The Walrus Transcendent

It's not even about modernity, it's imo about the world (and the social contract) falling apart. Commerce drying up; the holders of power leveraging it harder against the populace; wealth extraction increasing even as the actual wealth to be extracted lessens; social safety nets (institutional or communal) fraying and coming undone. I guarantee that some rando from current day Globalsouthistan who can remember things being better and people having more of everything -from appliances to a future-, either personally or secondhand from their parents, would very much agree with Aiki.

I forgot to respond to this, thanks! Yeah, it's really easy to think of everything from the point of view of a modern person... but you really have to think beyond that for a story like this. It's also very easy to have people just *agree* with bringing things closer to modernity by default, but you really have to be careful with that.

Neat portrayal of differing worldviews. John seems to be a middle or upper middle class Westerner; someone who's experienced, at most, economic violence, but has been, by and large, safe throughout his life. Mewanwhile, Aiki's probably witnessed societal collapse as he grew up, between the invasion and perhaps Yuki's shenanigans. He's seen that, to paraphrase a Cow and Chicken episode, when people get hungry and pie-faced enough, they will clobber one-another with the cheese instead of divvying it up and eating it, so giving everyone a cheese lobber could only lead to tragedy. He also might not trust himself to hope for a better future.
