This is still his first week after coming back from Maggie and talking to that Ralts online. Those events and the thoughts they stirred, are still fresh in his mind. And if you look back at those pages with him using Zen's illusion, his face is flat. Emotionless. No smile, no grin, no "I'm a woman and enjoying it", no smirking "You're in over your head" like he did with that tauros at the beginning. He's NOT in a confident state right now, so it makes sense that Zen could get through to him right now and make him think.
