Getting a hobby has its benefits. It's true, and I live by it. But that isn't my point. Mike seems convinced that his commitment to Sandy will make him happy, but it doesn't, and he refuses to tell either his friends or himself why he's still sad. He could learn to suppress his feelings for Lucy with a good hobby. Daisy is right. But Daisy makes it sound like sadness is just a distraction that being busy can shoo away. Suppression is more nuanced than that. She essentially said so directly to Mike last chapter. Mike needs self-reflection if he's going to be happy, and it'll take much more than just retaining his long-distance relationship. But all this taken at once is maybe too much to weigh on a teenager's mind.

I have found that artistic pursuits are an incredible help for depression and anxiety. There's lots of literature on this. Putting your energy into a hobby isn't just a distraction, it can really help you to redirect your emotions.

It does help some people not ruminate by keeping busy. There's a middle ground between ignoring your emotions and losing yourself in them, and this is one way to do it. Maybe he shouldn't be quite as extreme as Daisy, though.

Mike and Daisy both know that you can't control your emotions, only your reactions to them. So what's all this talk? Too busy to be sad? Too engaged to be sad? Mike can't cope with things now (Paulo knows it), and Daisy isn't helping him.
