(If he ate all the locals, no one would be left to bring him gold and all the other clever things two legs leave him at his shrine.) Especially ones that panic, those are easy to gulp before they get their wits about them! For some reason there's a lot of shock at the idea of being eaten alive...

This makes me happy, what a perfectly efficient, pleasant, dignified and appropriate end for those lucky adventurers. Their place in the fire demon's diet is so highly treasured, of course I count myself among those who would take their place in and instant if we were offered. I appreciate so much tasty little in-setting descriptions like yours, and the visage of Mortimer himself is of course crisp and briskily exquisite, oh how I'd love for him to look at me with those eyes.
