Infodump: -Saitou Shimaru is based on Saito Hajime, the IRL leader of the Shinsengumi’s 3rd squad. Hajime (beginning) was changed to Shimaru (end). -According to Sorachi, the reason why we only meet Saitou this late in the show is because he got lost on a trip early in the series, but couldn’t ask for directions home. He only made it back now.
