Some Alone Time, Part 18
🕑 Added 2021-12-31 19:27:57 +0000 UTCBy the time the big German shepherd was rinsing himself off in the shower, his dirty diaper hidden in a couple of plastic trash bags by the counter, he had mostly convinced himself that everything was going to be alright. It would be a tough sell, but he loved her, she loved him, and all he had to do was talk his way through it.
“Just read about 'em in a magazine ad at the doctor's office last week...” He recited to himself, lathering his fur and washing through it, making sure every inch of his body was nice and clean after such a babyish indulgence.
“Studies say they're good for stress relief.” He fluffed himself through with a towel, arching his back and wincing at the way it cracked. From his neck to his shoulders, down his chest and back, he dried himself off and smiled into his hazy reflection in the mirror. Without a full diaper clinging to his hips, not to mention his thumb in his mouth, he was pleased to see how grown up he looked. Almost like his work ID.
“I just lost track of time babe, that's all. Nothing weird at all.”
Absolutely nothing.
Feeling every bit like the cat that got the early bird who got the worm, the daddy dog gingerly picked up the bag containing his diaper, briefly embarrassed by the weight of it, and stole out of the bathroom to head for the front door; in just his gym shorts and an undershirt, just a normal dad running some last minute trash out to the roadside, so he doesn't get yelled at in the morning.
Simple.
With the cans already at the road to be picked up in the morning, and a burned out streetlight providing tactical cover, it was a surgical strike. Walking on his toes, he dropped the bag into the trash can and pulled the lid down tight before dusting his hands off and making his way back into the house.
“Glad that's done with, at least.”
Now for the fun part.
He was already working on his plaintive expression by the time he was back in the house, engaging the front door locks. There was a brief moment of hesitation before he started down the hall, footsteps soft. He could see the bedroom light was on, and the door was partially open; she was in there, no doubt waiting on an explanation, and he didn't feel so sure of himself anymore.
He paused again, partially down the hall, and ran over the specifics of his plan for the fifty-second time. Stress relief, doctor's office, magazine ad, try diapers on off-days. Easy. It made perfect sense. His body felt like it was a mile away from his mind as he made his way to the door, breath catching briefly in his chest before he forced it to normalize.
“H-Hey, babe? Are you still awake? Can we t-”
As he spoke, purposely sounding hesitant, he nudged the door open and peeked around it to get a better look around the room. That was about as far as he got before his canned explanation fell completely out of his brain.
