There are a few times I've laid it out more explicitly, like in the moonrain chapter: > “Yeah, First-Circle, Second-Circle and so on. From a bird's eye view, the floors of the tower would be circles, right? And there are twelve: three circles of magic for non-Speakers, three after the First-Word, three after the Second-Word, and three after the Third-Word. Makes sense, right?” Basically, the first three levels of aura or magic (circles) are accessible without Speaking. Then the 3-6 levels require the First-Word 7-9 Second-Word and 10-12 Third-Word I think it might be a good idea to go back and emphasis it more in early chapters also. Sorry for the confusion!

Sean

I'm very confused by the third word stuff. The way I initially remember the words being introduced sounded like they were a kind of progression system. I was thinking she knew 'all the words' which meant she could go to third, and then fourth, fifth, sixth... up to Tenth where she would be something like... This is a silly example but like Super Saiyan God. Temporarily divine until she released the word.

Malir Blackspear

Have reread it like four times now out of a desire to think about truths that do not exist to help people.

This chapter has a surprising amount of Things to think about.

Edward Ravenbear

While I understand that point. For a normal Lord-Prospect, she is far from normal and done things to benefit the Empire no one else can. That is why I say it is insulting. If the only thing someone has to to do is wait 5 years keeping thier nose clean and tow the party line to become a lord, it is then insulting to those who do truly great things and still have to sit behind they rabble just so the rabble will not get thier tiny little feelings hurt. If she was a Demon then I think it would be a whole other story. Look at Marcus Cassius Scaeva he was the lowest of the low in the 8th Legion. Barely above cannon fodder. After one battle were he did some truly impressive things he went from the very bottom to Centurion, something that on average took 10 to 20 years to achieve. I hope you do not take this as a dis of your story. It is not, far from it. When I read a story I truly like I try to feel what MC feels etc. Really immerse myself in the MC and story. And if this was me I would be pissed. Thinking what else do I need to do to get some respect, bring the dead back it life, water to wine, make food fall from the sky? I know she is carefree and modest, that said everyone wants respect for what they do. All they do is keep throwing more dampers on what she can and can't do. In effect a gilded cage.

I had a few moments of being horrified of Amelia's potential reaction to realizing her involvement, right up until I remembered that point you brought up. It was the previous Lord who set the dominos up, all she did was make them fall a little earlier. If you think back, they've been burning wood for heat during Winter, which was rapidly approaching. The difference between the fire happening now, and happening a few months into Winter is Amelia and co. being there to help with the aftermath. Framed appropriately, without taking on more guilt than need be, it's more of a neutral event. As stated in previous chapters, people were very freshly healthy enough to skedaddle and the weather not quite bad enough to cause them to freeze during their escape. I suppose the only thing that changed was whether she was tangentially the cause of a fire or directly, though through secondary effects. When you go to start up machinery, for industrial processes, you absolutely are supposed to do cursory checks. The culpability remains shared.

Saint Amelia! I could totally see this backfiring in the politicians eyes, as Amelia would have her Title of Saint to lean on as she heals anyone and everyone she feels like… ( feel free to steal that idea Keene ;P )

Bast

The south would make sense as a travel destination. They are interested because of Suijin, and seem to be politically on the side of the North. A bit of appeasing via the Amelia treatment (TM) will probably do a lot with pushing the political agenda

Amazing chapter, thank you! I love how realistic these plot lines are. Unintended side effects from good actions in this case. The complexity and realism of your characters and plot lines make this one of the best stories I’ve ever read. Along with your awesome world building of course! It makes this fantasy world feel like a real place with real people with real motivations, not just a backdrop built around the main characters. I find that this level of writing is hard to find, both in online formats and published novels. I appreciate your hard work!

I am guessing Yiannis. Something at the back of my mind says that location was important. Also! Thanks for the chapter. its an interesting thought that Amelia's healing and cleaning has unintended consequences. Another opportunity for her to mature.

Arkus86

Another argument is, as was noted repeatedly, the slums were a huge fire hazard regardless, a disaster waiting to happen. In that, it is fortunate it happened while she was there. If it had happened any other time, and it *would* have happened, sooner or later, the consequences could have been far worse.

SleepyKitten

Amazing chapter ^^, I really liked the revelation that she was potentially the cause of the fire. And serena swearing to never tell her was very sweet. It could be a serious issue for amelia due to her very kind personality. To be responsible for so much death would be a massive burden on her psyche. Though I feel like such a potential plot point for drama will be used eventually.

Boris

Nice chapter. That tea certainly fit the orbital bombardment Serena received xD whether she went -> wherever You want ~her~ to bind her to the Empire every-mysterious Western Overlord -> ever

Keene

My understanding is the Lords of the East have to play a careful balancing act with their own internal politics and the greater politics of the Empire and beyond. There are consequences for their actions, and the process to graduate from a Lord-Prospect to a Lord is more than just "Do one amazing thing" -> There is an expectation of showing good character and actions over a long period of time.

Edward Ravenbear

Ok, this is really bothering me. Why is she not made into a full Lord by now? She sure as hell has done enough to earn it. And this hush hush about what she did when the cat is out of the bag makes not logical sense. Honestly I think they are being very insulting to her and she is to navie to see it.

Keene

Fixed, thank you <3

Theory on the Third Word "working differently": Maybe those words are like unclaimed divine domains? That way, the person themselves would become partially divine themselves, which would make sense with the Titanic forms Amelia mentioned in some previous chapter

Kasper Lynderup Jensen

She is at most at fault for one building burning down. Where the fire startet. The rest is poor city planning and terrible fire safety. She even commented on it. I don't know if she would see it like that, but while at first glance she may seem like the type to put the world on her shoulders, I don't think she actually is. She wants to help, but don't seem to be on a mission to never rest before everyone have been helped.

Aldous Russell

Time for the swimsuit episode!

Puppy Piranha Forever

Just dawned on me Amelia‘s cleaning ability might also play a role in how fast the fire broke out. I can easily see her cleaning ability, removing the ash used to bank a fire, to possibly removing rusty parts from metal fire boxes, thus exposing the surroundings to open flames. This would cause multiple fires simultaneously to flare up in the huge fire hazard that the slums were.

Bast

Thanks for the chapter! The source of the fire being Amelia's cleaning is something that would clearly give her a lot of grief, but objectively it's something that would have happened sooner rather than later. Both the layout and cheap-and-more-dangerous means of warming and light mean much higher risks of starting fires. Look at how often London burned down. That said, we don't even know if Amelia was the cause here. It's just not proveable nor disprovable. But it is ammunition for anyone wanting to attack her.

Cormac

Amelia has made in very plain that she has no connection to the human church. If she doesn't do the same with the demon church, her name and status as a saint would be used as a tool by Cascadia in international relations. Which I don't think she would want. So she should tell this cardinal to shove the sainthood up his arse.

Thanks for the chap, also minor typo missing quotation mark. “There is something else,” Greatlord Oshiro said, producing two letters. There will be an award ceremony for those who risked their lives or otherwise contributed greatly to putting out the fire. I’m sure it shouldn’t be surprising for either of you to find out you’ll be awarded. Here.” He passed the letters over, and after seeing his affirmative nod, Serena opened hers and read it.

Garrett Cannon

OMG this is everything i wanted Keene great job. I cant wait to see what u write next. I would love to watch amelia struggle with "mist walking" in the shimmer maybe give us more of the super cool big brother vibes of lord guardian teaching her. I also hope Katelynn joins them somehow with maybe a journey to fight some strong demons in the west.
