I think that's an accurate summation of this story's approach--usually I don't like to "zoom out" from the direct first-hand experience of one person, since in general, the more that a story zooms out and the more points of view from which it's told, the more tension is lost... but I got to wondering about the one-off possibilities of packing a lot of history and events into a very tight story length and figured it might be a fun departure from the norm. One day I may attempt to complete the very long, very twisty version of this tale as I originally outlined it....

It’s so wonderful to sit here and look at all the wonderful comments drawing parallels from the great horror masters, knowing full well Soren is one of them. I know I already commented on this one, I did a 3rd listen, but I wanted to say again how much I enjoyed this story! It’s a dang hit!

I felt the true horror was in the fact that all this horrible stuff, all this gravitas, was completely and casually disregarded at the end. Someone had a chance to stop the fact that this horror now besets a children’s hospital and it’s going to get so much worse. And then….some office worker just goes “meh, whatever!” The ending was personally what hit me so hard. Everything was there to stop a series of horrifying tragedies. But nothing was done.

I like the mood of this one, but I noticed some differences from other knifepoint stories. Usually there is a lot of detail about the effects of some supernatural force, and the characters’ experience of them, but an unresolved mystery about the force itself. In this one, it seems the focus is on an explanation behind a lot of strange occurrences, but not much detail on the occurrences themselves. It makes it a little harder to get that feeling of “yeah, I felt something like that once”. Maybe it just feels that way because so much of the story takes place in the past. I’m going to listen several more times to see if I missed something.

Just listened to ‘crannies’ again and I think I picked up the reference! Or rather, it “showed itself” to me…

I was just thinking 'Man, I hope Soren gets another KPH up sometime soon, he's been on a roll lately'. And then I get the notification. Had to wait until I had time to listen, but well worth it. I like the structure, very H.P. Lovecraft, as is the unfolding nature of the evil at work. While I know these only the occasional and loosest connection between most of the KPH tales, hearing about the Vigeroth (?) here makes me wonder about a sort of Dictionnaire Infernal of the demonic entities that have cropped up over the years and many stories.
