger than life. Even now, he didn't know what to expect from everything around him. Everyone always looked so busy and things moved so fast, he wondered if he could keep up. Even after the few weeks, James would catch himself looking up at the buildings wondering how they could make them so tall.
It was to his detriment as he wasn't looking where he was going. And he barely even realized when he'd bumped into someone. People were a bit more cold, unwilling to acknowledge that he was there.

"Warkies?"

“Uhh… Can’t say that I do,” James said. He was already opening the bag and pulling out his sandwich.

But James had already put his sandwich out in front of him. One of the Warkies cautiously stepped forward. His eyes were drifting between James and the sandwich. He had something else to focus on. ‘What are Warkies?’ even if he was at work, he still went through and Googled it. There was no way he was going to ask people. Not after the way Antoine acted.
Searching through the cold dark internet, he hoped he’d at least get a bit better of a picture of what they were. Most websites seemed to call them parasites. While others seemed to treat them like pets. But it was weird because of how human they looked. Well the healthy ones looked like absolute giants of even the largest of men. But besides that, it would be near impossible to tell that they weren’t. Other than the amber color of their eyes. The vibrant reddish orange color shined brightly, drawing James in even more. “You know,” Antoine stood behind James' desk, “looking up porn on company computers is strictly prohibited…”

That’s when the bus had arrived. People were getting off and he needed to get on. “GAH!” he shouted to the air. “Come on. You too,” he pulled at the two Warkies and pushed them onto the bus. The driver gave him a suspicious side eye but didn’t say anything. “Sit,” he commanded them and the two Warkies obeyed.
They rode all the way back to his apartment. Both stared up at him with their amber eyes. There was an innocence to them that James just couldn’t tell why people would hate them so much. But then again maybe he was just feeling that way because one of them had just saved his life.
When he got inside, he told them to sit on the couch. He went to the closet to get some alcohol and then pulled away the napkins. “Shit…” he groaned at the cut. Blood had already seeped through the napkins. James went and grabbed a rag and put some of the alcohol on it. They still fried up pretty well on the pan as he heated them up. The smell of the cooking meat brought the two Warkies into the kitchen. Their mouths watered as the steam lifted off the burgers and into the air. Their amber eyes looking at the skillet, but still waiting patiently.

The smaller of the Warkie walked over to him with more of the frozen patties. He bit into them but they wouldn’t break. “You want more?” The Warkie nodded and the second came back to attention as well. “Ok… But you can’t eat mine this time. Got it?” The bigger one nodded. “Good.”
James wondered if they actually weren’t just human. They sure as Hell seemed like it. He knew he’d need to do more research. But he couldn’t believe that they could grow as big as they said online. These two were even shorter than him. And their ribs were practically showing. Apart from the large amount of energy they seemed to have, he wasn’t sure if there were different types or what.
He mulled it over as he ate his burger. The Warkies had finished their just as quickly as they had the first time. Their eyes were on his, but also flashing back to the still frozen ones. “Still?” They nodded. “Oh man… Where are you hiding it all?” But the realization that they probably hadn’t eaten much in days was starting to dawn on him. “I don’t want to get you sick so we’ll wait a little bit okay?”
The two nodded. “Let’s look at that knife wound though,” the bigger of the two lifted up his arm with the rag on it and showed James. “Wait… This can’t be right…” Even if it wasn’t that deep of a cut, there couldn’t have been nothing there. Not even a scab. Dried blood was still on the rag and his arm, but any indication of a wound was completely absent. It looked more like he just spilt ketchup on himself rather than gotten stabbed.
“This is the arm that got cut?” James asked. The Warkie nodded. “Sheesh! I really need to learn more about you…” He looked over the two and realized that he was still treating them like he didn’t know them. “You need a name.” The two seemed excited over the idea. They nearly tackled him as he said it. “Calm down… Calm down. You can be Hunter,” he pointed at the bigger one, “and you’ll be Rosco.”
The two jumped on him again, trying their best to show their excitement. Little yips and yaps came out of their mouths as they padded their hands against his body. “You like that?” James asked. “How about some new clothes too?”
He led them to the bathroom to get cleaned up. Dirt seemed to have been caked onto their bodies. James started to wonder how old they were. They looked to be about a human in their 20’s. They still ate like they were animals, but at least they didn’t ask for more. Looking in his freezer, James could see he would need more food. After they finished he went back to his room and changed into his pajamas. “Alright. Time for bed,” he said. They looked at each other and then him. “Oh right… You don’t have a bed… I guess… I guess for tonight you can sleep with me.” Hunter and Rosco followed him back to his bed and crawled up into it.
