Iβm leaning more towards your second theory, I think given the circumstances it makes more sense π€
I'm just guessing but Roswaal was just reading a book at 14:38 about replicating souls and how to store them in a vessel. Now that's either more to do with the sanctuary or how to apply something similar to himself. I would imagine he pulled some orochimaru style magic and put his soul in another body before he died. Hence Roswaal B.
