I half agree. Scarlett would prefer it - loot most often affects the guild halls economic capability or defensive capability. But John's personal ability to defend the guild hall has - until now - far outstripped the ability of the guild halls defenses. It would have made more sense to gain levels to defend the guildhall personally. But that changes at the end game - he now faces opponents below him who would take advantage of his absence (like Hypercrush or Justinian) or those far above him who require great planning to battle - preferably away from the guildhall (like Aztec Vulture Man or Tiamat). In both cases John would want the guild hall to be able to handle the little stuff while he handles the big stuff.

The genius squid - if they are like real squids, would have come about during the cretaceous era - although if they are an offshoot of cephalopods that later evolved to be squid like after mana disappeared they could have arrived anywhere between the Cambrian and cretaceous. I like placing the rise of the lorylim in the midst of the Silurian - that is when fungus and insects made their steps into and took over the land - until the rise of plants started competing with the fungi. It was also when stronger roots evolved with which to carve magic onto the bedrock. The end extinction is worth looking at too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silurian-Devonian_Terrestrial_Revolution

I feel like John should value loot more - enough of the things on the loot tables have been permanent (if minor) guild hall upgrades, that loot should be treated as something that can provide permanent progression, not as irrelevant gear
