The biggest mistake I see beginner artists make when doing this is to draw symbols that they have learned over the years, instead of copying what is actually in front of you.
I learned to break free by 'shifting gears' using the right side of the brain to draw literally what we are seeing. This will allow you to absorb from repetition, and create your own drawing style!
