That's an interesting question. I think going back to Aunty Donna's Rumpus Room, it's sort of this loose frame that helps keep the sketches going. I doubt it was Netflix's doing.

My analysis of the show is that you’ve sort of tricked people into watching sketch by framing it as narrative. When I was watching it I realised (especially with the pirate booty episode) that the only relevant story beats are in the cold open and the final 2 minutes or so. There are a couple of references to the plot throughout but it’s mostly just unrelated sketches. It almost feels as though Netflix were pushing for a narrative element. Was this the case? And if so how difficult was it to reach a compromise that didn’t distort your original vision too much. Loved the show by the way, and I’m certainly hoping for a second series.

Was there any concern on the Netflix side with how Mark's pizza man (and his fictional mum) character came across? Any cultural clashes?

yeah, we worked really hard to make sure the sound i made was an extreme version of dweeby, and nothing crook. also, the kidney thing is actually true of me - i dont keep it in a jar, but am missing a part of my kidney. that way its coming from a place of truth and not dodgy because its my lived experience.

uuuuummmmmm..... in terms of writing, reworking ellen for screen was tough. it was a long journey to something so simple and so similar. in terms of shooting, it was all pretty easy tbh. the biggest challenge was the long shoot days and being on set all day every day.
