Behind the Scenes: Two repairs on the Cube

I took care of a couple small issues the Cube had and filmed the process. Somewhat badly. I am not the best at this! But now the car is relatively trustworthy. Not that it really needs to be for my purposes but I am glad to have it sorted. You might also notice it now has new tires... I haven't put the wheel covers on yet since I'm thinking that'll be a nice thing to include in the next Cube video. It could use a lot of spiffening up.
Oh and now I know for sure that (at least) the front left wheel bearing is bad. That position had the baldest, gnarliest tire and I thought there was a chance the noise I was hearing was just from the tire. Alas with new tires the noise is much quieter but it's still there. I'll look into how much of a pain replacing wheel bearings will be on this car, and if it seems like something I can handle myself I might make some content out of it.

I was able to change the starter in my '95 Dodge Avenger in the parking lot of a Canadian Tire in about 10 minutes, through the top. I had no idea at the time how rare of a privilege that was...

I really appreciate your desire and increasing competence on working on the vehicle. Working under a vehicle on a lift is fraught with peril. If you're alone, with no one to hear a catastrophe occurring, I'd advise some sort of fail safe monitoring system that will call 911 or turn on a klaxon or whatever if you don't interact with it in a set period of time. Looking forward to the next improvement to the Cube!

Your patter while tussling with that starter sounded almost exactly like the stuff I mutter about when doing repairs, whether on cars or household stuff. I rarely do any auto repair these days, no more complicated than changing a battery. Your video reminded of the time back in the 90s when I had to replace a starter in an S-10 Blazer. Tried it from above at first and there was no way I could figure to get it out, so I was forced to do it from below. This was in the winter in MN and I didn't have a garage and the car was parked outside in a foot or so of snow. Had to scoop that away just to be able to get under the car--didn't have a lift, jackstands or even ramps to raise it. Removing it involved several steps, something like "pull it out 1 inch, twist it 20 degrees clockwise, angle it up 40 degrees go through these hoses, those hoses & whatnot." All determined by trial & error as was the installation of the new one. I did get quite the sense of accomplishment when it was done however.

My nephew wanted to work on his car, and his mom asked us to buy him a socket set for his birthday, which we did, and she was happy and he was happy. And all I could think about is how that socket set doesn't begin to provide him with every adapter, extension, offset, swivel, wobble, and gimmick he'll end up owning if he's still doing this in 3 years 🤣
