In the Yu family's banquet hall.
Su Zhengcai held his wine glass, his old face smiling like a chrysanthemum, as he politely said: "Director Yu, if it weren't for your leaders speaking up for us in the Management Council this time, our Su family definitely wouldn't have made it through this crisis. So, I must drink this glass to thank you for saving our lives!"
"Old Su, you..."
"Director Yu, I must drink it dry," Su Zhengcai raised his glass without allowing any objection and downed two and a half measures of white liquor in one go.
Yu Jinrong looked at him with a smile.
Su Zhengcai immediately poured a second glass and continued: "Regardless of the reason, we indeed caused a lot of trouble for the Management Council, with the strike and workers being injured. This certainly had a bad influence and made your leaders worry. This second glass is for me to apologize with thorns on my back."
With that, Su Zhengcai drank it again.
Yu Jinrong looked at him, still not moving, neither drinking nor speaking.
Su Zhengcai's most impressive trait was that he liked to punish himself when drinking, and liked to visit prostitutes for free. Two glasses down, he had already drunk half a jin, but as the glass hit the table, he still showed no intention of stopping. He directly poured a third glass: "Director Yu, you saved our old Su family's life, so we must show our stance. From now on, our Su family's eight hundred workers will definitely go wherever you point. If the higher-ups want us to collect bottles, we absolutely won't collect plastic bags down below."
"Hahaha," Yu Jinrong laughed heartily at his words and finally raised his glass in response: "Then I must drink this glass with you. Old Su, I've just come to the Management Council, and I still need the support of companies like yours below to do the work. Let's take care of each other in the future."
"We rely on your care," Su Zhengcai replied.
At this point, Su Tianyu and the others all stood up, including the two leaders Yu Jinrong had called, who also filled their glasses.
"Come, come, Old Su, bottoms up!"
"Bottoms up!"
"...!"
The first two glasses were actually just a prelude, because Yu Jinrong hadn't given the Su family any help in the early stages of the incident, let alone saving their lives. Su Zhengcai toasting him was purely to find a reason to keep the conversation going. But the third glass was crucial, and it was the purpose of the Su family's visit today - to officially "cling to the rich" and grab hold of a big leg from the upper echelons of the Management Council, using the previous incident as a pretext.
Yu Jinrong didn't promise anything, but he drank the wine, and that was enough.
Su Zhengcai started by drinking seven and a half measures of white liquor, which definitely showed an attitude of going all out. After everyone sat down, the Su family members also showed humble attitudes, acting like lapdogs as they toasted everyone in turn. So after one round, everyone's heads were dizzy, and the banquet atmosphere became much more casual.
"Old Su, I heard about the Fuman Tower incident. Your Su family's youngsters are quite fierce," the leader to Yu Jinrong's left said with a smile. "Not only did they cut off Lu Feng's ear earlier, but they also managed to take away 600,000 yuan in compensation at Fuman Tower later. That's really tough. The younger generation is formidable, haha!"
Hearing this, Su Zhengcai immediately perked up: "Oh my, our family has many sons. These kids have been together since they were little, sleeping in the same room, living on the same kang bed, just like real brothers, very united. There's no choice, in this era, if the children of us common people don't help each other, how can we live a good life? But nowadays, being fierce or not doesn't matter much, you need to use your brain when doing things, you need to be educated. Look at me, I was a soldier for over ten years, fighting with Old Shen, Old Zhou, and those people since before the Chinese district was unified. But now, aren't I still just a common person? It's of no use."
"Hehe," Yu Jinrong looked at Su Zhengcai with a smile, not responding.
"I heard you've also connected with Wang Daolin?" the leader on the left asked again.
Su Zhengcai paused for a moment, then immediately replied: "Wang and I were already comrades-in-arms. During the great migration to South Shanghai, we slept in the same barracks and carried guns together. But for this case of mine, he couldn't do much at first. It wasn't until my nephew came back and united the four companies that he helped work on this matter."
As he spoke, Su Zhengcai patted Su Tianyu's shoulder and commented with a smile: "This nephew of mine is really something. The four companies being able to unite and bear this matter together was all his suggestion."
Hearing this, everyone looked at Su Tianyu with somewhat surprised gazes.
"Your nephew also works in your family business?" Yu Jinrong asked.
"No, he was studying before, at the Army Staff College," Su Zhengcai patted Tianyu's head indulgently. "He just graduated and came back."
"He just came back and already understands the family situation?" the leader on the left looked at Su Tianyu with surprise. "Young man, you're not simple."
"No, no, I had heard about some of the family situations while I was in school," Su Tianyu replied modestly. "I just gave some random suggestions. In the end, it was all decided by my Big Brother Tiannan."
Yu Jinrong looked Su Tianyu up and down: "You're from the Chinese Army Staff College?"
"Yes," Su Tianyu nodded. "The one in Zone One."
"Then your education level is not low, but I see your age...?" Yu Jinrong was somewhat puzzled.
"My father was also a military officer before, so I joined the army at 17 right after graduating from high school. I trained in a basic-level unit for a year, and when I was old enough, I took the exam for the Army Staff College," Su Tianyu replied vaguely.
"Oh, I see," Yu Jinrong nodded slowly, then asked softly: "Then why didn't you stay in the army after graduating? The Staff College has quite good promotion prospects. With your education level, your development prospects should be quite good."
"Something happened in the family, and I didn't have much room for promotion in the army anymore, so I thought about coming back to take the civil service exam," Su Tianyu replied with a smile.
"Oh my, this child's life has been hard. Just as he got into military school, both his parents died, and he had no one to take care of him in Zone One. Moreover... those connections from when I was in the army, those who should have retired have all retired. We don't have money to arrange a good position for him anymore, so we thought about having him come back to take the civil service exam, to be near me so I can look after him a bit," Su Zhengcai took over, making Su Tianyu sound quite pitiful. "This child is quite ambitious, he was outstanding in school. Oh, right, Director Yu, you have extensive connections and know many people. Could you help work something out for my Tianyu later, to get him assigned to a good unit after he passes the civil service exam?"
Director Yu looked at Su Zhengcai with a smile, paused for a moment, and then replied: "This year's recruitment is already over. The next exam will be next year."
"There's no rush, he can stay at home for a year and take the exam then!" Su Zhengcai had said so much, but his real intention was to help Su Tianyu make a connection. Because for someone like Director Yu, if he was willing to say a word, it would be more than enough for Su Tianyu.
Director Yu turned his head to look at Su Tianyu, pondered for a while, and then suddenly said: "The young man looks quite spirited, and seems capable too. Why don't you come work at my company for a year first? When the exam opens next year, I'll have my son help you find some connections and work things out."
With these words, everyone in the room was stunned, including Su Tianyu, who looked at Yu Jinrong with great surprise. He was completely unprepared for this invitation.
Su Zhengcai was the first to react, patting Tianyu's head and saying: "Are you stupid? Quickly thank your Uncle Yu!"
