If Microsoft remove day one games from game pass, Xbox will die completely as a console manufacturer, who would pay £22.99 a month to get old games, no one, game pass is basically xbox's only revenue except the 30% they get from 3rd party games on the store. They taught their players not to buy games and to instead subscribe to game pass, there's no coming back from that.

Going to be honest, it is a little disheartening hearing both Matty and Brad advocate so strongly for exclusives to return. I guess my only counter at this point is to ask a hypothetical. If you love exclusives so much because they “allow for so many games to get created that wouldn’t otherwise”, would you also prefer for other industries to take the walled garden approach? Should Disney come out as say the only way you can watch Star Wars, Marvel, and Disney animation content is by purchasing a Disney branded TV? Should Taylor Swift make a deal with Apple so the only way you can listen to her music is on an Apple device? And no, streaming platforms like Netflix are not the same. I can download the Netflix app on any smart device ever made and therefore it is an easy thing to subscribe to another platform on the same TV if I don’t like their business practices. Have a “we finally had a competitor in the industry challenge the walled garden ecosystem just for fans to shoot it down in preference of a system that keeps you locked to a specific brand of plastic, kind of day”

Shoutout to this crew for having an intelligent and thoughtful conversation about this situation. Last weekend I listened to a few Xbox podcasts I normally wouldn’t because I was curious what they had to say about Phil and Sarah. What I found was the exact same conversation every single time: “You know, if there’s one thing you gotta give Phil credit for…” “Say what you want about Phil, but he’s a true gamer.” “One time he joined my Fallout 76 server and emoted at me!” I’m not arguing that Phil accomplished nothing during his tenure. But it’s painfully obvious that a significant portion of the Xbox community is so blinded by their perception of Phil as their “friend” that they’re incapable of critically evaluating his failures as a leader. They’re so enamored with the selfies at Summer Game Fest or The Game Awards that they refuse to acknowledge a basic reality: among the big three platform holders, Xbox is the only one putting all of their first party titles in a subscription service, the only one who has a CEO touting his gamer sensibilities and engaging parasocially with the community, and they also happen to be the only one failing catastrophically. You can respect someone personally and still hold them accountable professionally. I don’t think most of the creators in the Xbox sphere understand that.
