I dont think people quite get that, just as Lucy is still suffering from things that happened to her in literal pre-school, Mike is suffering from a relationship that started in 3rd grade. He has been trying to keep it because he genuinely loved her, or at least his memories of her, and had already been conditioned to accept any and all treatment regardless of how bad it is. Downplaying Sandy's importance because of her being his 3rd grade crush misses the point.
