After several hours, interrupted by their half-hourly lewdness breaks, they did finally come across signs of their target. Colourful, arm-sized feathers had been left on the ground. Slithering marks were soon found as well. After that, it was an easy tracking exercise.
The jungle changed as they followed. The space between the trees became larger, the branches hung lower, and the ground turned practically sandy. Some heat source below the ground made heat rise into the already hot jungle. The softness of the ground only made the slither marks easier to track.
They found the serpent coiled up in a depression in the ground. It was every bit as titanic as the feathers had implied. From mouth to tip, it was several dozen metres long and at its thickest over one metre wide. More impressive than its size, John found its appearance.
Feathers were tightly pressed against its body like the short fur of a weasel. Only the tips were truly visible, whose strong reds, greens and blues were heavily contrasted by the rare bit of black and grey. “Interesting,” John said aloud. “Makes me wonder if it’s afflicted by the Soul-Mass-Theory.”
“The what now?” Nahoa asked.
“It’s a magical theory that seems pretty solid,” John explained to her. “Humans are the only species that actively produces Faith, which in turn is the power that allows Natural Barriers to spawn and gods to ascend. If any of these Faith-spawned entities are removed from humans for too long, it’s typically observed that they gradually diminish in power and intellect, until they become too feeble to keep going.”
“Sounds flawed.” Nahoa gestured around. “Kingdoms are magic entirely, so why do they not crumble in their entirety?”
“That is a mystery, isn’t it?” John asked. “Kingdoms usually have humans on them and a lot of them reconnect with Earth at times. Perhaps that’s enough to recharge?”
“Alternatively, the theory is flawed.”
“Entirely possible,” John admitted. He had only read it and the material had been full of readings that he had no idea how to interpret properly. Measuring the arcane was a science he did not even have a passing interest in, in large part because he personally subscribed to a more esoteric understanding of magic. That was to say that he believed that magic would rewrite its rules in large and small ways if and when it was ever too close to being understood.
“So, how do ya wanna do this?” Rave asked.
“Hmm… traditionally the supreme ruler slays the beast for his spouse.” Nahoa gave John an expectant glance.
“Must it be slain?” John asked.
“Feeling squeamish?”
“Yes and no,” the Gamer rubbed his chin, his eyes meeting those of the feathered serpent. It had long since spotted them. Instincts kept it confident and cautious. “Actually, the question is moot. The Adventure Quest said ‘Slay’ not ‘Defeat’, so the choice is made.”
“I’d still like to know if you’re so against killing it,” Nahoa coaxed him.
“I have no moral qualms about killing animals. I eat meat every day and I would be willing to personally hunt and slaughter them if that were the price for it.” Long stretches prepared the Gamer of the fight that was about to happen. “At the same time, if I am not going to eat it, I don’t think I should kill anything that’s not annoying the hell out of me. Alas, if the Lady wants me to slay it…”
“Don’t give me hope you will convert to the one true path,” Moira chided him.
John chuckled and took long steps forwards. With every stride, the feathered serpent stirred a little more from its comfortable sand bed. Plumage shivered, feathers rising around its head as a colourful crest. Winds picked up from nowhere, blowing sand into John’s face. The grains broke against Particle Skin, making the hostile intention clear.
The boa struck, its enormous jaw opening wide enough to swallow John whole. ‘Quick and painless,’ he thought and teleported to the side. Silver light cascaded from the tips of three fingers, radiant threads turning into one slicing string of arcane energy. Adjusting the position of his thumb caused the beam to swing down like the executioner’s axe.
The head fell into the sand first, immediately claimed by gravity. The body remained upright for a split second longer, carried by remaining muscle twitches and momentum. Once they failed, the rest of the feathered serpent fell as well.
‘That does make it better,’ John thought.
“Oh, I just feel like a happy little girl at the bazaar!” Nahoa chirped and danced towards the corpse. Her feet tapped through the blood-soaked sand without a care. The only concern she had for the ichor was it getting on her prize. “Only one feather, right?”
“No, we can take more,” John said.
“But don’t you only have 2 Item Slots? Sorry if that is silly, I am just a dumb bim-bo!”

She picked them out, one after another. The quills were often bloody, as could be expected when ripped from still warm flesh. “So, how does it work?”
“The Inventory system can be a bit odd,” John told her. “Basically, if we can summarize it to a ‘unit’ then we can take many more along. All we need for that…” His hand disappeared into his inventory, then returned with a long band in his hand. “…is a piece of string.”
Confident as he was that this would work, he was still relieved that Gaia agreed when the moment of truth came. A bundle of 50 feathers made it into his inventory. Nahoa had picked out shorter ones near the head, merely as long as her forearm. Though the largest ones were more impressive, they would have looked silly as a headwear for a woman her size.
After the sunless day, stepping back out into the winter night was relieving. “Gaia, it is freezing!” Rave complained, shivering all over.
The rest of the naked group looked at her with pure judgement. “That was the climate of my home and even I’m not complaining,” Nahoa stated dryly.
“Ya should do less lip giving and more dick riding,” Rave retorted. “Penetration after the hunt, right?”

Due to explosive experiments and certain creation processes requiring esoteric chambers, the crafting crew typically built a structure about a hundred metres away from their sleeping place. This time around, that building was set deep into the ground, the roof rising so shallowly above the surface one could step on it without raising their knee.
A spiralling staircase around the outside of the structure delivered them to the entrance to the uppermost level. It was what allowed her to manifest armour and weapons made of ice at a will, one of the most useful drops he had gotten – at least when it came to aiding someone who was otherwise a non-combatant. “That needed to cool down.”
Lorelei pulled on a cord, before stepping away from the forge. A bell rang somewhere beneath the furnace. “If I may request the mysterious bones?”
John pulled out the severed skull of the Tzitzimineh. Gingerly, he placed it in Lorelei’s hands. The last reaction he expected from the seer was… nothing. She turned the object in her hands a few times, empty eyes scanning a distance he could not perceive.
“The fate of this individual has run its course. Its purpose in life was fulfilled. A past’s path away, I see the movement of other souls whose ancestors were touched by it. No influence lingers. It is never remembered, never revered, never feared, never known.” Lorelei put the skull on the table. “I am afraid it is a… cold trail, as they say.”
“I expected as much.” John stared at the borderline human, black skull and rubbed his chin. “I’ll let Nia have a look at it and then it’s yours to keep, Nahoa.”
“Another gift for me? You’re being quite gracious today.” Nahoa jumped onto the table and spread her legs. “Such generosity deserves service, Master.”
