“Greetings my subjects,” she said and Gob immediately realised what was happening. “It is I, the Demon Lord, the Maou, his magnificence or maybe that should be her magnificence now.”
Gob looked at the woman. She could have been the Maou’s sister. Seemingly tall, it was hard to tell with her sitting down, her clothes were the same as the Maou’s but cut to fit her woman's body. Her dress coat stretched around an ample bust and her white leggings were filled out in a far more appealing way, at least to his tastes. Her long, golden hair seemed to have more volume and the features of what was a supernaturally handsome face were softened with feminine features now making her supernaturally beautiful.
“I can sense your confusion so I will clarify. As some of you will know I have taken some time to tour the Demon Lands in disguise. It was a most interesting and enlightening exercise. She paused and gave a smiling yet menacing look that Gob could feel in his soul. “I understand that, to some, this might be a controversial decision. I also understand that some of you may have doubts about it so let me enlighten you.”
Gob was struck with an unpleasant headache and a feeling of pressure in his head. He pinched his nose at the unpleasant sensation. It was then he realised that he could feel Tallie changing to him, her nails clawing at his skin. Though the vision blocked out much noise, he could hear her screaming but it sounded far away. He reached out for her and tried to send some feeling of reassurance through his hand. Her screaming stopped and he felt her relax. A little while later the pain subsided.
“My apologies,” said the Maou. “I need to be sure that there is no doubt over who you are dealing with. If, for some reason you still doubt me, come and find me. I will delight in making an example of you.”
In a blink, the vision ended. Gob looked down and Tallie was sweating and holding him tight. He picked her up and carried her to the bath, gently lowering her in. “Thank you,” she said. “It was like I could feel you protecting me but before that, it was the most intense pain I have ever felt.” Gob washed her face with his wet hand and he thought about everyone else. He didn’t know where they were or what he could do to help so he focussed on helping the person in front of him.
She was calm and clean a little while later so he excused himself and headed to the kitchen. Graff was on his feet but looking battered. A couple of the maids had pulled themselves together and others were crying. “Gob, lad,” said Graff, looking nauseous. “Good to see you on your feet. Would you mind taking a walk and making sure nobody is alone and suffering? I… I still need a minute.”
Gob nodded. He loved that old man. He had never seen him looking so weak but his thoughts were on others. Gob had the strength so he would use it. He was shocked by how even a strong creature like Graff could be so affected. He went to Ma’am’s room. She was on her feet and looking emotionless but she had her spirit body out and was simultaneously making tea for everyone while ordering those who had shrugged off the pain more easily into action. Gob pulled her aside and asked if she was alright.
She gave him a weak smile and said, “Yes, better than most. I wish that had not happened but I know why it did. I am happy to have her back home.” Gob explained what Graff had said and she nodded. “Go, check the library. I had a small cleaning crew in there.”
Gob hurried off. The rows of shelves made finding anyone difficult but in the central atrium, he found Erryn and Cilla. Erryn was crawling over to Cilla who seemed unconscious. Erryn’s look of determination broke when she saw Gob and she burst into tears. “She fell,” she sobbed. Gob rushed to Cilla. There was blood and she seemed to have hit her head. She was breathing but it was shallow. “She wanted to finish the dome and wouldn’t come down,” said Erryn. “I tried to tell her.”
“Can you stand?” Gob asked.
“I can try,” she said and she made an effort to get up.
Meanwhile, Gob picked up Cilla as gently as he could. “Leaf, where are you?” he thought, his mind full of intention.
“Gob?” came Leaf’s new voice in his head. “How are you contacting me?”
“I don’t know but come to the library, now.”
“What is it?” Leaf asked.
“Just come, please,” begged Gob.
There was a small flash and the new Maou appeared before him. She looked confused and a little cross until she had time to see what he was holding. “Cilla, no,” she said as she rushed forward. “Is this my fault?” she asked. Gob just gave the slightest nod and he saw a tear forming in her eye. “Give her to me,” she said and Gob handed her the unconscious Cilla. It looked odd seeing this new woman so easily taking the weight of Cilla’s body but it served to remind him that the Maou was not the weak girl she had been only a short while ago.
Leaf let go of Cilla and light surrounded her body filled with the shape of runes and magical diagrams and it floated where she left it. Gob turned to Erryn who was still on one knee and he helped her up. He put his arm around her and she allowed him to take most of her weight as they moved towards their friend.
Cilla gave a gasp and a jolt as she came back to them. The light faded and she was lowered to her feet. “Who are you?” she asked as she saw Leaf.
“I am the Maou. You must have fallen as the vision started. I am sure the others will fill you in. I must go.”
“Wait,” said Gob. “What about others who might be hurt? You should help them.”
Leaf shot her hand towards the two maids who vanished. The light left the room and a crushing pressure enveloped Gob. It was similar to the pressure the Maou had used on that fateful night but now it seemed less crushing than before. It was not pleasant but he resisted. “I will not be told what to do.” Her voice echoed around the room.
“But people might be hurt or dead,” said Gob.
“I know,” shouted Leaf and the light came back. “Don’t you think I know that?” Her eyes were filled with tears. “Better a few random accidents than what I would have to do otherwise. Look at me. This is the price I have to pay to look like this. I’m making myself look weak. You don’t understand what the fallout of that could be. I had to send a message.” She was crying as she shouted at Gob. “You don’t know how much I had to battle with myself to allow myself this indulgence. I don’t get to do what I want or people suffer. That’s how my life is. So I've done something that I want to do for once. That means that someone has to suffer. I wish it wasn’t the case but it is. I can’t be seen to be helping people Gob. I don’t have that privilege.”
She turned away and walked a few steps holding her arms against her. “You can’t talk to me like that in front of other people, Gob.” She paused and added. “Only in private.” She looked back at him, her perfect face streaked with tears. “Thank you for saving my friend,” she said with a sad smile and vanished.
Gob took a deep breath. He didn’t know what to feel at that moment. He turned his confusion to action and set off to check more rooms. If she couldn’t do something to help, then he could.
