The centerpiece was what looked like an MRI machine. The device itself, a large, cylindrical machine that looked both futuristic and intimidating.
“Alright, let’s go over a few things before we start,” Angela said, her voice calm and reassuring. She explained the procedure, her explanation well practiced from many procedures. “You’ll lie down on the sliding table, and I’ll position you so that your legs are inside the scanner. It’ll make a series of noises during the scan, which can be quite loud, but I’ll give you some earplugs to help. You need to hold still for about 30 minutes. If you feel uncomfortable at any time, just squeeze this red button, and I’ll come right in.”
Emma nodded, her stomach churning slightly at the thought of being encased in that machine. Despite Angela’s soothing presence, anxiety prickled at her thoughts. What if it hurts.
“Do you have any questions?” Angela prompted. Emma paused for a moment before asking, “Is it really loud in there?”
“It can be,” Angela said with an understanding nod. “But the sounds are just the machine doing its job. It can be a little strange at first, but it’s completely normal.”
With that, Angela directed Emma to lie down on the table. Taking another deep breath, Emma reclined, feeling the firmness of the surface beneath her. She was grateful for the coolness of the air conditioning, which contrasted the warmth of her skin. Angela placed a pillow under her head for comfort and placed a warm blanket over Emma. “You’ll need to take off your clothing before we can begin” Angela said. She carefully folded the clothing Emma handed her as she positioned Emma within the machine.
“Okay, you’re all set. Just relax, and I’ll be right here monitoring you,” Angela said, placing the earplugs gently in Emma's ears. As Angela stepped out of the room, Emma’s heart raced; suddenly, the space felt much smaller.
The sliding motion of the table brought her legs closer to the mouth of the machine. With each inch she moved inside, the walls seemed to close in. She fought the urge to panic, focusing instead on her breathing—slow and steady. But the whirring and clicking began almost immediately, a symphony of mechanical sounds mixed with her own heartbeat.
A mechanical voice called out “Hold you breath”.
