The Restoration of House Targaryen Chapter 10

It's been a really stressful and busy week, but I can finally get the chapter out. Thanks to those who sent their messages worrying about my situation, but it was nothing serious, just a situation that had to be taken care of. I hope you enjoy the chapter, see you in the next update.
All characters involved are over 18 years old.

Jon was in the war room gathered with the generals and Lords of the North. In addition to the leader of the Dothraki and Unsullied and the other leaders of the other armies that were in Winterfell to fight against the army of the dead. He had summoned them all after receiving the news Bran had given him less than an hour ago.
“The army of the dead has made it over the wall. The Night's King, along with his White Walkers and his entire army have officially entered our territory and are expected to be upon us much sooner than we could have thought.”
No sooner had he finished speaking than worried and fearful murmurings filled the room. Until one of the Lords interrupted the murmuring when he spoke up to ask.
“How could they get through the wall? I thought the wights and white walkers couldn't cross the magic of the wall, not even Queen Alysanne's dragon could cross it."
Staring at the map with a blank stare, Jon turned his gaze to his brother and remembering what he had told him, he replied.
“The wall is magic, there is no doubt about that. My own ancestor Brandon 'The Builder' made it with the help of giants and the magic of the children of the forest, it is true that no wight could cross it unless it was carried by a man. But apparently, the magic of the wall only goes as far as where this one ends." Stretching an arm across the large table where he had the map of the entire north, Jon pointed with his finger to a particular spot, East Sea Watch or more specifically to what lay beside it, the Bay of Seals.
“Bran has seen that the entire lake of seals has frozen over completely, allowing the Night King and his army to cross in full.”
The temperature in the room seemed to drop quickly at the news that the army of the dead was at their gates, possibly they would be arriving at Winterfell in less than a week.
“I have already arranged to send ravens to the Night's Watch and all the Houses further north. They are all to evacuate as soon as possible, send the children, women and elders towards White Harbor while all who can fight will come to Winterfell and join us for battle."
“How soon is the army of the dead expected to be upon us?” One of the lords of the Riverland asked.
“According to the way they have been moving, four or five days, six if we are lucky. But I wouldn't count on it much.” Was Jon's reply. Noting how this news had shaken his men, Jon spoke again quickly, saying forcefully and encouragingly.
“And I assure you we will be ready; we have been spending the last few months preparing for this scenario. We have turned Winterfell into an impenetrable fortress and we have assembled the largest army Westeros has ever seen to fight this threat. We always knew it would be here that the greatest and most important war of the last eight thousand years would be fought. We will hold them here; we will fight them here. For on that depends the future of everyone, not just the North or Westeros, but quite possibly the entire world.”
Fortunately, his little speech succeeded in strengthening the courage of his men. Nodding in satisfaction at this, Jon told them.
"Now, this enemy is no stranger to me, I have faced them on several occasions before and lost each time. But this time, I plan for it to be different. Since we now know their weaknesses, now we have the weapons to be able to kill them for good, now we know how they attack and we will use that to our advantage."
That's when Bran decided to interrupt him to say.
“The top priority should be the Night's King, he is not only the one who leads the wights, but it is his magic that brings them back. If he dies, his entire army will die with him.”
“If that's true, I doubt very much that he would be out in front and expose himself to being killed. If he has more than half a brain he would stay behind, hiding behind his army.”
Bran spoke again, saying.
“The Night King is clever, he has always stayed behind his army, but now he can't afford to. For thanks to Queen Daenerys, we now have three adult dragons, capable of decimating his army to ashes. That is why he will try to kill the dragons first.”
“Dragons are the most powerful creatures the world has ever seen. No man or creature can kill them, only another dragon can kill another dragon." Daenerys said, wanting to remind them of the strength her sons represented.
But Brandon all the same warned her.
“You should not underestimate the Night King, your Grace. He has been waiting for this precise moment for some reason, he is much stronger than he was in the first battle for the dawn. And furthermore, let me remind you that dragons are not completely invulnerable to men or 'weapons'. After all, the first dragon to be slain in Westeros was because of a weapon.”
“If he really is powerful enough to slay a dragon, how are we supposed to stop him?” This time it was one of the Lords of the North who asked him.
” In the same way he was defeated eight thousand years ago. In the first long night, when the eternal night was about to descend upon the whole world and all hope lay lost. One man rose out of the darkness and led mankind in its hour of greatest need. Azor ahai swung his sword made of light and ended the long night, defeated the others and their wights. He alone has the power to defeat the Night King, he alone can bring the dawn.”
Hearing these words, Daenerys instinctively moved her gaze to Jon. She had been called 'the prince who was promised' before by the red priestesses of Essos, but she had never been called Azor Ahai or heard the story Bran had told. But if the hero they needed was a warrior with a sword made of light, she could think of no one but Jon. Not only was he the strongest and most skilled warrior she had ever seen, but he knew and had fought the white walkers before anyone else, and if it weren't for him, Westeros would not have united to fight this threat. And analysing the room, it was obvious that she was not the only one who thought that way. Though it was not unanimous as one of the southern Lords asked sceptically.
“And who is this Azor Ahai supposed to be and how is he supposed to save us?”
“He will reveal himself in the hour of greatest need, when all hope seems lost. Azor ahai will be reborn and fulfil his destiny by defeating the Night King.” Bran replied, again speaking in riddles. Though throughout his speech, he kept his gaze on Jon, but that didn't seem to be something her future husband liked.
“I can't talk about prophecies or fantasy heroes, but what I can talk about is our battle strategy, and I'm glad to say we have a good one.” Jon spoke, again drawing the attention of all present, pointing to the map on the table and the figures representing each faction of his army. “Unlike our enemy, who do not have or use any kind of battle strategy or tactics, the Night King simply sends out wave after wave of his undead soldiers. Something that has worked for him in the past due to his overwhelming number of undead slaves, but this time. His greatest strength will become his weakness.” Stretching out an arm, Jon took one of the tokens and began to explain the defence plan he had developed for this battle. “The Unsullied will be our first and most important line of defence, they will be tasked with resisting the onslaught of the wights, and because we lost so many in the siege of Kings Landing, they will be reinforced by the Dornish spears.”
Jon had gone over in his mind a thousand scenarios of how this battle might play out and how best to deal with it with the resources he had. At first, he had planned for the Dothraki along with the knights of the Vale to charge against the undead, after all, men on foot didn't stand a chance against heavy cavalry, but they weren't fighting men. And the whole point of charging cavalry was to break the enemy's lines and Jon knew that wouldn't happen with the wights. So, that's when it occurred to him to base his entire strategy around the ex-slaves of Essos.
He had heard about the kind of training a man had to go through to become an Unsullied, about how they were trained and how they could fight in any circumstance, but most of all, it was remembering the story about the battle of 'The Three Thousand of Qohor'. About how three thousand Unsullied managed to defend the city against a Khalasar of fifty thousand Dothraki. If there was an army that could stop or at least stand up to the endless charges of the armies of the dead, it would be the Unsullied.
Continuing his explanation, Jon said.
“While the Wights are being held by the Unsullied, desperately trying to create a breach between our defences. The knights of the Vale and the Dothraki horsemen, will be positioned to the sides. Waiting for the perfect moment to charge them, crushing everything in their path, those brainless sons of bitches won't know what hit them. And the Night King won't have a chance to think of anything as he'll be busy with us, the Queen and I will fly over the battlefield on the dragons, burning everything in our path as we search for the frozen fucker." Raising his gaze to Dany and giving her a serious look, he added. “We'll fly high enough to avoid any kind of danger.”
His greatest concern was for Daenerys' safety and while he would prefer that she stay inside the castle safe and away from any danger. He knew he could never convince her of that. So, he had to resign himself to the second-best option, which was for her to stay on the back of her dragon. And as much as he wanted to be on the battlefield leading his army, he knew that having two dragons flying overhead and spitting fire was much better in terms of effectiveness.
Turning to address the lords for the last time, he said.
"I firmly believe that this is the most efficient way to reduce our casualties to a minimum and reduce the number of the army of the dead as many as possible. The remaining remnants of our armies will be scattered around the castle, guarding our weak points. And no matter how strong the Night King is, he will not be able to do much if his army is reduced, we will kill him before he has a chance to raise his hands. We will prevail and win the same way our ancestors did in the first long night; we will send those fuckers back to the lands of forever winter."
“The enemy will be upon us in a couple of days, rest, find comfort in a loved one and say your goodbyes. But rejoice in the thought that no matter how many of us fall, in the end, we will prevail. For we will not fight for gold, land or the selfish lust for power of a lord. We will fight for our right to live, to exist. We will fight for all that we hold dear in this world, so that our children and our children's children may live and tell the story of how men from West and East, North and South came together to fight together for the first time in history. This will be the most important battle of our lives and the one for which we will be remembered for the next thousand years.”
The Lords and the other generals, responded to his words by pounding the table or cheering effusively. Jon had full confidence in his men and in his plan, maybe things could have been better, but none of that mattered now. The enemy was getting closer with each day and this time, Jon would make sure to receive them properly, this time, he would not run away.

After saying all he had to say, Jon dismissed the Lords, who quickly emptied the room leaving only Daenerys, Bran and him. And of course, Sam who was the one moving his brother around, pushing his chair. Bran giving Sam a signal with his head to push him forward, just enough to be in front of him and said.
“Your strategy is very good, possibly the best way to deal with the army of the dead. But I'm afraid it's not going to be that easy.”
Well aware of that, Jon said to his brother.
"I know very well how chaotic a field of battle can be, but I trust my men and the orders are simple. They all know what they have to do."
“I wasn't talking about the wights.” Bran said, interrupting him before continuing. "As you said, they are beings without consciousness or thought of their own. They just follow their master's orders, which is very simple, kill any living thing. I was talking about the Night King, he is not to be underestimated under any circumstances, and he is more than aware of you two.”
That sent a shiver through both monarchs, especially Jon. But not exactly because he was worried about him, he had seen the Night King face to face, but he didn't understand how he could know about Dany. He was about to ask his brother about it, but Daenerys beat him to it.
“What do you mean by that?”
“I'm sure Jon knows what I mean, after all, you two already saw each other face to face. He even saw you kill one of his white walkers and you stopped him from being able to turn all the wildlings in Hardhome."
Jon nodded very aware of that, and asked him worriedly.
“But how could he know about Dany?”
Bran flashed a slight smile at the nickname Jon let loose before answering him.
“As I told you before, dragons are one of the biggest threats to him and his army. Believe me, he is well aware about the mother of dragons and what his dragons are capable of.”
“Do you know if he can be killed by dragon fire?”
Daenerys asked him, to which Bran replied, saying.
“I don't know, no one has ever tried it before.”
Not satisfied with the answer he gave her; Daenerys tried a different question.
“You spoke about this man you called Azor ahai, the one who in the past took it upon himself to defeat the white walkers. Do you think it's Jon?”
“Azor ahai, Hyrkoon the Hero, Yin Tar, Neferion or Eldric Shadowchaser are the different names given around the world to the hero who triumphed in the first long night. It is more like a title, not a name itself. And this man only became Azor ahai the moment he forged the legendary sword Lightbringer, he failed twice to forge this legendary sword, but on the third time knowing what he had to do, he called his wife Nissa Nissa and asked her to uncover her chest. With great regret he thrust the sword into her living heart, causing her soul to combine with the steel of the sword, ultimately creating Lightbringer.”
Surprised and a bit shocked to hear such a story, Daenerys swallowed nervously before saying with a slight shudder.
“I didn't know that.”
With a smile that tried to convey reassurance, Bran said.
“The gods seem to have a particular sense of humour, which is why history always ends up repeating itself. But that doesn't mean it has to down to the smallest detail, many things can change. But one thing is for sure, darkness is once again looming over the world, a hero is going to have to rise up to fight it, but he's not the only one who has an important role.” Moving his gaze between the two monarchs, he told them. “You two will have roles to play, during the coming winter storm and during the spring that follows.”
Apparently, that was all Bran had to say to them, for after that he indicated to Sam that it was time to leave. Moving closer to him, Daenerys wrapped one of his arms in hers and said with slight amusement.
“Does he really always have to speak in riddles?”
With an amused snort, Jon told her.
“He told me once that if he told me what was going to happen, it wouldn't happen. Whatever that means.”
“What I don't like is the idea of you thrusting your sword through me, I'm usually not-” Daenerys tried to say humorously, but Jon didn't seem amused at all by her words, as he interrupted her to say.
“Don't joke about it.”
Changing her tone to a more serious one as well, she said.
“But if that's what it takes...”
Jon didn't let her continue speaking as he took her face in his hands and told her very seriously.
“If the time really comes when I have to choose between the world and you. Then the gods made a big mistake in choosing me, because I'm always going to choose you, Dany, always."
“Jon...” she said poignantly, placing her hands on his and leaning toward him.
“I will do my duty and face whatever brings the storm, I will fight and die, if necessary, but I will not sacrifice you in exchange for victory. And if I understood anything of what Brandon said, it was that you are a dream of spring, Dany. I may be able to give courage and lead men in the dark, but only you can change this shitty world and make it a better place. Where the powerful don't keep crushing the less unfortunate, that's your fight, Dany. And my only wish is to be able to see a world ruled by you.”
“You will, and you will stand by my side, just as I will stand by your side in battle, we will survive and rule together. Promise me, Jon, I need you to promise that you will always be by my side.”
“I promise.” Jon told her, sealing his promise with a tender, loving kiss.

Jon took Daenerys towards the forges of Winterfell; he had prepared something special for her and he had already been informed that it was ready. It was there that he met Gendry, the skilled blacksmith to whom he had entrusted the task, who surprisingly no longer seemed to be in Arya's company. Of course, he had not missed his sister's relationship with the blacksmith, if he had had some free time, he would have done more research on that, but now he had more important things to attend to.
“Your Grace.” The blacksmith bowed to them both when he saw them.
Acknowledging his greeting, Jon looked around, seeing how the forge seemed to be crowded and the other smiths hadn't even stopped to greet them, much more preoccupied with their work.
“How are things here?” Jon asked him.
“Busy, the furnaces practically haven't shut down, we haven't stopped for a single minute. Especially now with the news that the dead will be arriving in a couple of days.”
Not surprised that the news had spread, Jon told him.
“That's good, we'll need to have dragon glass weapons in the hand of every man on the walls and horses. And speaking of being ready, do you have my order ready?”
Gendry nodded and wiping his hands he motioned for them to follow him. The young smith led them to a more secluded section where the surprise he had prepared for Daenerys awaited them.
"Just as you asked, I made it to be as light as it is solid, and to the measurements you gave me. But all the same I would ask the Queen to try it on so she can check that everything feels perfect.” Gendry told them as Daenerys approached to contemplate his work.
The armour was set on a female mannequin, it was made of a black metal, the three headed dragon was painted on the chest a blood red, a medium crimson cloak draped over one side and, on the mannequin’s, head rested a black tiara. Daenerys couldn't help but run her hand over the armour, contemplating the beauty and elegance of it.
“This time I'm not going to let you go into battle without proper armour.” Jon whispered in her ear, snapping her out of her trance. “And that's not the whole surprise.”
Turning to him, she watched as Gendry handed her a long, thin object that was covered in leather. Unwrapping it, Daenerys could see that it was a sword, and offering her the hilt, Daenerys was able to unsheathe the sword revealing the precious metal of what it was formed from.
“Valyrian steel.” She murmured in surprise. “How?” she asked, unable to recognize the sword.
“When my Father went to Kings Landing to serve as Hand of the King, he took the Valyrian sword of House Stark with him, Ice. After murdering him, the Lannister’s took the sword and melted it down, forming two new swords. One is in the care of a person I can trust and the other was held by Jaime Lannister, one of my soldiers was able to retrieve the sword and being Valyrian steel the sword was able to survive without being seriously damaged, it just needed a cleaning and a pommel change.”
“It's very light.” Daenerys said as she examined the pommel which was formed by the head of a black dragon with red eyes.
“One of the many advantages of Valyrian steel and being a medium sized sword, I think it's perfect for a woman.”
Shaking her head, Daenerys said.
“I can't take it; you said it was made from the steel of House Stark.”
“You will take it; it is a way of thanking you for all you have already given me. Besides, you will be my wife, you are part of House Stark now."
The next thing he knew, her lips were pressed against his. His surprise only lasted a moment before he kissed her back, pressing his lips more firmly against hers. They kissed for long seconds before they finally broke apart and Daenerys said sensuously.
“I'll be sure to thank you more properly later.”
Gendry made his throat sound, reminding them that he was still there. Smiling, Jon turned away from Daenerys before telling her.
“All the best swords have names. It seems this sword has been named before, but the bastard who did it chose a terrible name and never used it. So, technically we can say it doesn't count.”
Analysing the sword for a few seconds and knowing where it came from and its relationship to this beautiful country and the man she loved, Daenerys had the perfect name for the sword.
” Ice Heart, so that everyone knows where it came from and who gave it to me. Thank you, for letting me carry a piece of your family.”
Kissing her affectionately, Jon told her.
“You are my family, Dany. And that's a fitting name for a sword.”
Turning to Gendry, Jon said.
“You did a wonderful job. Truly remarkable.”
Gendry bowed and received the praise with humility and said.
“I am here to serve, your Grace.”
Approaching the young blacksmith, Jon put his hand on his shoulder and said.
“I think you have potential for much more than just serving, Gendry. Perhaps you can do good where your father went wrong.”
Daenerys was a little surprised at the look of fear Gendry gave her before turning his gaze back to Jon and saying.
“I would not dare ask for more than I have been given.”
Wanting to reassure the boy, Jon told him. “One of the first things Queen Daenerys told me when I met her at Dragonstone was that a son should not be judged for his father's crimes. And I think the same as she does.” Patting him on the shoulder, he dismissed him. “We can talk more in depth about that once the war is over.”
Gendry nodded and bowed to them again somewhat awkwardly before returning to his work at the forges. When the boy left, Daenerys approached him and asked.
“What was that all about?”
“Gendry is a bastard of Kings Landing, Robert Baratheon's bastard.”
“Ohh, that explains a lot, like the frightened look he gave me.”
Wrapping an arm around her waist, he told her.
“He's a good lad, and I was thinking it would be a lot easier to win over the Stormlands if we put a Baratheon as their Lord.”
Daenerys didn't know what to make of that, it was true that she hadn't dealt with the Stormlands so far, but she didn't know how to feel about legitimizing Robert Baratheon's bastard either. So, she said to Jon.
“It's not a bad idea, but I'd like us to think about it further.” Jon nodded and they left the subject there and moving to his new armour, he told him. "Although we'd also be losing an excellent smith, look how well designed this is. I've never worn armour before, would you help me put it on?”
“Of course.” Jon told him smiling.

Sansa was working on the reports and going back over the number of supplies they had for about the tenth time. Everything was in chaos these past few days, especially since the news that the White Walkers had made it over the wall and were marching toward Winterfell. She knew she would be of no use in the battle to come, but at least she could use her time and knowledge where she could truly be useful. For, if they somehow managed to survive, she would be in charge of making sure everything was perfectly organized and rationed so that they could survive the remainder of the winter.
Although her work was interrupted when she heard someone knocking on her door and seconds later one of her guards came in to tell her.
“My Lady, your Grace, Queen Daenerys Targaryen wishes to see you.”
Sansa was not so surprised to hear that, she knew that sooner or later she would have a conversation alone with the Dragon Queen. So, putting aside the quill and her documents, she indicated to the guard.
“Let her in.”
Nodding at her command, he opened the door wider and stepped aside, letting Daenerys Targaryen in. Closing the door behind him, he left the two women alone. With a tense smile on her face, Daenerys began to walk toward her, Sansa did not rise to meet her and bow to greet her, as was proper when one received a monarch. But Daenerys did not seem to want to make the situation more tense, and decided not to emphasize that. So, she simply decided to take a seat, resting her hands on her thighs and be the one to greet her first.
“My lady.”
This time, Sansa returned the courtesy. Bowing her head slightly and saying. “Your Grace.” Before asking her. “What can I do for you?”
“I wished to see you, as I believe since my arrival in Winterfell. We have not had the opportunity to have a proper conversation alone.”
“Well, it seems we finally have the chance.” Sansa said, forcing a smile. “And what is it you wish to talk about.”
“Nothing in particular, it's just that I feel we haven't gotten to know each other very well. After all, we are soon to become sisters-in-law and...”
Daenerys was interrupted by the redhead when she asked her in a pushy tone.
“So, it's official then? You and Jon are getting married?”
Pursing her lips a little and trying to remain calm, Daenerys answered her politely.
“Yes, we are.”
“I see, I'm sure you'll make a handsome couple. That was all you wished to tell me, your Grace?”
“No that wasn't all, I really appreciate your words. But I can't help but feel that since arriving in Winterfell, I have received nothing but mistrust and unkindness from you, or am I mistaken?" Daenerys told her, raising her tone slightly.
“I am sorry, your Grace, but unlike my brothers. I do not trust so easily in just anyone." Sansa answered her, biting off every word.
“Your brother didn't trust me at first, but at least he gave me the chance. The same can be said for your sister. And besides, I am not just anyone, Lady Sansa. I am the Queen who brought two armies and three dragons to defend your home, I think I at least deserve a chance to earn your trust, don't you? Or do you really still think I'm the enemy?”
This time, it took Sansa a few seconds to answer her, and when she did, her tone was much calmer.
“No, I don't believe you are the enemy and I am well aware of all you have done for my people and my brother.”
“Then why are you so suspicious of me?”
Daenerys asked her to which this time, Sansa remained silent because she had no answer or rather, she didn't want to say it. At this, Daenerys said to her.
“You know, I thought that among all of Jon's siblings, you and I would be the ones who would understand each other best. After all, our stories are very similar.” At Sansa's questioning look, Daenerys explained. “Jon told me everything you went through, from how you were held prisoner by the Lannister’s, to how you were abused by them, to how you were forced to marry your enemy, to how you were taken against your will by a horrible man-”
Sansa stopped abruptly at that, preventing her from continuing. Her beautiful face distorted into a furious grimace, her pale cheeks had turned as red as her hair from embarrassment, but before she could say or do anything to aggravate the situation, Daenerys beat her to it and said.
“I know you may think it wasn't his place to tell me all those things, but your brother only shared them with me when I gained his complete trust and he didn't just talk about you. He talked about your whole family, those who are still here and those who are gone. And I am grateful to him for telling me all this, especially your story. After all, I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who has suffered the worst horrors that can be done to a woman and have been able to survive it and even more, triumph over her enemies.”
Sansa seemed to calm down a bit and slowly took her seat again, allowing Daenerys to continue.
“I too was forced into a marriage I did not wish, but the man who forced me to marry a savage Dothraki Khal, was none other than my own brother. The person who was supposed to protect me and take care of me, I still remember the time he told me he would let the Khal along with his entire army and his horses rape me, if it meant he would get his army. I really think you are a very lucky person, Sansa. You had a wonderful family and wonderful brothers, both of whom went to war to save you. I might even go so far as to say that I envy you for that. You have no idea what I would have given for Jon to have been by my side in Essos. I'm sure he would have protected me from Viserys, he would have protected me from the Khal, he would have been a true brother to me and most likely, a lover too. But things didn't work out that way, I was alone with Viserys and he was here, with you.”
“I-I didn't know all that.” Sansa said embarrassedly.
“Of course not, you never gave me the chance to let me tell you.” Daenerys told her, really trying to form a bond with the eldest of the Stark sisters, even though this one wasn't making it easy for her. “There's a lot more I'd like to tell you and talk about, if you're really okay with that. I don't want there to be bad blood between us, you are the sister of the man who will be my husband."
Letting out a heavy sigh, Sansa picked up the decanter of wine beside her and also taking two glasses, poured them both some before setting the decanter aside again and handing the other glass to Daenerys. The redhead quickly drained the cup before saying.
“You know for a long time I thought Jon was all I had left. My father was beheaded in front of me, my sister lost with everyone leaving her for dead. My two little brothers killed by someone who was supposed to be family, my mother and older brother killed at 'the red wedding'. Jon was my only hope and motivation to keep living, I dreamed of reuniting with him and when I finally did, it was the happiest day of my life. We had both survived, together we would retake our home and together we would take revenge on our enemies. He was made King and he made me the Lady of Winterfell, when I was with Jon I no longer felt alone, I felt safe, everything seemed perfect. Until he left me in favour of meeting you and when he finally returned, he didn't seem to be able to part with you.” Refilling her glass again and this time, emptying her glass halfway, Sansa confessed to her with a slight blush on her cheeks. “I was jealous of you.”
Hearing that, Daenerys smiled amusedly, but not in a mocking way, but rather a friendlier one before telling the redhead.
“Possibly I would feel the same way, if I were in your place.
