Nigel you gotta watch a video at some point about Ateez lore so you can learn about Halateez (them in the black masks), World Z, the white mask guy, and the Chromer cause once you catch up to their current albums it's all gonna tie together. Hala Hala was the intro to Halateez and Say My Name shows us the members (from World A) meeting Halateez (from world Z aka scrictland) for the first time. Its a lot but I think it'll help if you learn as you go so you start off small and work your way up). OR you can just listen for the music lol it's up to you ofc.

In a very rare case for Kpop, the other outfits are not symbolic or a metaphor. They're part of the lore, that is Ateez from another universe, aka Halateez or The Black Pirates. I think whoever made that video came from the perspective of how Kpop MV's usually are but didn't know anything about Ateez's lore.

Fun fact: in hongjoong's verse in say my name he spells out 'ateez' using the first syllable of each line. It's at 23:03 in this video and if you're trying to hear it it's right after he says 'ooh ya' and he separates the syllables using the korean pronunciation of ateez which is ai-ee-tee-ju. the ju part is 'zoom in here cause im the captain' :)

In my opinion, Hala Hala is a "performance song", I doesn't NEED the performance to work, but like, it gets 10x BETTER with it. I makes me feel like it's a song that was made FOR this performance, and not the other way around (if that makes sense). For Hala Hala 2018/19 was the era for a lot of anti drops in kpop songs. Huge buildup, just to pull back a lot of the instruments in the chorus. But also Ateez’s music is heavily tied to their lore and the lyrics might make more sense if you actually watch the videos as well as the reasons why some songs are even produced the way they are. Hala Hala is a performance song more than anything, intended to be danced to and an introduction to Ateez’s doppelgängers

I will say that you can feel when they find their identity as performers a bit later on, and they didn't have lots of funds in this era (in Say My Name, the reason other members filled in as 'alter egos' was because they didnt have the budget for effects to make it happen, though they later could in Answer)

To be honest, I look at lots of Ateez songs with a theatrical lens. I dont go in expecting chorus drops or anything like that - their songs have this kind of audio-visual element because of how closely their lore and performances tie in, which is just so different from anything else. There's often this swelling build that culminates in an explosive final chorus, like a musical theatre reprise. They don't build to a chorus but to the full climax. Every song is a dramatic feast and in my head not necessarily designed to be categorised as just a pop song or a rap song etc.

I had a feeling this album wouldn’t fit your tastes as much, but the next album with wave and utopia is definitely one I think you’ll love! SMN is one of my absolute die hard favorite title tracks from ateez, and honestly listening to that song live, seeing the performance, and chanting “say my name” and “a to the z” with a stadium full of fans is one unforgettable experience! That song is insane live! The Promise MV was filmed during their first European tour and the set locations were taken in different parts throughout their tour, most being from Russia. I’m pretty sure it was the last part of their M2 show “Long Journey” and I definitely recommend watching it! It’s actually so crazy seeing how far they’ve come and just how little of a budget they had compared to so many of the groups that they debuted alongside with during their rookie days. Going through this journey again with you makes me remember just how much they’ve been through and how hard they’ve worked fr 😭 I think you’ll definitely need to either sit down and watch an extensive video of their lore or just completely ignore it, there’s no in between LMAO! (I would recommend getting into it more deeply tho bc it’s one aspect of ateez that made them incredibly popular and one of the best parts of keeping up with their releases). The video you watched didn’t really explain the “alter-egos” the way that we know them now. Black fedora ateez (known as halateez or the black pirates) are ateez from Universe Z (a dystopian tyrannical version of our current dimension). I realllllly recommend watching the diary film when you get to the first album of the fever series and watching a lore explanation video before reacting to the fever series. It’ll make your life a LOT easier trying to understand their lore 😭

I maintain the opinion that Treasure Ep. 3 (the next album he's reacting to) is going to be his favorite of the treasure series. About the likes and dislikes in songs, I get what he says, is the same with me with a few songs, I still like them a lot, but because somehow Ateez made it interesting to me, cause I am never seeking that genre or vibe, like I know it sounds weird, but I am not a big R&B fan, I always enjoyed metal and classical music, 80's, so usually I seek those genres, but maybe cause I am so in love with their tones and their twists I actually like a lot their R&b stuff. So Ateez can make me listen to any genre cause they kind of make it their own. Desire is just chef's kiss to me lol Fight me!! lol I think a lot of their older songs for lack of resources didn't have the best mixing and production, but I still love them. Yes! Yeosang has two cover songs. Both released as a his birthday gift to us last year and this year. One is called Hug Me and it was his first cover song and hit around 4 million views!!! The second song is another cover song that he would listen to during his training days. The mv is his true story about his struggles to have good grades and be a trainee. You see him coming home late at night studying trying to stay up. His friends knew he was a trainee so they encouraged him and in one scene Yeosang wakes up in his desk and see a banana milk with a note that says Go For It (or something like that) from a friend. Another scene at the end each student has a locker with their name on it and under it is what they want to be. Yeosang was shy/embarrassed to put what he wanted to be, but he put under his name Artist. 😭😭🥹 Actually he has a third cover the very first time we heard him sing was in their practice room I think he was doing a live talking to Atiny. Yes please react to those!!! If you want to get an understanding about the MV’s there’s a channel called bookish theories and she describes the meaning in detail. But lots of people have different opinions about Halateez and the different worlds.

Nigel - this EP starts the HEAVY involvement of the Lore - it’s tricky to understand at times I wish I could explain it. But the “weak” Ateez are the “black pirates” or “sky pirates” and how they’re ship has fallen onto land and they are now trying to rebuild their ship and escape the world they fell into….i think atleast that’s how I understand it? I know Halateez..the “black outfits” come up more than once, they are their alter egos and they call on eachother to help fight in World Z…again I think there’s a master video made by Atiny explaining it alot better. The video you watched also has a good explanation for just interpretation on how you can relate it to yourself. Also this is probably my favorite EP in the treasure series - can’t wait to see more ❤️

When you see them in black with the hats that’s their alter egos from the other dimension Halateez. If you remember from the guide in Ateez lore there’s 2 worlds. World A and world Z. Halateez are from world Z where the uprising/revolution is happening.

They were still rookies at this point though because it had been less than a year since debut. So it was still unheard of and incredible the came out with this with masks covering their faces and just danced as rookies! Since visuals are so important in KPop no one else had done anything like this before.

They had already debuted at this point! You listened to their debut album with pirate king and treasure. EP just means it’s a mini album with only 5 or 6 songs. Their first full album was the one you listened to first.

take the lyrics shown on color coded lyric videos with a grain of salt lol. The people who make those literally just copy and paste the Korean lyrics into google translate so a lot of times they don’t make total sense or are wrong unfortunately.

Hala hala actually is related to Halazia! In their lore Ateez alternate egos are named Halateez. So the song Hala Hala is where were first introduced to their alternate versions. And then the song Halazia is also about them! When you see the phrase Hala it’s always connected to their lore.

I feel like ateez is just SO choreography. like they ARE choreo. and you listening to songs that said choreo elevates is always gonna skew your opinion on the first listen :( I understand waiting on the mv's and doing them after but I cannottttttt relate at all and certain songs have mv's for a reason! I love that you're always honest tho, respect fr can't wait for you to get into the dance practices!!! :))))
