Also pt.2 apparently Mantama was inspired by a shoujo romance manga Sorachi tried to create. It ended up a lot like what you just saw.

I remember watching the last episode of this arc the first time, and when the Mantama OP started playing I was like, oh a funny joke. But then it kept going so I thought someone had uploaded the wrong video or something.

For me personally, this was the hardest arc to rewatch after finishing Gintama, a lot of Gintoki's emotion and dialogue in this arc is much harder to listen to as a viewer, after learning everything about him
