Points of each process
To make the most of the vertical composition, the background is widely packed from the sky to the ground to create depth.
2,線画・下塗り line drawing and base color
As for the background, it is easier to shape it with painting later on, so I only drew it to the extent of what it looks like.
The time of day setting was daytime and sunny skies, so I was conscious of strong contrasts.
There are two light sources - sunlight and flames - and I assumed that the intensity of the light is sunlight > flames.
Due to the influence of the flame, warm colours are stronger around the characters.
For the rocky area underfoot, I initially assumed normal rocks, but added plants as I felt they were lacking as they were generally composed of the same motifs and colours.
The four corners of the screen are slightly darkened by multiplication and lightly blurred.
In addition to making the characters stand out, the effect is to create a camera-like effect and give the screen a sense of reality.
As the background makes up a large proportion of the illustration, I will also write about what I am conscious of when drawing the background.
Tips about backgrounds
When drawing silhouettes
Use a hard brush when creating silhouettes.
This is because using a soft brush, such as an airbrush, makes it difficult to create a clear silhouette and tends to give an ambiguous impression.
When expressing perspective, the trick is not to blur the outline easily, but to use light and dark colours and hues.
Placement of motifs with a sense of perspective
Draw the background to match the perspective.
It is not necessary to match everything exactly to the perspective, but the lines should match the perspective in places.
Draw large, detailed objects that are close to the perspective.
Conversely, draw distant objects simply and small.
It is easier to express perspective if the motifs are arranged in a zigzag pattern.
Use of photographs
1, Prepare royalty-free photos.
The photo you choose should have clear shadows.
2, Colour correct the photo → binarise it to black and white.
If a photograph is used as it is for an illustration, it will appear to float because of the amount of detail information compared to the hand-drawn part.
Therefore, by binarising, the amount of information is reduced by crushing the details.
3, 'Convert luminance to transparency' to make white areas transparent.
Clip and shape the photo to the area you want to include.
4, Draw in highlights and details.
Shape and size of motifs
When drawing motifs of natural objects such as rocks, it is necessary to vary their size and shape, as the same size would look unnatural and monotonous.
In this work, I increased the number of steps on the scaffolding ground so that the sizes of large, medium and small objects are balanced.
