I know this is a "What if" scenario, but I strongly think this should happen in the canon storyline. It's really hard to let go of childhood friends (though that's not always true).

It's not just that Mike made a different decision. In this storyline, he had time to think. You can see he's more uncomfortable than guilted by everything she says here, and it's because he gave himself the time to gain perspective.
