Rose kept working but she had a little smile on her face. “What’s up with you?” Gob asked her.
“Nothing. I was just thinking that she made a great choice, in promoting you I mean.”
“What makes you say that?” Gob asked.
“Oh, don’t get me wrong. The controversy will be huge. It will be about the most unpopular thing she has ever done but it will be good for her to have someone like you close to her. Someone who knows what it is like to not have power. How are your girls finding it?”
“What girls? I’m on my own right now. Bliss prefers her cell, you can’t drag April away from her workshop for long and Tallie is being a nightmare.”
Rose grimaced at the mention of Tallie’s name. “What is up with her?”
“She has my children to look after. Not long and they will be old enough to let Bliss look after them but for right now she is stuck in my old place.”
“Children? How interesting,” said Rose, her hand going to her womb.
Gob raised an eyebrow. “Is that something you would be interested in? Having my children?”
She snatched her hand away and busied herself with her notes. “No, I have too many responsibilities.”
Gob could feel waves of desire coming off her as she fantasises about bearing children for him but he left them unregarded. “Anyway, she is desperate to move up to the new rooms. You should really try forgiving her, Leaf has.”

“No, she wants you to refer to her like that, especially among those of us who are close to her. I will try to let my distaste for that girl subside a little but it will take time.”
“Thank you. Has she been bringing you prey? I told her to take the boys hunting for you.”

“If I can think of a way to help I will.”
She turned to him and smiled. Gob stepped forward and pulled Rose to him. She tilted her head up to his and he kissed her red lips. “Thank you for giving me such an honour,” he said in her ear before letting her go.
She was charmingly flustered. Most people might not have noticed it but gob could see it in the uncertainty of her motions. “Yes, well, you better shoo,” she said, throwing his clothes at him. “If you stay any longer I am not sure I’ll get anything done and I need to have these finished for the announcement tomorrow.”
Gob grinned at her as he put his clothes on and watched her willfully ignore him. He got dressed and made his way out. He ran his hand over her delicate shoulders as he went and felt her shiver. She turned and glared at him but it lacked the ferocity that she was so capable of. As he closed the door the ghostly apparition of her spider body was beginning to spin thread while wielding scissors and needles.
He spent some time with his children educating them. He was proud of them but he really felt no paternal feelings. Leaf shrugged and then smiled at him. “They were going to start anyway as soon as I announce you as my agent and then it will be the nobility gossiping. If you think the maids are bad, they put the maids to shame.”
“Doesn’t it bother you?”
“Does it bother you?” Leaf asked.
Gob thought for a moment. “A little. I’m not fond of people telling tales.”
“But surely anything they can make up isn’t going to be far from the truth. I am sleeping with you.”
Gob looked at her quizzically. She seemed to be taking a small delight in this situation. “I just find it surprising that it doesn't bother you. Doesn't it potentially undermine your authority?”
“People have had their doubts about me since I was born. I have often heard rumours about me. The ones from the maids were pretty harmless. The ones from the nobility varied from ridiculous to deviant. At least this time there will be some truth to it.” She took a bite of the food on her plate and hummed in pleasure at the taste of it. “Out of all the things that bother me, people talking about me isn’t one of them. “Like the announcement?” Gob asked.
“That’s one but honestly it’s not that complicated. There will be a meeting of the palace council. That’s the Lord Commander of the guards, Garus, naturally, the keeper of the purse, Rose and a few of the higher nobles all of whom have ridiculous titles that you don’t need to worry about. I will introduce you as my agent and bestow the seal of office on you which will allow you to act in my name. From there it will be a lot of talking and me having to justify my decision only to end up telling them that they have to lump it because I’m the Maou, so there. It’s annoying but you have to at least let them think they have a voice.
“I plan on one thing. I want you sitting next to the Keeper of the Purse, Lady Impertinence. Don’t smirk, that’s her name. There was a trend for a while of naming your children after negative traits. It was before my time and Impertinence is older than I am and has been the purse keeper since I was a child. Demon society may be a little misogynistic but it does respect power or talent. I have power and Impertinence has talent. She is incredible with numbers. She’s a haughty and proud woman; sharp features and a very big bust. “Let me see if you can work out why you want me next to her,” said Gob. “Do you want me to seduce her?”

“That’s funny, Rose said something similar.”
“She’s a clever spider. Anyway, let’s talk about something more fun. Who are you going to have on your staff?”
“Staff? Why do I need staff?”
“Because you are now a high-ranking official. I’m afraid a big part of your job is going to be looking the part and a man of your status would have a staff.”
“I have Tallie and Bliss, would they do?” Gob asked.
Leaf frowned in thought. “Hmm, not really. Tallie is a slave so it wouldn’t be appropriate to give her a position of status. Bliss is too but it’s not known she is. The problem is that she has given in to her kinks a little too much. I don’t think she wants the status. She wants to be your lowest slave. I’m sure she would do it for you but I don’t think it’s necessary. Don’t you fancy some of the maids?”
“That’s an option?”

“What staff do I need?”
“Definitely a secretary. Once you have status, people will be contacting you all the time so you will need someone to handle that. A personal maid would be nice. Keep everything tidy and organised in your quarters. There’s all sorts of jobs you can make up.”

“You have to realise that being a maid in my palace is akin to being my concubine. It’s a high-status position. Most of the maids come from high-ranking families. They nearly all have expensive educations. I’m sure most of them could handle what you have to throw at them.”
Gob picked at his food and thought. All the maids were attractive and he was sure that any he asked for would end up on his cock at some point even if he didn’t try. Gob was amused at how happy she was and how she let it show when it was just the two of them. “Sure, why not.”
“Great. Cilla should be your secretary. She’s smart and can be fierce which will stop people from messing you around. Being half-dragon also gives her status beyond being demon kin. The dragons are only second to the true demons in terms of power and her heredity shows clearly on her. It will make people respect her more.
Flare can handle your social affairs. Let’s call her a personal assistant. Her mother was something of a celebrity: a singer and a great beauty. Flare very much looks like her mother. You know how attractive people find her. Having her with you at social occasions will be a great boon. At other times she can run errands for you.

“I know,” said Leaf, putting her hand on his. “I just needed to say it. Well, what do you think?”
“I think you have spent time thinking about this,” said Gob, giving her a knowing look.
“I just thought they were a good choice. It also means I might see them more,” she added quietly.
“I think they are perfect,” said Gob, kissing her hand. “How about we finish dinner and retire for the night?”
Leaf blushed. “I was just thinking that.”
“I know, you weren’t holding it back very well.”
“Really? I thought I was,” she said, looking genuinely curious. She shook it off. “Come on, I can summon us something afterwards,” she said, standing up and holding her hand out to Gob who threw down his napkin and followed her.
