One shot: Dragon Quest Masked Thug
🕑 Added 2021-06-18 04:24:36 +0000 UTCNow who remembers this guy?
For those into videogames, I was watching the E3 streams last weekend, and I was struck but how angry and negative the internet's responses to almost everything was. It made me sad, both for the people who work hard to put all that stuff together, and also the simple fact that videogames are something to be enjoyed. If they become a huge source of anger and frustration, are you really engaging with them in the right way?
Anyway, just some thoughts I had. Which made me think of Dragon Quest, a series that doesn't get the attention it deserves. It's pure comfort food, and a nice change of pace to all the internet rage. This is the masked thug, a hunky NPC who appears in many different forms and incarnations in most games in the series. And the blob next to him is an adoring Slime, the series mascot.
Just something relaxed and peaceful, which was what I needed to draw this week! Also with a night version, because DQ always has a cute day/night cycle.

This is SO AWESOME! DQ is one of my all time favorite series. I always thought the masked thug was sooo hot! I need a poster of this!

Honestly I love the look of the whole series, from the Slimes and Drackies all the way to the studs! It's just so charming and memorable. I put a good 80 or so hours back into DQ8, although I never quite beat the post-game trials. That area up in the sky with the sequence of battles - too tough for young me!

Good choice! Play it when you have a whole evening with nothing else to do - it's a slow burn so just let yourself slowly sink into it.

Damn I wish more artists did Dragon Quest content. I wanna see Hendrik get fucked by a moosifer or something, lol.

I've always wanted to get into Dragon Quest, and your art just convinced me to preorder the 11th one! On the E3 note, it's very sad to admit, but videogame players are some of the angriest fans out there. Obviously there are also amazing communities too, but in general terms no-one rages quite like a videogamer online. Well, except maybe Star Wars fans!

Dragon Quest 8 is probably one of my favorite games of any genre of all time. I've sunk 100+ hours into that game on multiple occasions. I always found the thug monsters amusing because of their design. Like, here's slimes and drackies and whatnot...then all of a sudden there's muscle studs coming after you. And I love this design. Great way to re-imagine the character.

Love the DQ series and never thought I'd be seeing this guy as a sexy stud. Excellent job! As for E3, internet is gonna internet. I personally seen TONS of games that got me hyped for the future of gaming. I just brought a ps5 and seeing the Microsoft future lineup, I plan on buying a Series X next!

I am excited to see more about Starfield!

He looks amazing, man! Such a good fit for your style. Now, we need a game starring him and his band of thonged brothers... 😄 I'm a bit relieved they didn't announce a Dragon Quest Builders 3. I was extremely addicted to the second game when it came out and ended up playing it nearly nonstop sometimes on my Switch. 😳

I'd meet that masked thug in a dark alley ;-)
