【Tips】髪の毛について（About the hair）
In this issue, I will explain tips about hair.
The main contents are as follows
-Structure of hair
-Back and front of the back hair
-Flow of hair
-Width of hair ends
-Back and front of hair strands
-About painting
-Structure of hair
Roughly, the basic hair composition is as follows
1,Front part of hair (blue line)
2,Side part of hair (green line)
3,Back hair part (yellow line)
The only other difference is whether the hair is long or short, tied up, etc.
Depending on the character, cowlick may be added.
In my case, I tend to incorporate it into characters who are full of energy and are tomboyish.
-Back and front of the back hair
When drawing the back of the hair, be aware of the back and front sides of the surface to create a three-dimensional effect.
It is easier to understand long back hair if you consider it as a piece of cloth↓
After setting up the general both side, the detailed hair flow is drawn.
The method of "big picture -> the details" is a useful concept for any process, regardless of the hair.
If you try to work on the details first, it often takes a long time and the overall balance becomes unbalanced.
-Flow of hair
This is especially important for drawing long hair.
1,Set up a rough hair flow.
Imagine where the wind is blowing from.
The flow of the hair should be in the same direction as the way the skirt or other fabric is blowing, so that it looks natural.
2,Draw hair along the set direction
As mentioned above, it is easier to draw the hair roughly and then draw the details.
3,Add hair that goes against the flow.
The image is that the tips of the hair intersect with the ends of the hair.
If all the hairs have the same flow, it will be monotonous and unappealing.
However, too much hair that goes against the flow will give a messy impression, so use moderation.
-Width of hair ends
Now that I have described the parts of the hair that relate to the big picture, I will write about the details.
The detail in hair is the tip of the hair.
When I draw the tips of hair, I try to avoid consecutive hair tips of the same width.
To avoid monotony, I make the width of the hair ends strong and weak.
The impression of the pattern changes depending on the extent of this strength and weakness.
Large: The tips of the hairs stand out one by one, giving a realistic impression.
Small: Cute and deformed impression
-Back and front of hair strands
Earlier I wrote about the back of the hair itself, now let's talk about the hair bunches.
The basics are the same here, with both side being set roughly, and then the details are worked out.
-About painting
There are many ways to apply hair, here is how I am currently doing it.
1,Apply a base coat.
2,Apply a rough shadow.
At this stage, if you add fine shadows along the hair line, it will be difficult to tell where the light source is and the balance will be bad, so do not paint the details.
3, Add fine shadows.
Add detailed shadows with the hairline in mind.
The trick is not to add too much shadow in areas that are lit.
4,Highlight roughly.
5,Adjust details.
Draw in detailed highlights and darken the shadows in areas where light is blocked.
Finally, add a few fine hairs to add realism.

Thank you! Whenever I think about poses for characters, I look for reference images on Pinterest. This website is very useful! Your problem of lack of movement in character poses may be solved by doing some research on "contrapposto"
Thank you for the great guide! If I may ask, how do you decide on the pose and posture of your characters when you draw them? My attempts always seem very static and lifeless. Do you use a website for reference photos? Thank you!
Thank you!
