*tilts hand* While I get what you mean, Hanners gained a lot of perspective on a lot of things during her time travelling. So I don't think it's fair to assume she's just an insulated rich kid in her outlook. But I suspect it will never be made 100% clear exactly how much money Hanners has or how she uses it. (With that said, remember that Hanners said she didn't have enough money to buy Coffee of Doom. "A few million" is definitely coffee shop-buying money).

Hanners is clearly okay for cash, and her assumptions may have been formed by her mother. And remember that ideas about wealth are always terribly, terribly subjective and relative. “Yes, I dumped all those embarrassing investments my mother tried to give me. But of course I kept that trust fund. I have to eat and pay the rent, after all. It’s not much — just a few million.” From her point of view, dropping a couple of thousand on a nice dress for a special occasion may not feel at all strange. It’s not something you do every day, obviously, but money is there for using.

Another possibility: You know who else is in Hanners' orbit and has access to a lot of money? Marigold :D Maybe they went shopping together as Hanners needed a wedding dress and Marigold grumped along (or May prodded her out of the house) or maybe Marigold needed something new of her own, and she paid because she could and wanted to do something nice for Hanners.

It's mysterious because Hanners did have enough to go on a round-the-world travelling spree at a moment's notice, and I doubt she was earning anything at the time because she was making herself "useful", not charging for her work. She cut off her own access to her mother's investments but maybe she has some of her own. However, I'm stuck on the part where people think it would be in-character for Hanners to casually spend thousands of dollars on a dress. I think she would see that as wasteful. She would buy good-quality clothes, and they probably need to be right in a sensory way, but there's a difference between that and spending thousands of dollars on something (marked down or not).

Also, I just have to say it: All the different, excellently drawn hand positions in this strip really stands out to me as a great example of just how much Jeph's skills as an artist have come So so far and improved in such a major way. It's pretty undeniably cool to see, especially if you've been following along for much of it. Related to that, and this might be a little weird, but sometimes when my students - all new, budding artists who have only just begun - are telling themselves they'll never be a "good" artist, feeling like they'll just never improve, sometimes I'll show them the first round of QC comics before then showing them some of the most recent ones. (And sometimes I'll also throw in some scattered "in-between" strips to give them a sense of what that progression looked like.) Folks are Always really impressed, and it helps me show them that they already Are "real" artists even if they don't feel like it yet, but also that with time - an often frustrating amount of it - and hard work and practice and dedication, they can and Will become whatever kind of artist they want to be, whatever it means to them to be a "real" or "good" artist. :) Again, I know that this all might seem a little weird but hey, it works! I'm not exaggerating when I say that everyone is ALWAYS so so impressed. So a thank you to Jeph, for helping inspire so many beginner artists out there, all who feel like they'll just never get the hang of it. But we all already know that they absolutely will 😊

When you pay bespoke designer prices, one thing you’re buying is exclusivity. If someone else can buy the same label cheap on the high street, you were sold the thing under false pretences. Presumably, Evangeline Dubonnet either has a small pret à porter line to make some extra cash off her name, or quietly lets the occasional uncollected bespoke piece go to specialised retail outlets to make something back when a customer unexpectedly bails. Hanners, of course, enjoys special authorial benefits and walked into exactly the right outlet shop at exactly the right moment. She may also be unworldly and rich enough to pick up a $4,000 dress, marked down from $10,000, because it looks nice and 60% off is obviously a bargain.
