BookBeard

Nope, he says it's biased against computers. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1383

Ursus Ridens

Nah, you need a secret menu that you don't tell your lovers (if any). Or a set of hand signals (for when the music's loud). Or a cowbell. Or a set of handbells -- you know, the signal for a large caramel mocha latte is Bach's Toccata, Adagio, and Fugue in C Major BWV 564. And so on.

Paul Johnson

Newest AI playing chess are getting bad. Does Pintsize play chess? https://www.popsci.com/technology/ai-chess-cheat/#:~:text=A%20new%20study%20suggests%20reasoning%20models%20from%20DeepSeek,game%20files%20in%20their%20favor.%20Credit%3A%20Deposit%20Photos

BookBeard

Bad example, the submacopter was clearly a work of genius.

Lucas Werkmeister

I doubt it's even in the top ten lol remember the Submacopter?

awgiedawgie

This may be the stupidest idea anyone at CoD has ever had.

Stewart MacWilliam

*slow clap again*

Nicolas Dao-Phan

The Pintsize : [REDACTED]

enchantedsleeper

AND she could achieve her superhero dreams!

Hugh Eckert

Ayo would look *fine* in the one Emily designed. Dang.

BookBeard

That checks out, she did used to work there. At least she hasn't suggested "venti boy". Yet. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=5172

BookBeard

"... and he wants a drink!"

BookBeard

Nah, their ship name would actually be "oh dear god, what have we done".

legobil

It is well known that Elliot is a marshmallow.

Rob Wright

The Starbucks sickness RUN

Stewart MacWilliam

*slow clap*

Stephen Wells

Ayonh Flux.

Miyaa

So I know outside the 🇺🇸 they are rechristening the Americano as the Canadiano. Maybe it could be called the Emmett in QC because like Emmett they are shy, awkward but also causes chaos where they go and now at least prefers black.

allanfranta

Solomon, more of "one who judges" then "one who comments". Or is it whom?

Solomon Garland

Ah, a quintuplet short boy! Clearly you’re a commenter of culture

Solomon Garland

Choosing to believe they don’t have drizzles, so… syrups: sticky, spicy (cinnamon), squirrel (hazelnut) (not nutty cause that means almond milk), cool (mint). Boy refers to coffee types: flat (flat white), frothy (cappuccino), burger (americano), short (espresso), milky, and chocolate. For drinks with milk, the modifiers are skinny, oaty, soy, and nutty. So if someone orders a cappuccino with oat milk and cinnamon syrup, that’s a spicy oaty foamyboy, which can subsequently be made fluffy. Extra shots could be twin, triplet, etc boys. Tea is referred to based on what Bubbles pictures when she sniffs it, so we can have Hanners asking Dora if they can restock on sexy unicorn and friendly giraffe soon

Stewart MacWilliam

Good lord there are a lot of great characters in this comic! Now I can't wait for Ayo and Anh to interact. (So if we ship *them* will they be "Anhyo"?)

allanfranta

4 shots espresso, black and bitter like my heart.

David Paul

Kronk is the absolute best 😂

MayLaBelle

@Melissa they're quoting a Spongebob episode https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1xC-5vw3vI

Melissa Wilson

No good will come of this & I am here for *ALL* of it!

Steve DeGroof

I was imagining Ayo shouting, "Got a big fluffy sticky local boy!"

Melissa Wilson

Aw, c’mon, Ben! You know you’ll love it in here! The water’s warm & we’re steeping in mirth!

Melissa Wilson

Translation, please?

Melissa Wilson

& there will be DOOM!

Melissa Wilson

@Brian, from what I understand, that may depend upon whether the Waffle House will serve one’s kind.

BookBeard

A tall grim boy with a shot of "ketchup". https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=5100

Opus the Poet

Caramel drizzle would be sticky on top.

Melissa Wilson

Was there ever any doubt?

Melissa Wilson

Nice!

Opus the Poet

@bookwyrm1216 there used to be a place here in Garland where you could get cayenne sprinkled on your cocoa, but they didn't have code words for it, just order cayenne on it.

Melissa Wilson

As a native Ohioan, that whole moment in slang makes me sad.

Melissa Wilson

Wow… power move going all ad identitatem. We are humbled before your brilliance!

Opus the Poet

But the wording can't be confused with a different order. It's not quicker it's less likely to go wrong.

Melissa Wilson

Thanks, Ralph! I came here just for that & I’m so glad someone beat me to it!

Melissa Wilson

Is there any easier way to look happy all the time, without any side effects?

Opus the Poet

I feel like the Deacon at a revival meeting translating the preacher speaking in tongues. Only this actually makes sense to me.

Melissa Wilson

Sold!

Melissa Wilson

Much as I crave some next-level linguistic lunacy, I think I might appreciate that expression even more!

Melissa Wilson

In that shirt, I always thought he was being ironical.

Chocolate Stickyboy, no fluff

Chocolate boy, no nuts

Chocolate Stickyboy, no fluff

Sticky American with fluff

Pete Jordan

If you do this thing, Dora *will* kill you. Extra shot, and send your smoking remains to the Starbucks round the corner.

Opus the Poet

Picard and Darmok...

Graydon Armstrong

“The procrastinating student, his assignment due in the morning” is a triple shot.

Stephen Wells

Darmok and Salad :)

legobil

What is a hot chocolate then?

legobil

Woooo! Kinky kinks! Wait.

Steve DeGroof

Cue Elliott entering the shop to get a 24oz Americano with whipped cream and caramel. 😬

Dean Reilly

Yes, they just have spider milk.

Stephen Wells

Winslow likes to look at the unparseable pidgins outside the window.

Ava Foxfort

Decaf is sleepy right? So my order is a sleepy chocolate oatyboy no fluff.

Blair Finkmoore

I absolutely hate all of this thought process

Ísabel Pirsic

Pity they don’t serve hammered banana or carrot abominations anymore

Jason Zions

Radio Christmas! (Tuna down [on toast]. no lettuce [noel])

Jason Zions

Almond milk mocha with caramel syrup, whipped cream. This isn't quite right; how can you distinguish between "caramel syrup in the drink" and "caramel drizzle over the top". The caramel *sauce* is what's sticky; caramel syrup is as sticky as any other syrup and is thus not uniquely sticky. Caramel syrup tastes like cooked sugar; not burned, but cooked. A sticky chocolate fluffy nuttyboy should be an almond milk mocha with whipped cream and a caramel drizzle; a cooked chocofluffynuttyboy is almond milk mocha, shot of caramel syrup, whipped cream. Cocoboy? Coconut milk. Soyboy? Same meaning it's always had, lol.

Frank Wales

Temba, his white flat

Munk33 Magic

I am kinda scared that I think I already speak that dialect. Jeph are you saying you want a hot chocolate on almond with whipped cream and syrup or am I completely imagining things?

Joseph Bonnar

You called, SilverbackRon? Whom do you wish me to smite?

Bagge

"Sugar and spice and everything nice... AND CHEMICAL X!"

Bagge

So many choices. Boyces.

Todd Ellner

Eggs on horseback. Adam and Eve on a raft, wrecked. Mug of murk and a life preserver. Everything old is new again.

Graydon Armstrong

Insert Darmok and Jalad meme.

David Pablo Cohn

Wouldn't be able to stay away!

enchantedsleeper

@William OMG, samesies!

enchantedsleeper

Wait til Ayo finds out that they could have had badass uniforms...

Opus the Poet

Black coffee.

Opus the Poet

Caramel hazelnut latte with whipped cream.

William Cole

As usual.

Veronica Jane

@Bill Every example I am looking at online is the same length as the term it's replacing if not longer

Bill Silvia

If you don't have any digital technology and you have a lot of customers, saying two words instead of five makes a big difference. Though in the modern era, most of these abbreviations are numbers.

Bill Silvia

Testing, I don't think you can.

Bill Silvia

Maybe girls are cold and boys are hot? (Would match most common patterns of temperature regulation.)

Bill Silvia

Grown up bean boy coming up!

Bill Silvia

Not after that burrito place got shut down, at least.

Brittany Huckey

I read it as logo, and was confused. Then my reading comprehension kicked in. I'm back on track

Charles Hirst

Putting the punctuation inside or outside the quotes or brackets, varies from country to country. Styles can be colourful or colorful. [I do the odd bit of preafrooding\\\\\\\\\\\\proofreading - how do you do strikethrough font in these comments?].

Ailadi

It’s equal parts unparseable pidgin, confusion, and Bookbeard.

Erik Ordway

‘Put a ring on it’ to add pineapple.

Luke Meyers

More of an argot than a pidgin. Kinda surprised Hanners would mix those up, tbh. Though "pidgin" is a funnier and more familiar word.

Andrew

Might as well be another language :) https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3641

Ben R

I am commenting without reading any of the other comments. I'm afraid to.

Sean Kinlin

Hey, that sounds good, Hanners. I'll have one unparseable pidgin, hold the root.

Thunder

I was checking to see if anyone else did. I'm glad.

Yonatan Zunger

Pablo!! You're here too!

djellafine

Pig in a blanket!

djellafine

But Elliot is so soft on the inside

David Pablo Cohn

Even worse, sometimes it becomes meta-evolution where, like Cockney slang, it has evolved mechanisms that allow it to evolve at almost unfollowable speeds. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhyming_slang)

Michael Steamweed

As any linguistician can tell you, any prescriptivist attempt to create the language is going to be resisted. Examples: $tarbuxx and Wawful Hause.

BookBeard

Hanners: "*sigh* that'll be one 'usual' for Melon..."

Michael Steamweed

HR is Dora. Getting her involved will either result in "that facial expression" or the linguistic lunacy getting worse. Could go either way.

Donna Flint

Having grown up in the middle of nowhere without a chain restaurant to be had, I can vouch for the claim to stave off boredom or to be funny.

Michael Steamweed

We appreciate your comedic commitment with your handle. :)

Michael Steamweed

"The sticky milky fluffy nuttyboy is Sven."

Michael Steamweed

And now Dora _really_ wants to talk to you.

Michael Steamweed

When I was a waiter in Texas (lo, last century), we used the terms "86" (for none or we're out), "burn it" (for well-done), "in the weeds" (for being overwhelmed), and "java" or "joe" (for coffee). Everything else was plaintext English.

Aditya Rameshan

We're going to get a cutaway scene now of Penelope and pizza girl, arm wrestling for the right of being the only blonde with a ponytail in all of North Hampton, at Will's bar, with Jimbo as a referee. (Jeph, if you actually do this, thanks in advance 🤣🤣🤣)

Ashbury Haight

Extra shingles with a shimmy and a squeeze, light axle grease, make it cry, burn it, and let it swim

Brian Yaras

Wait til you see how the Waffle House wait staff puts in an order. It'll make you pop a stitch.

BobC

When I was a kid growing up in New Jersey, diners had their own "diner speak" that was a joy to behold. While most diners had the order shouted through the kitchen pass-thru from behind the counter, some orders were bellowed from the table the moment the order was complete. Those were the ones us kids liked most! I have a vague childhood memory of visiting one in Manhattan that had the classic checkerboard tile floor, with red vinyl on the counter stools and booth benches. I have no idea if the food was any good, but it got devoured as part of the overall experience. Edit: Of course, Wikipedia knows all about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diner_lingo I don't remember much beyond the egg-related terms.

Matthew Delahaye

Thousand island latte is the forbidden latte

Summer

I want an oolong stirred with a harpoon and extra spider legs.

William Cole

If Willow had gotten hired, this comic could be titled Werewolf Style.

William Cole

Ayo is just looking for someone to rub her the right way.

William Cole

And I am Plain Bitter Boy.

William Cole

I knew which comic this would be without clicking.

Ailadi

This would be us 😂. Need a flow chart with term crosswalks kthx

William Cole

Coincidence … or MORE?

alphanor

or maybe a big pinch of jalapeno powder?

Ailadi

We like the flip of Ayo’s relaxed confidence and Hanners’ “aaaaagh!” in this one. Nice pivot from the earlier strips.

Rich Holmes

And Jimbo. <DRAMATIC MUSIC STING>

Sean Kinlin

Fortunately, someone has posted it online: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=587612967925816&id=115919138428537&set=a.568359173184529

BookBeard

It's true, she is. https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=5152

Simon Green

I'll have an all natural super sweet furry hatter, Arnie-sized.

BookBeard

If you want your coffee served by Winslow, you have to order a "Deluxe Regular Boy". https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3541

Doc Gumby

There was. She spoke fluent Sass.

Ailadi

Wait what you did is “wrong”? 🤔

BookBeard

Honestly, I think it's just boredom. When you work in a diner in the middle of nowhere that serves the same twenty people every single day you're gonna start making up funny names for toast just to stave off the madness.

Madeline Hunter

I'm assuming it was a speed thing, to get food out fast, in the heyday of diners as pre-chain fast food

schmod

Yeah, that's fair. It's Northhampton, so the number is probably in the dozens.

BookBeard

"Oh my apologies, I didn't realize you only sold fluffy milky boys here. Is there by any chance a place nearby that sells coffee?"

Ailadi

We’re from the US and still have no clue either. But it’s a big country 🤷🏻‍♀️

SilverbackRon

It has been a hot minute since I read a Don Martin comic. (I don't know the punch line to the one you reference)

SilverbackRon

I was rather fond of Penelope. Take note, since she has been absent from the comic, you know who else hasn't shown up? Pizza Girl.

Yonatan Zunger

We laugh but this is how linguistic evolution happens

Yonatan Zunger

You mean a fluffy, sticky, nutty chocolate boi?

BookBeard

What, you think they let just *anyone* wear those shirts? https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3437

Steve McSheffrey

I've yet to warm to Ayo so of course she'd show up when I wished for a break from Anh...

SilverbackRon

HAHAHA, priceless! (okay, what was it before?

SilverbackRon

ohmygod

SilverbackRon

I agree! Gendering them all as male just somehow rubs me the wrong way.

David Durant

Penny (I'm safe to say that, she's not here) is the closest CoD has to HR. Any excuse to see how she and Will are doing is good for me.

Carrie

I'll have a quad speed run on ice. 🤓

bookwyrm1216

Would that be a hot cocoa? Make mine spicy! (Add cinnamon)

Carrie

OMW so much laughter it made my dog look at me. Thank you Jeph!

Anthony Gaglianese

I am now convinced this is where Jeph came up with her name.

Veronica Jane

I've honestly never understood the whole "American diners having weird names for orders" thing I'm always seeing in movies

Noise

"Sticky chocolate fluffy nuttyboy?" Oh, you mean PHIL...

Joshua O'Madadhain

(and yes, I am aware that I'm my recap above I put the punctuation that's not part of the quoted phrase outside the quotes. After N years of software engineering, the 'correct' way just seems wrong. 🤪)

Rich Holmes

https://store.wondermark.com/collections/stickers/products/unparseable-symbols-sticker-3-5-circle (spelled without the 'e')

Chocolate Stickyboy, no fluff

She's gonna have at least one option.

Aditya Rameshan

You'd think Penelope or Hanners would've implemented an HR person by now, after all that 😂

Bill Silvia

There's no way Dora carries that many varieties of milk though.

Sean Kinlin

If you're willing to share, what was the other?

Mat

MY SPINACH PUFFS!

Bill Silvia

Nutty boys, soy boys, coco boys, and oat boys?

Wood

OINK AND CACKLES !

Joshua O'Madadhain

Missing quote mark on Hanners' line in panel 3. I assume it's intended to be [So...a mocha would be a "chocolate boy". Whipped cream would be "make him fluffy".] (that is, missing quote before 'make').

Joseph Bonnar

I just came in for a large coffee! HELP!

Doc Gumby

I insist on fluffy chocolate girls as well!

Sora

Ay, yo...?

Rich Holmes

This is the second thing I've read this evening with the word "unparseable" in it.

voyager-ngc5195

"Welcome to Crashout Coffee, can I interest you in our Sigma Ohio blend? It comes with your choice of rizz, skibidi, or gyatt!"

Grace Kieser

Elliot is pretty jacked, but maybe Clinton is around!

Grace Kieser

Faye used their code of ethics as toilet paper, and Dora had to be blackmailed into hiring an assistant manager. My guess is there's no HR.

Magic Chopstick Games

It me, flat white boy 😑👍

Chocolate Stickyboy, no fluff

Need to know what they'll call non dairy milks. Immediately.

Grace Kieser

Or hazelnut syrup instead of almond milk

Ralph

Diner talk! Adam and Eve on a raft and wreck 'em!

Sean Kinlin

Yes, and it was calculated to drive you MAD.

Rich Holmes

ABSOLUTELY NO ACTUAL BLOOD PACKS HERE HA HA HAVE A GOOD DAY SIR SORRY WE'RE CLOSED NOW

Grace Kieser

Grill fried with mustard

Tim Illingworth

Someone spends too much time in Waffle House...

Sean Kinlin

I was certainly thinking, "careful talking about chocolate people."

Captain Button

You ninja'd me!

Chocolate Stickyboy, no fluff

Changing my name to Chocolate Sticky boy, BRB.

Jon

Ayo, honey, I’m pretty sure you’re just inordinately horny 😅🤣

Erik Ordway

I am not sure I want to know what an Animal Style latte would be.

Alcaria Swain

I need this to cement into the fiction. Honestly, Ayo has been a great addition to the cast

Peter McDevitt

Three oinkers wearing pants; plate of hot air; basket of grandmas' breakfast & change the bull to a gill- GOT IT!

Amanda Hinkle

A caramel mocha latte made with almond milk topped with whipped cream?

ValdVin

Winslow can be your poster child. He's sweet and wholesome enough to make this work, especially the fluffyboy.

Sean Kinlin

Well, they must already have a lingo; they don't literally sell blood packs, right? It's just a funky name for something normal... ... right?

Aditya Rameshan

If coffee of doom has an HR, now might be the time to get them involved, before someone says the wrong thing to the wrong person 🤣🤣🤣

Andrew

Go to the bakery for a soft boy

Brendan Luster

when Faye worked there it felt like there was a lingo...

Andrew Mitchell

Hanner's face. 😭😭😭

Sean Kinlin

Reminds me of a Don Martin comic. "Where's the men's room, Mac? Gotta go, and no foolin'. "

Wynn Donivan

They are ideas, certainly....

Tannerbot

Hanners fell in quiiiiick

J.C. Jones

As a customer, I would want to adopt this lingo too.

orangejuicenut

I’ll take a triple bossy deluxe 4 by 4 animal style
