“You haven’t even said I look good”.
“Huh?” Jake mumbled. His girlfriend’s voice had gotten lost in the loud music, but when he turned toward her, he could tell that she was furious. “You look great” he said, forcing a smile. “Real great”.
“You’re an ass, Jake. You know that?” She spat, giving him a cold look. “What’s gotten into you tonight?”
“Nothing, babe” he replied, doing his best to forget about the tornado of confusion that had been spiralling through his mind all day. He leaned forward to kiss her, but Megan pulled away.
Neither of them spoke for a moment. The entire hall was packed with students, but for Jake, only two other people existed. He looked from Megan, across the room, and his eyes found his again. Austin returned the playful stare, just like he’d been doing all night, and a smile spread across his handsome face.
“Are you fucking serious?” Megan snapped, finally realising where her boyfriend’s attention had been all night. Before Jake could reply, Sarah and Austin approached, and the four of them stood around awkwardly.
“I’m so fucking done with this” Megan said, and evidently, Sarah had been feeling the same.
“All fucking night!” Sarah said, bitterly. “It’s like you’re dating each other!”
With those words, the two young women stormed off into the crowd, and just as Jake made to follow, Austin’s hand closed around his arm.
“How about we have a real party?” The handsome young man smirked, and lifted up his shirt to reveal a flask of alcohol.
Jake’s head spun. He loved Megan. In fact, she was the first girlfriend he’d ever had who he felt so strongly about, yet, the man in front of him made him feel other things. Different things.
“You know” he replied, scratching the back of his neck, “I think that’s exactly what I need right now”.
Excitedly, Austin pulled Jake along behind him until they escaped the crowd and found themselves in a much quieter part of the building. Their ears rang as they took the stairs down to the basement, and edged inside a disused restroom.
It was dated, dirty and old, but Jake didn’t care. He pictured Megan and Sarah talking shit about them, and wondered if the two of them might come to a mutual decision to break up with him and Austin. He looked over at his best friend whose shirt was now pulled out from his pants, with his tie draped around his neck.
“Here” Austin said, wiping his mouth and grimacing at the taste as he handed Jake the flask.
“Aren’t you worried?” Jake asked, gulping and wincing.
“Worried? Worried about what?”
He stared at his friend. Did Austin not realise how angry his girlfriend was about the entire situation? Before Jake had a chance to ask, he was shoved back against the wall, and Austin’s strong hand pushed between his legs.
“Dude, I’m not in the mood” Jake sighed, pressing his hands against Austin’s firm chest. “Austin, I’m serious, man”.
“Oh, stop being such a pussy” Austin grinned, squeezing Jake’s plump package through his suit pants. “I know you’ve been waiting for this all day”.
Jake couldn’t deny it. Ever since he woken up to his friend’s hand gliding down his abs, all he could think about was how much further they could take it. For a moment, his cock began to stiffen, but then reality hit again, and he shoved Austin away.
“You know they fucking hate us right now?” He barked, and Austin cocked a brow.
“Who?” He said, and that was enough to really piss Jake off.
“Who?” He snapped, “our fucking girlfriends, bro, fuck!”
It almost looked like Austin didn’t care. He shrugged his broad shoulders, and once again, attempted to grope his best friend, but Jake was becoming furious.
“Give me that” he spat, and pulled the flask from Austin’s hand again. He unscrewed the cap and took two large mouthfuls from it, before gasping. Whatever alcohol he was drinking, was working. His head was already beginning to spin, and when Austin began edging his hand inside Jake’s pants, the young man decided to let him.
“I knew you wanted it” Austin whispered, resting his forehead against Jake’s as he toyed with the young man’s cock and balls through the fabric of his underwear.
Jake didn’t answer him. At this point, he wasn’t even sure he wanted it, but Austin continued, and after another few gulps, Jake returned the favour.
It felt almost as good as it had in bed earlier that day, but the niggling worry about Megan continued to chip away at him until he felt Austin’s fingers creep inside his underwear and stroke his hard cock.
“Alright, that’s enough” he said, as though he’d been electrocuted.
“What do you mean?” Austin grinned, still holding Jake’s rod in his bare hand.
“I said that’s enough!” The teen snapped, and shoved Austin backwards.
“Jesus, man. What the fuck!” Austin shouted, almost slipping as Jake buttoned up his pants. “What’s your fuckin’ problem?”
“You’re my problem!” Jake growled, “I’m not gay!”.
Austin stood up straight and glared at him. He looked confused, but the confusion slowly turned to amusement.
“Oh, now you’re not gay” he scoffed, “you know, that wasn’t as obvious when you were squeezing my ass all morning”.
“It was a joke” Jake lied, but Austin scoffed again.
“It didn’t feel like a joke” he replied, and once more, reached for Jake’s crotch. This time, however, Jake slammed by him and stormed toward the door.
“What the fuck has gotten into you?” Austin spat.
“In case you haven’t noticed” Jake snarled, spinning back around, “our girlfriends are losing their minds because we’ve been gawping at each other all night, but maybe you don’t fucking care about that”.
“Maybe I don’t” Austin shrugged, following Jake across the room. “Why would I care about her, when I can have you?”
The answer stunned the young man. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Had Austin been with Sarah all this time, just to get close to him? It was an absurd idea, but he didn’t look even remotely bothered by what had gone on.
“I… I told you” Jake mumbled, unsure how to answer, “I’m not uh… I’m not gay”.
“Fine” Austin whispered, and leaned forward slowly, until their faces were inches apart. “No homo, remember?”
For a split second, Jake allowed himself to experience the feeling of being kissed by his best friend, until something inside him snapped, and he squirmed out from under Austin.
“Get off me you fucking… Faggot!”
The word hung in the air as the two of them stared at each other. Jake wanted to reach out and drag it back inside, but the damage had been done. He watched as his best friend’s face became sour, and part of him expected a punch.
“Wow” Austin half smiled. “Nice”.
“I didn’t mean–”
“Save it” he said, tucking his shirt back inside his pants.
“Dude, I didn’t–”
“I said save it” he said again, and Jake knew by his tone that he wasn’t messing around. He squeezed his eyes shut as Austin walked back toward the door, before turning to him once more.
“Maybe it’s a good thing you’re not gay” he said, and his voice cracked slightly, “I didn’t realise how much of a fucking asshole you really were”.
“Austin wait!” Jake called, but the young man was already gone, and Jake let out a sigh before slamming his fist into one of the old stall doors. “Fuck!”
The next morning, Jake woke in his own bed. He lay with his eyes closed, and found himself wishing that he could reverse the clock to yesterday morning, and feel Austin’s warm hand on his abs. When he opened them, the room was dull, cold and empty.
He hadn’t meant for things to end the way they did. Hell, he wanted nothing more than to be with Austin, but it was impossible. How would he ever explain to Megan that he was in love with his best friend?
Jake sat up and grabbed his phone. They’d had arguments in the past, but they never lasted long. Part of him expected a text from Austin, laughing about how stupid they’d been last night, but instead of that, Jake found eight missed calls from Megan, and a handful of angry messages.
“Fuck” he sighed, and turned back over in his bed, hoping that when he woke up again, everything would be back to normal. Unfortunately for him, when he woke again, nothing had changed. In fact, as the days went by, the only thing that changed was Megan’s anger, and by Monday morning, Jake was single.
Sure, he was upset, but he couldn’t shake his feelings for Austin. He missed hearing his voice. He missed seeing his face. He missed feeling his touch, and he was almost excited at the idea of profusely apologising to him in school, until he arrived to school, and couldn’t find his best friend anywhere.
He felt horrible for what he’d said, and as the miserable day continued, he decided that the only way to sort things out, was to speak to Austin directly. By the time the bell sounded, the weather had changed to mimic exactly how he was feeling. Rain poured down on him as he hurried over to his car and made the short journey to Austin’s house.
He knew that Austin’s parents didn’t get home until late, and he also knew that they often left a spare key under the flower pot outside, and luckily for him, that’s exactly where he found it.
He knew that Austin would ignore him if he text, so he pushed the door open and called out his name.
“Come on, man” he said, looking around the downstairs of the house. “You know I didn’t mean it, just talk to me, please”.
Nothing.
“Austin, dude. Come on!”
Nothing.
He reached the bottom of the stairs and took one more look around before sighing and continuing. When he reached Austin’s bedroom door, he knocked twice.
“I know you’re in there” he said, “I can hear you breathing”.
Austin remained silent again, and Jake rolled his eyes and pushed open the door before stopping dead.
Austin sat in his bed with a blank look on his face. His eyes were red, and it was obvious that he’d been crying. He sniffled, wiped his nose and glared at Jake, who suddenly had no idea what to say.
“What are you doing in my house?” He asked coldly, which took Jake aback.
“I uh… I just wanted to see if you’re okay” he replied.
“I’m fine” he growled, “you can go now”.
“Don’t be like that, man”.
“Like what?” Austin snapped, “upset because the person who’s supposed to be my best friend thinks I’m a faggot?!”
“I don’t think you’re a… You’re that”.
“Oh, so now you don’t want to say it?” Austin scoffed, swinging his legs from his bed and getting to his feet. “You were happy to say it the other night, though, right?”
“Austin, I was… I was just confused, alright?”
“Well there’s nothing to be confused about anymore” he replied, smiling tearfully, “you’ve made it pretty clear that you know exactly what you are and exactly what I am”.
They faced off for a moment before Jake felt a spark of anger.
“Don’t put all of this shit on me!” He snapped back, “we had girlfriends, man. It wasn’t right to just… Well, to do whatever it was that we were doing!”.
“Had?” Austin replied.
“Megan broke up with me” he said, though he didn’t quite care about that anymore.
“I’m sorry” Austin mumbled, sighing, “that sucks”.
“And Sarah?” Jake asked.
“I broke up with her”.
“I guess we’re both single now, then”.
“I guess so”.
Neither of them spoke for a moment, until Jake looked up at his handsome best friend.
“You even look good when you look like shit” he smirked, and it took a second for Austin’s angry eyes to soften.
“Do you want to be single, Jake?” He asked, stepping closer once again, until his warm scent welcomed Jake in.
“No” he whispered back, “do you?”
Austin kissed him. This time, the spark inside Jake wasn’t a spark of anger, but a spark of passion. He felt himself falling back onto Austin’s bed, and smiled to himself as the kiss continued.
He liked Austin’s bed far more than his own one. That was for sure.
