I work as a landscaper, very heavy labour intensive work. I was digging a trench whilst listening to this episode. As per Peter's instructions I did google Josh Hawley and did laugh out loud imagining handing that man a shovel 😂

It is funny to me that when discussing how societies ritually construct manhood, the first example of a becoming-a-man ceremony they pulled was the bar mitzvah... when bat mitzvahs also exist and are almost identical to the male version, especially in non-orthodox communities. Like, I get why, but it's still funny to me that bar mitzvahs--essentially just a Hebrew school graduation--are the jumping off point for discussing like, adult circumcision and hunting an antelope.

Is Josh Hawley not just the living embodiment of Jonah from Veep?

I think the connection between scarcity and definitions of manliness is interesting. In Ian M. Banks' Culture series, the civilization has nearly endless abundance. His take is, logically, that they abandon gender rules entirely, and characters are often transitioning between men and women and back again. That is inline with the section about gender roles in abundant societies that you discuss.

is today’s bonus ep only available to folks who subscribed through apple podcasts for some reason? I see it in the regular show feed (but can’t access it) but it isn’t here or in my bonus ep RSS in the podcast app.

Is anyone else’s Patreon feed not updating to see the two new episodes? I have tried and failed to troubleshoot this and don’t know where to ask for help.

Of course marriage is going down in the US. Throughout history, marriage was essentially a merger and acquisition, with the wife and her assets as a product portion of the transaction. Nowadays, women work full-time, manage the household, and still do more of the childcare. A good vibrator and a pet can do wonders for being single.

He’s lowkey right about porn guys…

Peter to "the Village Homosexual" is what Michael was to straight women's disappointing sex-lives in the Maintenance Phase Weight Watchers episode.

With the amount of time Michael posts on Bluesky and how much he talks about Grindr I’d be surprised if he ever leaves the house

The thing that stands out most to me is the “abundance” thing. Because, technically, couldn’t we be living in a time of abundance? But there is a bunch of people that need us in scarcity? Or maybe that’s the point. Idk.
