Thank you so much for the comment and kind words! This was SUCH a fun journey and I really enjoyed it - more than I expected!! The 12,000 year time jump was INSANITY and I was not prepared for it! I love the somber choice of the black and white and it helped bring “home” the final message, no pun intended! Noriko and her relationship with Amano and Jung were so well-done in this! I just love the themes, the character development, and how they were portrayed throughout this! “Sincerity” is such a great word to talk about with Noriko and her journey in this series! I can see how other mecha series might be “better” but I love that I got to see such an influential work that set the stage for so many other series - seeing one of the “classics” is such a great feeling! And the fact that this work from the 80’s gave us a strong and developed female lead? LOVE. And yes, I think that while there still is exploitation in anime today, the important thing is to not just “accept” it and to hold it accountable - can it still be a great series, YES, but you also need to make it take responsibility for nonsense. So thank you for understanding with me! I was REALLY happy that the Wheel of Fate chose this series - I didn’t know how it would go because some comments gave me reservations, but I was so pleasantly surprised by this series! Thank you for helping to moderate and for all the support and comments!

Loved the reaction and discussion! This has been a really fun mecha journey and I’m so happy to hear you had a good time with this show! 🥰 “15 years later?!” “12,000 years later?!?” 🤣 Time is a cruel mistress to the very end in this show. Really love the choice of going from the full colour spectrum of all the previous episodes to this black and white episode, makes it all that much more beautifully sombre. And the ‘welcome back’ lighting up at the end is such a wonderful moment. 🥰 I really love how well the relationship between Noriko, Amano and Jung is developed throughout the series – such a great presentation of peer mentorship, rivalry and developing respect for just 6 short episodes. And Noriko especially is well developed, and her journey and emotional growth are treated with sincerity. While for me personally GunBuster doesn’t rank very highly in terms of mecha, it is an important work for the genre and has been quite influential I feel, ambitious and technically innovative. It was one of the earlier mecha works which allowed female protagonists to show true development related to what was actually happening in the plot. But – those characters still were not allowed to have that development without having to pay objectifying and exploitative ‘rent’. Thank you for consistently calling the show out and not letting it off the hook. This has been an excellent discussion series! 🥰 Many things to dissect, hype, hilarity, character work – I wasn’t sure how it would land when it won, so am very pleased you’ve enjoyed it! 💙

The version I saw changed from black and white to color after the two escape pods launched themselves toward Earth. This reminded me of the excitement I felt in the 1939 “The Wizard of Oz," when the film went to color as soon as it entered the world of Oz. (Probably, with this version, you didn't have any doubts about their life or death.)
