None of this made any sense to the other eleven people in the classroom but he was the first to verbalize his confusion. “So if we,” he paused, “say that phrase, we’ll turn into a big buff guy like you?”
“Yep,” Doug leaned his body back against the desk. His large body sat comfortably on the desk as he leaned more of his weight onto it. “That’s exactly what will happen.”
“But why?” Kyle spoke up. He was on the far left side of the classroom with his notebook out, ready to take notes.
Doug shrugged. “You’ll have to guess who the guy in charge.”
“Do you know who it is,” Allen asked again.
“I do,” Doug said.
Dr. Schaffer got his confidence back. “So you were the one who was behind it all? Right? That’s how you were able to get the projector all set up and ready to go.” He started pacing back and forth on the stage throwing out the accusation. Then stopping in front of Doug; pointing his finger up in his face.
“You do remember the rule, right? Are you ready to bet everything on saying it was me?” Doug asked calmly. Despite having his teacher right up in front of him, his cool demeanor didn’t waver. “Huh?” he thrust his face forward asserting himself.
Dr. Schaffer’s mouth dropped; his confidence shaken once more. “I guess not…” He started pacing across the stage again, looking over all the students. He’d handpicked each and every one of them. How could someone so despicable sneak past his senses. His judge of character was unprecedented. Then he went back to the roster. There was a mistake. He was only supposed to have nine students and a teacher’s aide. But there were ten people there.
“At least you noticed,” Doug mocked him.
However Dr. Schaffer went over the list again. He could visibly remember handpicking each and every one of them. Looking over the group, he knew he had had a private meeting with each and every one of them.
Allen was first to break the silence again. “If you aren’t the perpetrator, then how do you know who is?”
Doug just laughed. “You just watched me transform from a pudgy overweight guy to this,” Doug showed his massively muscular body off. Even covered up, muscles bulged through the soft fabric o “It’s reality bending power. Is it really that hard to believe that he couldn’t pass on the knowledge at the same time? C’mon… You guys are supposed to be smart. Picked specifically for your parent’s money and ability to pass tests.” A snide grin crossed his face as he insulted the group.
The group just stared. Not a smile among them. Dr. Schaffer wasn’t going to let that last comment stand either. “That’s not true! They all have potential to be far better than they are now.”
“Everyone has that potential,” Doug cut him off. “Just a series of good choices, dedication, and occasionally the right opportunity anyone can succeed.” His attention turned back to the group of students though. “However, lying, cheating, stealing, forging documents, money and gaming the system are also profitable ways to game the system as well.”
“None of these students have done that!” Dr. Schaffer shouted. He stomped back over to Doug. His voice still raised. “I handpicked each and every one of them. I combed through their profiles. I had meetings with every single one of them AND their parents. Don’t tell me who is and isn’t worthy of my class!”
Doug scoffed. The devious grin didn’t leave his face. “You know the best way to get away with something is to never let anyone know. Maybe, just maybe, they aren’t as squeaky clean as you think. Eh?” He paused watching the disbelief crawl back onto Dr. Schaffer’s face.
Dr. Schaffer turned around and stared at the class. Was there something he’d missed? He was always so thorough with his interviews. They were chosen for a reason. Passed tests they couldn’t cheat on. Have spectacular GPA’s with outstanding records. “You aren’t the Doug I know,” he tried to insult the other man.
“Maybe, it’s because you never knew me,” Doug’s tone went grim, eyes dark with an immense hatred. Dr. Schaffer backed down. He went and sat on the stool next to the computer, almost setting himself into a time out. “Anyways,” he turned back to the class, “I feel as though I need a demonstration. Somehow there still seem to be some people who don’t believe me. So let’s go down the list. Richie A. Never caught stealing and copying all the tests and homework for your junior and senior year. Then continued to slack off and let people do the homework first and then ask for the answers in college.”
Richie sunk lower into his chair. “I still knew it all… Just didn’t want to waste time studying… It’s a waste of time… Wanted to play video games...”
Doug continued. “Bradly B. forged documents and lied on your application to get into this college.”
Bradly just nodded. “The school shut down. What was anyone going to do? They couldn’t call anyone to verify… Just had to change some of the numbers and well… College is expensive. It saved me a lot of money switching B+’s and A-‘s to just A’s.”
“Kyle B. agreed to do the homework for some of the jocks and then told the teacher’s they were forcing you to do it.”
Kyle smiled. “It was so fucking easy. School even lost that year too. Just had to pretend they’d been bullying me and then come in with a black eye and the teachers were all over me. They loved it.”
“Are you serious?” another student asked.
Dr. Schaffer even leaned forward. “And you’re proud of it?”
“Course I am,” Kyle’s smile didn’t falter. “You think I care about them? I’m from a small town anyways. Not like they’re fucking going anywhere with their lives. And I got to have a bit of fun.”
“That’s demented...” a student muttered.
However Doug continued. “Allen C. Planted weed and prescription pills into student’s bags who were doing better than him or almost doing better than him.”
“Guilty,” Allen had the same laise a faire attitude as Kyle. He just shifted his weight on his desk.
“Vince C…”
“Are you fucking kidding!?” Vince shouted. He stood up from his chair. “I’m being put on the same level as those two!? That's criminal! That’s downright criminal behavior. Oh no." he mocked, "I just happened to take some of the tests from the teacher, cheated here and there, and changed some of the answers on the tests I got back. Or asked for extensions when I didn’t need them. But I’m supposed to be as bad as them? Call the cops! If you know they did it and have proof fucking arrest them! Don’t you two have anything to say about it?”
Allen’s glazed over eyes looked uncaringly at Vince. “I don’t like losing. Don’t get in my way and we won’t have a problem.”
“I second that,” Kyle held his hand up. “But sometimes it’s fun to mess with people…”
“Second,” Allen smirked back at Kyle.
Vince started making his way out of the row he was sitting in. His asthma was acting up. He felt constricted. Confined to a room far too small for him. “I’ve got to get out of here. This is too crazy for me. I need to go…” He pushed his way to the door. It was his only focus. He had to get out. He opened the doors. The fresh air felt so good on his face. “What a stupid game…” he took another deep breath still standing in the doorway. When Doug was reading off the charges he figured it’d be the same stupid stuff he had gotten away with.
But hearing what Kyle had done, and then Allen, made him feel sick. His face felt hot. It was hard to think. He didn’t want other people to fail, he just wanted to succeed. And cheating wasn’t so bad, it was just a time saver. Nothing like them. He wasn’t like them. He didn’t deserve this. He didn’t deserve to lose his scholarship or accolades because of this stupid game. He laughed at the idea. “Like I’d ever say, ‘I want to be big-ger…’”
He slowed his last word down as he realized what he just said. “Fuck…” He could already feel something different about his body. Looking down it wasn’t the same.
