[Present Time — Outskirts of Hogwarts]
{Tom Marvolo Riddle “Voldemort”}
“M-My lord, is it wise to attack now? To attack without gathering our entire army?”
It was a question that plagued my mind as well. Worry, though never shown, did seep inside me.
We had barely a fraction of what we once had, with men still scattered throughout the lands, yet we came here — to face the core of the Phoenix.
“Dumbledore a-and his forces s-still reside in Hogwarts, Sire.”
“Tell me,” I asked the same question that had been asked of me. “Who do you think wins when two opposing groups have the same number of people, the same level of skill, and the same level of intelligence?”
I wasn't foolish. I knew better than to downplay Dumbledore just because he had grown old.
“I-I do not know, Sire.”
I too had wondered the same back then. But the answer came as a surprise, yet it made a lot of sense — almost as if I should have known it even before I was told.
"When you take time to prepare, you give others the time to prepare too." He was wise for his age. "And if we waited too long to gather our entire forces and bring new people to us, Dumbledore would have strengthened his army within that period as well."
They went silent, knowing it was the truth.
“S-So we attack them when they are least prepared for it?”
“In a battle of equal forces, the ones that win are those who initiate the battle when the opposition least expects it. A battle started without prior notice, enemies taken by surprise — that’s how you win a battle of equals.”
We were not equals, never equals. But Dumbledore alone was above us and could shift the flow of battle to his favor.
So, we had to strike now.
Strike when he was least prepared for it.
And we would win.
As he said, ‘Victory befalls those who are prepared for it.’
For those who aren’t, they taste defeat.
And the sweet taste of victory, the first triumph of our attack, came unexpectedly.
“My lord!” The voice of the whisperer came sharp, “Dumbledore has been killed.”
Even though we expected his army to fall, we thought he would remain — yet he managed to surprise us.
“He was killed not by Dolohov, but by the son of Lucius Malfoy — Draco Malfoy.”
Dumbledore surprised us by not falling against my stronger Death Eaters, but by falling to a child.
“Of course,” as he said, “He fell to the one he was least prepared for.”
Yet I still had to understand how… how he knew it all before it happened.
Worrisome enough to keep in mind, yet of the least concern to act on now.
Because for now, we had a school to conquer.
“We attack now!” The order was heard loud, “We move now!”
And thus we started the war.
The war they weren't prepared for.
…
…
[Moments Earlier — Dumbledore’s Office, Hogwarts]
{Severus Snape}
How…
How were they here?
“I apologize for the uninvited visit, but worry not,” said Dolohov, a man stronger than most Death Eaters. “You will not be alive to remember this.”
How? How did he even enter without the password?
“Young man,” Dumbledore’s wand was pointed at Dolohov, and mine faced the others who surrounded us. “I will not ask how you got inside, but I suggest you leave before this place gets dirty. I want no children or staff involved in this.”
Gone was the professor’s caring voice and gaze. The man next to me, pointing his wand at Dolohov, was the one who took down Grindelwald and instilled such fear in Voldemort that he refused to fight the Order of the Phoenix directly.
“Do not worry, we are not here for the children.” Dolohov smiled, and I knew exactly what he was planning. “We are after you—”
“Professor, move!”
“Crucio!”
Dolohov always attacked when you weren't prepared. He was the sneakiest and peskiest of the Death Eaters.
However, Professor Dumbledore had lived far longer than anyone in the room. He had seen far too many like Dolohov.
“Protego!”
It was not Protego Maxima, but a simple Protego that deflected Dolohov’s Crucio. No matter his age, it was still Dumbledore — the man who faced two Dark Lords and lived.
“Expelliarmus!”
I barely prevented a man from launching a spell at the professor’s back.
Seeing that I had finally begun to move, the men started throwing spells from all directions.
“Protego Maxima!”
They weren't the strongest, and a strong Protego Maxima stopped the attacks, but continuous and quicker attacks would be much harder to handle.
“Professor, I apologize, but your office might be ruined after this.”
The man, however, gave only a smile. “The children’s lives are more precious. Worry not, Severus, and do what you need.”
His wand glowed blue as he conjured a spell to face Dolohov.
“Thundorus Limitus.”
One of the professor’s personal spells, and one ridiculously destructive.
“Incendio Maxima!”
Even as Dolohov tried to counter the lightning spell with his fire, the lightning was much stronger and conducted through the fire to reach and burn his arm.
“Ugh!”
Dolohov was strong, but the professor was a seasoned warrior.
“Expelliarmus!” I was not as skilled, but certainly not willing to lose against these measly Death Eaters. “Bombarda Maxima!”
The office was certainly ruined, but that single spell also took down multiple of the pesky wand wielders that surrounded us.
“Fiendfy—”
My eyes immediately focused on the man trying to summon a demonic flame. If he succeeded, the entire office and everyone in it would burn, with no room to escape.
However, the spell was never completed.
“Aquarius Drowus.”
The professor had mastered countless battle spells, and this water charm was one of them — capable of releasing a strong stream of water that pushed back the opponent and entered the open pores, causing the opponent to choke and scream in pain.
Dolohov groaned and cried in pain, the water penetrating his ears and nose.
I could see the proud and strong Dolohov not even coming close to making the professor sweat. Instead he suffered every time he tried to attack Dumbledore.
And the old professor was not one to drag a fight, so he prepared his spell.
“Stupefy.”
“Protego!”
However, what we failed to notice was another man hiding, waiting for us to show our backs.
“Crucio!”
Augustus Rookwood, another of Voldemort’s stronger Death Eaters.
“Protego.”
But my worry was for naught, as the professor deflected the Crucio like he had deflected every other spell that came his way.
“Severus,” the professor finally decided to speak. “Get rid of those around us; we might have to face these two together.”
“As you wish, sir.”
It sounded like a difficult task to stop all the enemies around us in such little time — and it was.
However, I did have a spell I did not wish to use. It consumed a lot of energy, took a toll on the caster’s body, and caused a lot of damage.
But there was no other choice.
And so, I decided to use it.
“Protego Diabolica!”
A spell so powerful, a fire so hot that the moment it formed—the screams of the countless men around us grew horrifyingly loud and terrifying.
The spell burned everyone around, melting their flesh and killing them on the spot.
The bluish-black flames spread across the room, burning the tables and the shelves. Despite this, it did not cause a single burn to me or the professor.
The spell only harmed the foes while keeping the allies safe.
“Good work, Severus,” the professor smiled, and I refused to show him that the spell had weakened me considerably. “Now we deal with these two.”
The professor’s magic grew stronger, much more potent and bright.
“Darn this old man…” Dolohov gritted his teeth. It was his first time facing Dumbledore, and he was paying the price for underestimating the old professor.
“Kill him!” Augustus roared as he prepared his strongest spell so far.
The darkest spell.
“Avada Kedav—”
Never!
“Protego Diabolica!”
The spell drained all my energy and made me fall to my knees, but it stopped his incantation on the spot as it landed directly on his arm and spread across it.
“Ahhhh!!” He roared as the fire burned him, melted his flesh, and consumed his arm.
“Sectumsempra!”
Horrified by the sight, Dolohov cast a spell on his fellow Death Eater, immediately chopping off Augustus’ arm with his severing curse, preventing the fire from reaching his upper body.
But this allowed the professor to lock a spell directly onto them.
“You would have lived longer if you had walked the correct path. But alas, goodbye, gentlemen.”
And that's when I saw the professor casting a spell so strong, so powerful that it sent shivers down my spine.
“Devilous Judgementus!”
Pure black flames, with a magic I could not even feel, spread across the room, consuming anything and everything in their path.
“N-No!”
People included.
“Nooooo!”
The flames, unlike Protego Diabolica, did not merely melt the enemy.
No, it did something scarier.
“Ahhhhhhhhh—”
It vaporized them.
It gave them not a second to retaliate. It gave them not a sliver of hope.
And in a fraction of a breath’s time, it vaporized them, erasing their entire existence.
“Damn you!”
Two idiotic Death Eaters, without name or strength, tried to attack, but this time—I did my job fully.
“Stupefy!”
And the two fell to the ground, cold.
Every other person in the room had melted or vaporized, leaving a horrendous stench. The last two Death Eaters lay on the ground, senseless and pale.
Giving us our victory and leaving me with nearly no strength to walk further.
“You did well, Severus,” the professor praised, his calm and caring smile on his face. “Unfortunately, we have no time for rest. We have to protect the children; we have to make a move.”
“I… Yes, you are correct, sir.”
There was no time to waste.
“Then let us go, my fri—”
“Avada Kedavra!”
However, we had failed to notice the presence of a certain someone around us.
A certain boy that none of us would have ever suspected.
“No!” My eyes went blurry as I saw the scene, “NOOO! PROFESSOR!”
The curse of death, a forbidden spell, and a spell that we could never allow.
That spell struck his unprepared back, turning his pupils wide and body cold.
“NOOO!”
“I-I did it!”
All while a boy laughed hysterically near the door, his hands quaking in nervousness and excitement.
“I-I killed Dumbledore!”
The boy that none of us suspected, but should have from the start.
The student of Darius Safar, Draco Malfoy.
And the boy who killed the greatest wizard of our time.
“The strongest wand is mine! The Elder Wand is mine!”
…
…
[Present Time — Grounds of Hogwarts]
“Leave, Harry.”
“Hah? Who said he can leave?”
The psychopathic worm, the annoying smirking man yelled from his broom.
“You both die here.”
He sounded like a deranged man. I knew who he was; I had learned about this guy from Bellatrix and the others.
Annoying, but strong.
Bartemius Crouch Junior.
“P-Professor?”
Harry was afraid, rightfully so. Any boy would be if he saw a crazed man yelling and laughing while standing on a flying broom.
“You should leave, Harry.”
“He will stay!”
I paid no attention to the man.
“Run back inside. It's dangerous out here.”
“I said he will STAY!”
“Crucio!”
Harry's eyes went wide as he saw the man casting the spell, but I only gave the boy a smile.
“Run,” I said, extending my arm towards the incoming spell. “I promise I will not let him hurt you in any way.”
“H-How?”
I paid no attention to the psychopath. Even when deflecting the Crucio with my bare hands, I only focused on Harry.
“Go to your friends; they need you.”
“But Professor, what a-about you?” He was scared, nervous. But even then, he cared about me.
Truly the hero of this world.
But his worry was wasted on me.
“I will be fine,” I gave the boy the brightest smile. “I promise you.”
He stood there, clenching his fists, worried and unsure. But he was smart.
“I-I will save others!” He said, and with a worried face, he started running towards the building.
“You will go NOWHERE!”
“Avada Ka—”
“Why are you here?” I asked, throwing an orb of fire at him before he could fully chant his spell.
This caused the man to trip and fall directly onto the ground, most certainly breaking his bones.
“Ugh!”
He might have been a difficult foe if someone else fought him, but he was just annoying to me.
“I knew he would attack when least expected.” I was the one to put that idea in his head after all. Villains often lose because they announce their plans. “But I did not expect him to attack this early. And definitely did not expect him to attack his subordinates.”
Harry had long since escaped the place, and it was just me and this man.
“Funny how his followers think they would gain riches, power, and fame if they follow him.” It truly made me laugh. “When he goes after the ones that helped him, freed him, and brought him back to power. What makes you all think he won’t sacrifice you when the time is right?”
I wasn't stupid. I knew Voldemort would target me too. I was too threatening for his cause, and he knew nothing about me—neither my strengths nor my weaknesses.
But that also meant he would sacrifice his men for his reasons.
He was loyal only to himself.
And that's how a Dark Lord should be, just not the best leader for a man with expectations to follow.
Unless you simply want to see the world burn, you should not be there for his cause.
“But what would you know?” I asked the groaning man. “It doesn't even matter, to be fair.”
It didn't.
Instead, it was good.
It was chaotic, quicker, and much more widespread than I expected—but not unwelcome.
“Anyhow, you have served your cause.” I pointed my finger at the man’s head. He still writhed around in pain, almost comically. “Your Lord Voldemort, the noseless, would say the same.”
And with that, I decided to end his pain.
He might have survived if he hadn't come after me.
Well, he came after Harry, but it didn't matter. I was there.
And he wasn't meant to be the one to face Harry.
“Goodbye.”
With a single spell, even without a chant—I made his world go dark..
His head severed even before he could process the pain.
And that left me with an amused smile.
“So it has finally started, huh?”
The end of this world.
