Her fingers brushed over the petals, soft as whispers, careful not to harm them. The sun hung low on the horizon, its fading light painting the sky in hues of orange and lavender. Her gaze flickered with both love and sorrow, the weight of eternity etched into her expression. Each step brought her closer to a small, weathered cottage nestled at the edge of the field.
On the porch sat an ancient dragoness, her form weathered and frail with age. Her cobalt blue scales, though dulled by time, still caught the soft light of the evening, glimmering faintly like a memory of their former brilliance. Her ruby-red eyes, vivid and intense, gazed into the distance, as if they saw far beyond this world. Yet there was a quiet peace in her expression, and a faint, knowing smile lingered on her lips. She was waiting. She had been waiting for her.
Serass hesitated at the base of the porch steps, her heart aching in ways words could not express. For a moment, she simply stood there, her hands trembling at her sides. This goodbye—like so many others before it—felt unbearable. But finally, she ascended the creaking wooden steps and knelt before Sayuri. She reached out, gently taking the dragoness’s hand in her own. It was light and delicate, fragile as the petals of the flowers that surrounded them. Yet to Serass, it felt unshakable—steady and eternal. She pressed Sayuri’s hand against her face, tears spilling silently as she closed her eyes. Then, she leaned forward and kissed it softly, pouring her love into that simple gesture.
"The time has come, my love," Sayuri said quietly, her voice warm but faint, a mere echo of the strength it once held.
"I know," Serass whispered, her voice trembling as the tears continued to fall.
"Don’t cry," Sayuri murmured with a gentle smile. "I want you to be as radiant as you were when I first saw you step out of that grove… so many millennia ago."
Serass shook her head, her shoulders trembling as she fought back a sob. She clutched Sayuri’s hand tighter, as if holding her could delay the inevitable.
"Sayuri…" she choked, "this is not the end. I won’t let it be. I won’t let you go."
Sayuri’s gaze softened, full of calm and infinite love. Slowly, she raised her other hand, trembling with effort, and touched Serass’s cheek. Her fingers were cool against the warmth of Serass’s tears.
"I know," she whispered. "I know you will always find me. You always do. And I will always wait for you."
Serass leaned closer, her voice breaking as she made her desperate, unyielding promise.
"I will cross oceans of time, tear through the fabric of existence, and defy every force in this world or the next just to find you again. To hold you, to kiss you, to love you. My love for you is eternal, infinite, unbreakable."
Sayuri’s smile brightened faintly, even as the light in her eyes began to fade. Gathering the last of her strength, she leaned forward until their foreheads touched, their breaths mingling as the world around them seemed to fall silent.
"And wherever I go," she murmured, her voice barely audible now, "in any form, in any time, my soul will always seek yours. Always. Remember that."
Serass felt it—the fragile flicker of Sayuri’s life fading, the warmth she had known for so long slipping away. Her heart splintered into countless pieces, but she held her beloved close, unwilling to let go. She kissed her one final time, pouring every ounce of her love into that kiss, as though it could bind them together across eternity.
And then, as softly as the dusk settles into night, the flame of Sayuri’s life went out. The silence that followed was profound, a hollow stillness that seemed to engulf the world. Yet in the midst of that emptiness, Serass saw something emerge. A radiant sphere of blue flames, glowing like a star, hovered above Sayuri’s still form. Serass knelt there for a long time, her tears falling freely as she cradled Sayuri’s lifeless body. Her hands trembled as she reached toward the sphere of blue flames, brushing her fingertips against its warmth. The soul pulsed softly in response, a tender farewell, before it began to rise. Serass watched as it drifted higher, its light growing fainter as it disappeared into the heavens.
"Go, my love," she whispered, her voice breaking as she stared into the empty sky. "I will find you again. I swear it."
The wildflowers in the field swayed gently in the breeze, as though mourning the passing of a love so rare and infinite. Above them, the first stars began to appear, glinting in the darkening sky like silent witnesses to a promise as old as time itself.
