She swirled her glowing drink idly, savoring the flavor of justice served with a touch of humiliation. The laughter and whispers from the bar carried on behind her, but she paid them little mind. Her work here was done—at least, that’s what she thought.
“Excuse me,” a voice interrupted, low and hesitant.
The goddess looked up, her sharp gaze falling on a young man standing awkwardly by her table. He was tall, lean, and carried himself with an air of quiet confidence—nothing like the boastful swagger of Brad. His dark hair was tousled, and his kind green eyes met hers without a hint of malice. He wasn’t trying to impress her, and that alone piqued her interest.
“Yes?” she asked, her tone even but curious.
The man shifted slightly, rubbing the back of his neck. “Uh, hi. I’m Alex. I… I don’t know exactly what happened between you and Brad, but I could see he upset you. And, well… I wanted to apologize for him. He can be a bit of an idiot sometimes, but he’s not a bad guy, I promise.”
The goddess blinked, momentarily taken aback. “You’re apologizing for him?” she asked, tilting her head.
Alex nodded earnestly. “Yeah. He’s my friend, and I know he can rub people the wrong way. He doesn’t mean to, but… I guess that’s not an excuse. You looked bothered, and I just wanted to say I’m sorry on his behalf. And… if there’s any way you could forgive him, I’d appreciate it.”
There was no trace of guile in his words, no hidden agenda. The goddess studied him closely, her eyes narrowing as if searching for some flaw, some ulterior motive. But she found none. His sincerity was genuine, and that made her pause.
She tapped a finger against the side of her glass thoughtfully. “You care about him,” she said finally, more of a statement than a question.
Alex nodded again. “Yeah, he’s like a brother to me. I don’t know what I’d do without him.”
For the first time that evening, the goddess’s expression softened. She sighed, setting her glass down gently. “Very well,” she murmured. “Perhaps I was… overly harsh.”
Alex frowned slightly, confused. “What do you mean?”
The goddess didn’t answer. Instead, she reached into her satchel and pulled out the shimmering reality note. Opening it to a fresh page, she began to write again, her pen glowing like a comet’s tail as it danced across the paper.
---
Brad, your real name is Bianca from here on out, and you are hopelessly in love with your friend Alex. So hopeless that you have shared everything with him, including who you really are, so he knows all your secrets. But he also accepts you for what you are, and the two of you are secretly a couple. When you are out in public, Alex and "Brad" are best friends and bros to the end. And in private, you are Bianca, the doting girlfriend of Alex, the only boy you don't stammer with.
---
As the final word was written, the book shimmered with a soft, golden glow before the ripple of reality spread out once more. The goddess snapped the book shut, sliding it back into her satchel.
“What… what did you do?” Alex asked cautiously.
The goddess stood, smoothing out her dress. “I’ve lightened the burden on your friend, but the lesson remains. He—or rather, she—will learn to appreciate what she has. And perhaps she’ll be better for it in the end.” She picked up her drink, giving Alex a small, knowing smile. “Take care of her, Alex. She’ll need you.”
Before Alex could respond, the goddess turned and disappeared into the night, leaving him standing alone by her table, bewildered.

Meanwhile, Bianca—once again clad in her Brad mecha armor—felt an odd shift as she wandered back into the bar. It was subtle, like a memory at the edge of her consciousness that she couldn’t quite grasp. Something felt different, but she couldn’t put her finger on it.
Her gaze scanned the room until it landed on Alex, her best friend, who was standing near the edge of the bar. A warm, unshakable feeling bubbled up inside her, and she smiled instinctively. For a brief moment, the crowd, the noise, and her earlier humiliation faded away. All she could think about was how much she looked forward to the end of the party, when she could finally shed her armor and be herself again—with him.
“Alex!” she called, her voice deep and confident, the perfect imitation of the old Brad. She strode up to him, clapping him on the back in a gesture that felt natural yet oddly amusing given the circumstances. “What’re you doing just standing around, man?”
Alex smiled, though there was something softer in his expression now, as if he saw through the mask of the armor. “Just waiting for you, bro.”
Bianca grinned, feeling an odd but pleasant warmth in his presence. She couldn’t wait for the party to end, when it would just be the two of them. No bravado, no armor—just Bianca and Alex. Her favorite person in the world. The one who knew her secrets and loved her anyway.
And for the first time that night, she didn’t feel humiliated. She felt… lucky.
