Try again,” she insisted. Not daring to touch her, he leaned forward and tried to kiss her like she had told him. It was only brief but it was a more tender greeting than the one he gave previously. “Mmm, better,” she said, smiling. “Sit down, I’ll make you a drink and we can catch up.”
He sat on a stool by the kitchen island Amy talked as she finished up her cooking. It was comforting to act so normally and Kenny felt some of his anxiety ebb away as he filled her in on what he had been doing at school.
“You know, if you aren’t comfortable doing kissing and things, we don’t need to do it.”
She had dropped that on him out of the blue. A minuscule part of him wanted to agree that it was probably for the best. The far larger part of him had to put a stop to such madness. “No, I’m okay with it,” he told her.
She looked at him seriously. “I don’t want to pressure you and I am smart enough to know when someone is trying to avoid me. If you’re just shy then that’s fine but I don’t want to make you do anything you don’t want to.”
“I want to,” he said a little too eagerly. Amy giggled and he smiled at his foolishness. “I mean, I am shy. That’s part of the problem. Sorry I was avoiding you.”
“That’s okay but I’d rather you just be honest. I want to help but I don’t want to upset you.”
“You aren’t, I just don’t know how to interact with you after we kissed.”
Amy giggled again. “I’d say you were doing just fine once you stopped thinking about it.” She looked up as she thought. “I suppose that is a good lesson. If you find yourself in a situation like this where you are worried about it being awkward, just relax and be as you normally would. Either their awkwardness will pass too, they will say something or they won't. Don’t try to mind-read people. They may not feel awkward in the slightest.”
“You are surprisingly wise,” said Kenny.
“What do you mean surprisingly?” Her outrage was tempered by a little smile and Kenny knew she didn’t mean it. “I was going to suggest that we do some more practice but I’m not so sure now.”
“Oh, okay, I mean, I don’t mind, if you want to,” Kenny stammered.
“Argh, you are so cute when you are flustered,” squealed Amy. She grabbed his hand and pulled him closer to her as she backed away to lean on the counter. She was pulling him into the dominant position but his passiveness made it pointless. She thought it would be good for him to get a feel for the assertive stance even if he wasn’t here yet. “Come on then. Let’s see if you can remember everything from last time.” She lifted her head towards him and closed her eyes so as not to intimidate him.
Kenny swallowed but nervously leaned forward and pressed his lips to hers. One kiss led to another and another before he pulled back, not wanting to risk seeming greedy.
“Hmm,” said Amy.
“What is it?” asked Kenny. He was convinced he had done it right.
“Nothing you did wrong. I just realised that I forgot a step. It feels odd to kiss someone so remotely. Stand a little closer.” She pulled him to her so their bodies were almost touching. “I think you should also touch me before you kiss me. It feels too weird otherwise.”
“T-touch you?” Kenny wanted to do nothing more but the reality of actually doing it was frightening.
“Yes,” tittered Amy. “I think I am quite nice to touch,” she teased. “Don’t worry,” she reassured him. “I’m not suggesting anything embarrassing like cupping my cheek. Just try putting your hand on my waist.” She lifted up one arm as an invitation for him to put his hand there. Kenny reached out yet couldn’t bring himself to make contact. “Hey, Ken-ken,” whispered Amy. “If we looked through old photos of you would we find one with your hand hovering over a pretty girl?” Kenny looked despondent. There was a picture just like it and he hated it.
Having realised she had upset him, Amy apologised and offered him another go. Somewhat spurred on by her earlier jibe, he put his hand on her narrow waist. It was much more delicate than he had anticipated. She looked after her figure and she had a narrow, taught middle and even through the fabric he could feel her body’s warmth. He summoned his courage and kissed her again. He didn’t pull back and one kiss led to another. In a fit of confidence, he put his other hand on her waist too.
Amy draped her arms over his shoulders and the action pulled him closer to her. He felt the warmth of her body pressing against his. He settled into the kiss and it felt as though Amy was warming up to it as well. He felt her lips part and her tongue brushed against his lips. Still finding his way, Kenny remembered his hands. The kissing was going well and he became aware of his touch on her body. He moved his hands a little experimentally and she seemed to shift in a positive way. He could feel her shift under his grip, the subtle shift of her muscles. He longed to touch her more. Kenny couldn’t believe his luck. “Yeah, definitely.”
Amy smiled at him and went back to her dinner prep. “Great. I think it will do you the world of good and keep kissing me like that and it will do me the world of good too,” she said, playfully. Kenny didn’t know what to say so he started heading for the door. He had something he was desperate to take care of.
Just as he got to the door he heard Amy say, “Oh, and Ken-ken?” He turned to see what she wanted. “If you had plucked up the courage to stick that hand up my top, I wouldn’t have minded. See you at dinner.” She winked at him and Kenny went upstairs with an expression of dumb shock.
