“That’s good. That’s good.” He replied unsure what to do with the conversation. Luckily Jeff was bothering his brother Stan again so it gave him a perfect excuse to change the conversation. “Hey you two cut it out!”
Even though they were 18 and 19, Jeff still liked to pick on his little brother. With little taunts and teases Stan was usually pretty quiet. However he somehow took a liking to me. I didn’t know what it was but he seemed to like me a whole lot more than I figured someone I only saw at family gatherings should.
Stan stomped his foot. “But he started it…” he whined.
“And I’m ending it,” his dad tried to sound tough. “Why don’t you guys go find something to do?”
“Have Stan clean his room,” Mrs. Cross said. “I’ve been telling him to do that all week and he still hasn’t…”
“Is that true?” Mr. Cross asked.
Stan just lowered his head and headed up to his room. Mr. Cross shook his head while Jeff smiled at his success. The rest of us crowded in the kitchen. I just felt like I was in the way. “You know maybe I’ll go help him…” I offered.
The rest looked up at me confused. “You don’t have to dear,” Mrs. Cross said. “He can clean his own room.”
“Nah its fine. I think I’ll go have a look,” I said already leaving the kitchen. It’s not like I knew what to talk to them about anyway.
I headed up to Stan’s room. It was cluttered with all kinds of toys and games. Even though he was heading off to college this next year, his room looked more like a kid’s room than a young adult. I kept it to myself as we started to clean up. He seemed interested in some game that was coming out soon but I couldn’t give a shit. He just kept talking and talking. “There it is! I thought I lost you!” he held up a notebook really high and started hugging it. “I almost started to think you were just a piece of my imagination…”
His narration was pretty good but I still needed more information. “What is that?”
“It’s my death note,” he paused as though it was some kind of joke. I gave him a pity laugh unsure what it was supposed to be referencing. “I’m joking,” he declared. “It’s my imagination book. When I was younger I got this from my grandparent’s house. They said it was magic. At first I didn’t believe them but then I started to test it out. Little things at first. But now I’ve found you,” he grinned pulling the bound pieces of paper to his face. “I’ve missed you so much.”
“Wait… What?” I asked scratching my head. “So what’s that thing?”
Stan just laughed. “It’s alright. I get it. I probably sound crazy. But whatever you write in this notebook becomes real.”
“Really..?” I realized he was just messing with me now.
“Yeah really! But so far besides grandpa I was the only one able to make it work.”

“Yeah! Here let me show you. What do you want to change?” Stan seemed really earnest as he asked. He held the notebook up and a pen and stared at me. “Go on. What would you like to change?”
The question was so simple and I knew the answer right away. I just didn’t want to answer it. “I’ll believe you if that thing makes me look like I could model,” I mocked. It was still a way to hide some of my insecurities. “Yeah,” Mr. Cross smiled as he separated the two of us. “I think he’s at least brave enough.” His whole body shook as he laughed. “Why not show us a little bit of a workout?”
“A workout? But won’t the girls hate the smell?” I asked. I’d put deodorant on this morning but even a quick workout would make me sweaty again.

Stephanie just rolled her eyes. “So dinner’s still going to be a little bit… You guys can keep enjoying yourselves.” It was obviously something they’d done numerous times. I almost felt like I should have went after her but Stan entered the gym.
“Since dinner will still be a bit; let’s go watch some football,” he offered.
“Football!?” Jeff cheered. “Fuck yeah football!” His dad shared the same excitement as they headed to the living room. The two left the gym excited to watch the game. I was a bit confused as I now stared up at Stan as well. Something about him seemed a little different but I couldn’t quite place it.

I watched a little in horror, wondering just how many calories they were actually eating. But as I watched I couldn’t help but notice something else. Their clothes almost seemed to be getting tighter.
Jeff, in his white wife-beater, looked like he was even struggling even more to keep it on.
