I don't fawn/comply as a defense mechanism, and no shame on anyone who does—we all cope with traumatic experiences in different ways. That said, I feel Anh's dissociated, unhinged grin in my soulmeats. It's crept across my own face too many times. "I'm gonna do this thing, no matter how much it physically/emotionally hurts me to do, because I've decided it needs to be done. Everything will be better if I just suffer through this one thing, which is a really small thing when you think about it! Ha! Ha ha." Which is to say: thank you Jeph, for creating such an amazing cast of true-to-life characters we can pin our neuroses to.
